So the softer ones are softer for a reason if you look on the back of the packet and it says not suitable for home freezing. Means they have been made months in advance then blast frozen. And pulled out the freezer about a week before they hit the supermarkets. That’s what makes them slightly softer freezing them. I know this because for the last month I’ve been picking them up from the various cold stores up and down the country

Mince Pies are honestly all much the same. I bought several boxes of Aldi at around £1.25 for a box of six, only to find the date doesn't last until Christmas. As you say, they were dry, soft pastry, and sweet, but they're as good as your "fancy" pies! They should call luxury food products, "Imagine The Difference!" and "Extra Expensive!" 🤣 I prefer to "eat modestly," and hang on to my "brass!" (I'm turning into my late father!) You SHOULD do a blind taste test, because your perception is swayed by brand, packaging, and price!

I pack biscuits ,Shortbread and oatcakes for a company called Walkers. They're one of the biggest companys in Scotland. They also make mince pies for a lot of the supermarkets. I think a lot of these may have been made by them. I have worked in the mince pie factory and it was interesting to see the machine that puts the top on the mince pies thumping it on. I had the job of looking to see that the top of the pie was on correctly and if not sliding it into place before it went to get baked.

I feel the need to remind all that mince pies originally contained... Real mince beef! A lot, by volume. And suet and all sorts of things. Incredible memories of my parents preparing the mincemeat in... September? Mrs. Beeton or Elisabeth Davies cookbook IIRC... I was very young back then, very late 70s I think, all manner of sultanas, currants, raisins, candied fruit, various sugars and... Brandy! Lots of it! Put in glass jars, turned regularly and topped up with more brandy reularly for 2 months. In December the resulting pies were beyond belief, unbelievably good!

I know you don’t have a Lidl, but I’ve found that Lidl and Aldi usually sell the same items, equally priced, just under a different name. A good review though. Maybe there was no winner on taste, but you did show there was a winner on price. 👍🏻. Perhaps you could do a similar multi test on Xmas puddings ? That’s usually where the difference in taste and ingredients stands out. Keep up the good work mate.
