I really like how you're talking about "class fantasy" in these BG3 videos. Most guides just talk about what the classes do mechanically and overlook how they fit into the wider world of the game, which is a big deal in an roleplaying-heavy game like this one.

I love that you pointed out the nuance of the class fantasy beyond "brute". I've always kind of imagined them as the "charisma caster" of melee classes. Instinct and emotion over training doesn't have to mean that you're a hulking dumb-dumb.

I ran an Eladrin wild magic barbarian/battlemaster fighter in a tabletop campaign recently, and I flavored his rage as merely an innate channeling of fey magic. He was of average intelligence, could hold a normal conversation, and didn't fly off the handle really ever.

Barbarians are awesome tanks and do some pretty epic damage, even at low levels! They are pretty fun to play in D&D. I like some of the homebrew stuff Larian has done too! Another thing they mention is that Barbarians can throw other members of the party - or enemies - so they can throw halflings, gnomes, goblins etc... which could make for some really fun hijinks! Especially if you are playing multiplayer, you can be proficient at throwing your friends into your enemies haha! There really are no bad classes!
@Bzk--
@Bzk-- Жыл бұрын
Actually (at least in early access) the "throw" ability isnt class specific at all. Anyone can attempt to throw both objects and creatures, your capability at doing so depending on your strength. For example in an encounter i used lei'zel (fighter) to throw my halfling barbarian up on a cliff.

At least in early access the barbarian had some of the most amusing class specific dialog options to also make up for the fact that they're not built to be a very good face character. You can kinda just roar at people and intimidate them into backing down often with situational advantage.
@CrazyxEnigma

Thank you for pointing out Barbarians have nuance! They're Sorcerers to the Fighter being a Wizard when it comes to how they typically gain their martial prowess. I'm curious about the Wild Magic subclass I typically avoid things that have that type of rng but I may make an exception depending on how its implemented.

After playing EA for a bit, one thing i really appreciate is that the devs managed to make even full martial classes A LOT more interesting and engaging than in many other titles (for example the pathfinder games) where often they can quite literally just use basic attacks all the time, thanks to all the extra stuff you have access to besides class specific features (combat maneuvers, weapon abilities etc)

Sadly the PF games went too by the book. The game becomes overwhelming. Without a mod to auto cast buffs or things like that, it's super boring. I started the game and kinda left it because of that. One of the things that I like about BG3's design is that the environment really encourages you to interact with it. While this isn't a practical thing to do on tabletop, shoving people off of high places, leaping great distances and tossing furniture or PEOPLE across the room are all options made available to you by virtue of being a strength class. Aside from fighters, barbarians really epitomise that high-strength gameplay, and I look forward to putting that to use in my playthrough! Being a hulking mass of muscle has never been as fun as when I've been in BG3.

I haven't played a Barbarian in BG3 but it's worth noting that if it works like in tabletop, you can keep up with your rage by making a ranged attack even if the attack itself doesn't actually benefit from the rage. Useful to keep in mind especially with how spread-out some of the battles in this particular game can be
@cudef9642
@cudef9642 Жыл бұрын
This is true for early access as well. Even with a bunch of buffs to make a barbarian super fast (longer movement per turn) there's gonna be times where they're just not fast enough to hit or get hit especially towards the end of a very spread out battle. Taking a pot shot with a crossbow at like 16% accuracy is better than nothing for keeping that rage up.

One comment I want to add to the Frenzy Barbarian is the implementation on the table top makes it extremely unappealing. You get that extra attack, yay! But after your rage ends, that exhaustion sets in. And the first level of exhaustion gives you disadvantage on all checks, which is to say all skills and actions that aren't attacks. So you use your rage ability once and you have sabotaged every (non-combat) dice roll you make until your next long rest. And exhaustion levels stack, so every time you rage, you stack up the penalties--level 2 your speed is cut in half (so good luck getting around the battlefield), level 3 adds disadvantage on all attacks and saves (now you're bad at fighting!), level 4 cuts your HP in half (not great for a tank class), and level 5 reduces your speed to 0 (now you can't move!) If you somehow end up at level 6, you just flat out die. A long rest only reduces your exhaustion level by 1, so rules as written you would need to use a long rest *every time you rage* in order to actually benefit from your class feature, and if you for some reason raged multiple times in a day (because, I don't know, you have multiple rages and the adventuring day is longer than one minute) then you need to just mash the rest button over and over to get back to normal. It's a simply massive, borderline unplayable penalty to "balance" out getting an extra attack. You want to know another way you can get use your bonus action to make a single melee attack? Dual wield. Which technically anyone can do (with the limitation that you can't add your ability modifier to damage) and is a fighting style that Rangers and Fighters can start with (removing that normal penalty). Larian made the right choice. PS: Compare Frenzy Barbarian to Bear totem barbarian, who gets to take half damage from *all* sources but psychic. What penalty do they pay to balance out becoming borderline unkillable with their massive health pool and damage reduction? They don't. They're just chads. These class specializations share page space and presumably designers, but they aren't in the same league design wise.

