I love playing with Asterion, but I could never see myself playing AS Asterion because it would cost me most of his voice acting

There are certain lines and cutscenes about Astarion that you don’t see if you never play as Astarion. Like for instance, you see his nightmare about Cazador that you otherwise only know about from a single line of dialogue. There’s also voiced lines in that cutscene too, that you wouldn’t hear otherwise.

That and the fact that all his random banter is lost. I could somewhat do without him being fully voiced, but come on, why the funny banter too?

A friend of mine had a similar conundrum with the Red Prince in Divinity 2. I had to talk him out of playing him because then he wouldn't get the interactions.

I really like this esp considering Astarion's past, getting to set free the trapped fae had to feel nice and that child like wonder at seeing a pixie is just too adorable.

Pretty sure he disapproves of it if Tav frees the pixie, though. He also disapproves of you condemning the duergar for practicing slavery which kind of shocked me tbh. You'd think he'd be more sympathetic towards people in similar situations to what he's been through, but nope.

​@idontlikeusernames345 His biggest thing is he loves torturing people and hates being the "hero" because the idea of a knight in shining armor coming to save the weak is a fallacy... or so he believes because no hero ever came to save him in his time of need. He loves his own freedom/autonomy. He just doesn't care about anyone but himself 😅 I was also confused but as the story progresses it becomes clear that his values are very... *particular*

​@@lavenderteadreamsafter his personal quest, if you take the light side option, he will start to approve some interesting things you'd think he wouldn't. Saving the Gondians, for example (which is, a lot of gnomes lol).

@@skolas-aditya This! Especially in Act 3 you may notice him approving of you helping people or even talk about helping people. It took me a while to notice because I kept choosing the more selfish answers whenever the consequences weren't too bad, but he does ease up after certain points in the game ^^

God i really wanna play origin Astarion but I feel bad about him not having Tav/Redeemed Dark Urge in his life. All footage I've seen so far is really neat, though, Astarion of all people being a protagonist sounds unique.

anytime astarion might disapprove of a very much needed action or dialogue, just switch your control to him and make him be the one to do it cause he cant disapprove you for his actions lol.

Also By now I know how much approval and disapproval I can take. but it kind of doesn't make sense for him to disapprove when you do it, but be that excited when you yourself release it.

@@Heroann I rationalize it as him having a contrarian personality; he disapproves of a lot of actions unless he’s the one making the decision lol. Also he resents other origins’ “heroic” behaviors because he’s resentful that no one came to save him from Cazador, but it’s a little different when the decision is up to him. I had trouble making sense of my Astarion play through until I started seeing it this way. (Of course you could also do an evil play through with him and it would be in character as well, but with this in mind most choices available to the player fit him in some way)

@@Heroann he approves of the pixie being freed, just not when you still need the moonlantern. After a certain point in the questline you can release the pixie and he doesn't care. He's not against releasing her from enslavement, he's against risking your lives in the darkness without a backup plan. Often approves of you helping people if it costs you nothing or very little or it gains you something, he disapproves if it puts you in danger without any obvious benefit

BTW You can get this cute little dialogue with him during a normal Tav or Durge run if you just have him grab the lantern from Kar'niss's corpse. Found this out today when I had him grab it just because he was closest.

It's crazy I know but, when you see him relaxed (which you often only see if you have him as the controlled character during conversations and cutscenes because they put his face on a generic model, which happens to be not scowling constantly) he's actually very pretty. 90% of the time he's scowling or otherwise expressing either anger, discomfort, sadness, or some form of masking. It's one of the things that makes the graveyard scene so special, he's unmasked for most of it and his expressions are much like these.

Her blessing is the most efficient way to deal with the shadow curse on a mechanical level. No need to use a slot for a moon lantern

​@@NyxNeverwinter Depends on how far you are with his story, and how much approval you have, and what choices you use in his dialogues. As Astarion starts healing from his trauma and being more comfortable around the team he starts approving of the purely "good" choices. In the beginning he usually likes choices that are either beneficial for him/the party or violence for violence ones, he usually dislikes any choice that require too much effort while not being beneficial for his/the party's gain or anything that gives other false hope(like saying "we'll save A" makes him disapprove, saying "we'll do what we can" doesn't). You can also push it the other way and make him approve of the more evil choices later down the line.

Weird that if you release her as any other character, Astarion disapproves. Same for buying the enslaved artist. Doesn't seem to be consistent with his character to disapprove of freeing slaves.

It kind of does. He is bitter that nobody saved him when he was a slave and he has a distaste for the 'weak' because they remind him of himself. His attitude changes a bit in act 3.
