Mayflower 'Extra Hot' is absolutely my go to (medium version not as good). Goldfish has been going for years and is a close second for me. A lot of restaurants use Goldfish so its the one to compare to. Both are excellent curry sauces and are like a tradditional chinese curry takeway.

The value proposition of the powders and the paste is even better than stated because the Bisto one is already a sauce. The others get made into sauces so make significantly more volume when mixed with water. Must admit, I’m partial to the Mayflower, but my go-to curry sauce is the Bachelors fruity curry mix with pieces of apple. It’s quite speedy but gets used in a lot of chippies, certainly one or two near me use it. Lathered over chips it’s hard to beat, in my opinion of course!

McDonnells brand aside, I'm loving the fact that there is hardly any sugar content in these sauces. As a type1 diabetic, this is music to my ears, because unless I'm mistaken, years ago Mayflower's curry sauce used to be loaded with sugar therefore I tended to stay away from it. But I'll be stocking up now. The Bisto one's are far too expensive and before you even tasted it I knew it wouldn't be up to much. Great review as always mate 👍

Really great video Gareth and wonderfully bright too! I’ve had the Mayflower extra hot curry sauce also and it is really good. Tesco have a little section dedicated to Irish food which I discovered passing by. They have amongst other things, Cadbury’s Gold Crisp chocolate, Cadbury’s Mint Crisp chocolate, Tiffin, a kind of round fruit bread/cake which is delicious, Kimberley biscuits and other things. When I was small (in the 60’s) my gran (from Donegal) used to send parcels to us near Christmas full of goodies. The one thing I am missing is Galtee cheese though. Keep up your excellent work pal. All the best to you and yours.

I tried that Goldfish sauce after watching your prawn curry video and was very happy with it. The wife loves Chinese curry sauce and was also delighted with it. I will try the Mayflower one when we can find it and make sure not to buy the Bisto one! Thanks for another great video. If you really like spicey food, buy the extra hot chilli powder, brand doesn't really matter, you can use it sparingly until you find your limit. Just be careful not to go overboard the first time!

I’m in Canada, here I (and most people I know) use Japanese curry blocks. I’ve never seen a Chinese curry here. The Chinese take away food is actually very different to what’s available in the UK. There are 2 main Japanese curry brands - ‘S&B’ and ‘Glico Curry’. I prefer S&B myself, but even though I buy hot & spicy, I still find both brands extremely mild. I managed to buy some McDonnell’s from a British store recently, so looking forward to trying it. We are going to the UK in May, and Mayflower will be on my list to try.

The McDonnells is a firm favourite in Ireland. I love it and the mayflower ones but for different things. The mayflower I find is best for chinese/Asian stirfry type dishes (tip I always add in a teasp of Chinese 5 spice powder to strir fries I usually marinade the meat or chicken in it with oil, 🌶🧄 and ginger). The McDonnells I find is more suited to "chip shop' type stuff eg curry chips or as a dip for onion rings etc its yummy 😋.

I worked in a couple of Chippies in the distant past, they tended to use either Dinaclass or Middleton Foods Curry sauces (come with or without sultanas). However, I don't know if you can buy smaller tubs than the catering sized 2.5- 10Kg tubs, that we used to get. I believe that Goldfish paste is also often used in Chinese Takeaways for that "Chinese" style curry sauce.

Good review as always. I find Mayflower hard to beat, though it lumps easily, so I usually mash the dry powder with a fork before adding it to water. Goldfish is an honourable runner up in my book, the first tub I bought tasted a bit 'ordinary' for want of a better word, until I added a 1/3 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the mix near the end of stirring, which gave it a bit of kick.

Yes the mayflower sauce is really good. They do a milder one than the one you showed but they're both brilliant. I part cook a load of veg then put them in a big pan, add peppers, courgettes, onions, peas, mushrooms and then simmer in the mayflower sauce for an hour. I then turn it off and let it stand until cool. The longer it stands the better. I eat it as it is as I'm a vegan but I add meat for the missus. We then freeze any that's left. Not many supermarkets sell this sauce now but you can usually find it in Farm Foods, B and M and some smaller shops. Great vid mate.

Superb as far as my wife and I are concerned. I'm not bother about the lack of heat and she doesn't like anything spicy hot anyway. If you're careful you will get 8 portions out of it and good sized one too, but I'm a pig when it come to Chinese curries so we only got 6 out of ours. mayflower is my favourite great value for money. When I get Chinese takeaway instead of shelling out £1.60 to £2.50 for curry sauce I just make my own with Mayflower . Another great video Gareth.

I've just been to Tesco, Asda & Morrisons & none of them have heard of McDonnells even though when I go online it says they sell it. I managed to find Goldfish curry paste in Asda. I live in Wallsend near Newcastle so if anyone on here has seen it around my area, please let me know. Thanks

I love the Mayflower in Extra Hot & medium varieties, the Goldfish is very nice too. I recently tried the Bisto curry sauce in granule form with chips, battered veggie sausage from Aldi and tinned mushy peas and was fairly impressed. I've never seen the McDonnell's one.

Great review again. I have tried the Goldfish brand and it it is very good but needs but of salt pepper and sugar adding to boost it. Also there is a bit too much star anise flavour that lingers on taste buds for too long. Now i will try Mayflower brand and not bother with the other 2

Hey Gareth. Nice of you to have taste tested Mc Donnells curry sce. You should seriously try it with your Chicken or Beef Curries. But it's mighty over Chips. I'm in Hospitality Management and I'm always amazed when UK tourists try our Curry and they says it's great tasting Curry. Our Curry Sauce is Mc Donnells. And I'm sure most other big hotels in Ireland use it....but glad to see it tickled your taste buds. Again well done.

Mayflower is good. I Stocked up the other day when I was in Home bargains. Goldfish is good too but I have to order it off the internet as you cannot get it where I live. They all use MSG or flavour enhancer E621. Apparently it has less sodium in it than regular salt.