One thing I think you could have included in the 2-level dip into Fighter MC is how strong picking up fighting style could be for barbs, with Great Weapon Style and a Great Weapon Mastery feat being an absolute damage parade of maxed out extra attacks. Or if you're feeling spicy, a two-weapon style/mastery to get less bursty damage and extra attacks but potentially more proc effects and +1 AC.

It's worth noting that Reckless Attack is also a way to increase your frequency of Critical Hits. This is important with Brutal Critical from level 9 since this is your way of getting extra damage. The problem is Brutal Critical sucks and if you want to deal lots of damage you're best off multiclassing to Fighter / Battlemaster from level 8 to get a better option for increasing your damage

Because the barb is more limited in it's party role than other classes, I think one rules question that is likely to come up is whether the berserker's Frenzy attack synergizes with most other abilities that allow you to take offensive bonus actions, e.g. an attack granted by the great weapon master feat. I think the answer is no, because you can only take 1 bonus action a turn, regardless of what you choose to do with it? But I'd love to get an answer from someone who knows the rules for sure.

There's Barbarian + Warlock too, who can cast Armor of Agathys combined with barbarian's resistance to physical damage to extend the temp hit points further, making any enemies that hit you take a lot of damage for their trouble.

I'd never thought of that. If you went Wildheart and took Bear for the damage reduction, and maybe took barbarian to 5 for the extra movement and attack, then you could get up to 7 warlock which has level 4 spell slots. Armor of Agathys isn't a concentrate spell so you can cast it before you rage, and because you take half damage from everything but psychic, the HP you get from Agathys are effectively doubled while also hurting anything that attacks you in melee, which is where you're going to be anyway. There's definitely some potential there.

pretty hyped for this game, and this class in particular still kinda wish they'd raise the level cap somewhere down the line to 20

Agreed, legit my only concern about the game. I think the level 12 cap is very restricting and forces the devs into some heavy home brewing in order to work some classes out. Many of them are definitely not well rounded at all by level 12 in tabletop; eventho dnd 5e frontloads a lot of stuff in the earlier levels, a lot of classes get some of their most iconic perks later on.

For me it would be the biggest struggle to choose subclass. Berserker seems like the most damage but wildheart seems more interesting and I'm curious how wild magic is gonna turn out

if exhaustion is not being applied, berserker is a no brainer strongest subclass

Guess I will go Berserk/Thief in my first playthrough with Karlach. Having an extra bonus attack with frenzy will just be wild.

Exhaustion seems to be broadly missing from BG3 compared to 5e. Which is good, it's a bad mechanic anyways lol. I'm glad that martials and half casters seem better across the board.

Roleplay idea: Dark Urge Berserker 10/Fighter 2 called Kratos (coz why not move him to forgotten realms), ur more like in God of War 3, leting ur rage take over whenever u feel like it is time for some fatality :D Usually played berserker in BG2 coz he felt pretty OP and u cant get trapped by Kangaax imprisonment so i just smack him together with Korgan Torn between this and sorc/warlock or warlock/fighter (maybe if wyll new origin story turns out to be great)

Imps with crossbows in the game? Nox flashbacks;). The low level imps in that game had blow guns but the higher level ones had crossbows as well.

I wonder if they still have the Gnomish trait in this game where they get advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom AND Charisma saving throws from Magic. Gnomish Barbarian, sounds weak, until you consider the ignored aspects.
