Warning: making rogue in BG3 may lead to forgetting to use the camp as often. I did that and missed a lot of dialogue. Rogues don't need to refresh nearly as much as other classes.
@monochromaticspider
@monochromaticspider 11 ай бұрын
They should have fixed that problem in the release version. But yes, it was a major PITA in EA that triggers kept overwriting each other since only one dialogue trigger could be active for the next return to camp.

A two-weapon fighting Barbarian/Thief is one of the coolest subclasses out there, especially with the extra bonus action in this game. Conan, the archetypical barbarian, was a stealthy, cunning warrior. Can have a *ton* of fun with that concept
@tangledfish
@tangledfish 11 ай бұрын
True strike is such a trap of a cantrip. You sacrifice your only action for the turn to set up a sneak attack for the next turn? Meanwhile stealth is a bonus action and lets you set up a sneak attack for the same turn. Likewise dash is a bonus action and lets you get to a flanking position for a sneak attack on an enemy fighting another character. Oh and about the arcane trickster level 9 ability, don't forget you can cast spells from scrolls. Arcane trickster will be quite interesting, depending on what spell scroll crafting looks like. Not sure Gale will be too happy about being chained to a crafting bench in camp though.
@ziwuri
@ziwuri 11 ай бұрын
I saw someone say that hide will be an action in the full release. Also, apparently any character can use spell scrolls.
@VikCachat
@VikCachat 11 ай бұрын
@@ziwuriif they have changed hide to an action, that should mean they have added hide to the rogues cunning action feature as it is with the table top rules. Hide should still be the easiest way of generating advantage, much better than true strike arguably the worst cantrip in the game, followed by spare the dying.
@tangledfish
@tangledfish 11 ай бұрын
@@ziwuri hide being a full action does change a lot of combat cheese, so that's probably a good thing. And yes anyone can cast from scrolls, but the point is arcane tricksters impose disadvantage on saves when casting from stealth. So while their spell list caps out at level 2 in the game, they will hopefully be able to use scrolls of much more potent spells from stealth for devastating results.
@ziwuri
@ziwuri 11 ай бұрын
@@VikCachat I could argue about cunning action hide, but spare the dying, the worst cantrip? Are you kidding me?
@VikCachat
@VikCachat 11 ай бұрын
Spare the dying requires touch range and all it does it makes the target creature stable, but still unconscious at 0 hit points. So since you have to move to the dying character anyway why not just use a healing potion it actually wakes them up and then they can do something. Alternatively healing word is a bonus action ranged spell. The only situation where spare the dying useful is when you don't have a spell slot or healing potion available. But consider how rare that situation is in practice, it will almost never be cast so its a waste of a cantrip pick.

Frenzy Barbarian 5: Extra attack and can attack as a bonus action Thief Rogue 3: Gets a second bonus action and can Dash as a bonus action By level 8 you'll be able to Attack, Extra Attack, Bonus Attack, Bonus Attack with Advantage using Reckless Attack using a giant 2H Weapon. This is what Fighters dream about at level 20; you do it 12 levels earlier. Or you could use your first Bonus Action to Rage, your second Bonus Action to Dash 35 feet, and still make two attacks. You can also make this a Dex Barb with a Longbow and land sneak attack damage. Best of all you can still get to Barb 8 / Rogue 4 and not miss a single ASI or Feat.

This doesn’t work. It’s been tested in early access. Reckless attack can only be used once per turn. You can check this out by using the Helmet of Grit to get another bonus action. Still a decent combo since it lets you dash+reckless attack, or rage and then reckless attack. Or just reckless attack and reckless throw. But no, you can’t reckless attack twice. Cheers.
@ziwuri

I think they're pretty great beginner classes also. Both my first western RPG (Neverwinter Nights) & first tabletop experience was as a Rogue. They tend to have more inherent skills than a Fighter or Barbarian when it comes to rolling outside of combat, they can play with most players tendency to be a bit chaotic, they teach tactics without it being over the top & they can dabble in magic easier. Without it being overwhelming.

My second run is going to be more of an exploration run, and I think the arcane trickster will excel at that- upgraded mage hand, find familiar, plus all the B&E and I'll grab the Lucky feat for checks. Back in 3e, I had a mapmaker rogue. Made money diving in dungeons, sure, but made just as much making and selling hand-drawn maps of the wilds (Skill: profession - mapmaker). In 5th edition, and something I'm going to try with BG3, I had a Monk/Rogue. A few levels to get cunning action, increases to sneak attack and expertise, and the rest in monk. For pen and paper, I was an inquisitive who was able to get advantage for the entire fight with a bonus action (finding weak-spots). However, with my monk levels I started getting heavily into brawling and grapples. Since BG3 doesn't have grapple mechanics, I plan on gaining expertise in Athletics and shoving everyone off cliffs.

Been loving arcane trickster Astarion with my warlock and an eldritch knight. Leave grease and chromatic orb puddles everywhere, and fog/darkness spells, with some mobility spells like longstride and jump. Also good target damage with the warlock spells and having a fighter + rogue. Its nice that Astarion, Shadowheart and Tav all have darkvision. Think you could learn disguise self on all 4 members of that team as well which could be fun to do a stealth or deception game.

Breakin' the Law, Breakin' the Law... Y'know, I don't think I've ever properly played a Rogue. I mean, there's always one in the party (both in tabletop and video games), and they're always useful. I hope rogue/barbarian works properly, but I'm not sure it will. The main reason both classes work together on 5e is because the finesse rule says you "CAN use dexterity to attack", the sneak attack says "you have to attack with a ranged weapon or melee weapon with the finesse property" and barbarians rage (and reckless attack) says "you have to attack with a melee weapon using strength". The rules interpretation is that you can use a finesse weapon with strength and benefit from both

This is by far the most OP class atm. Unless they plan on fixing enemy AI upon release you can solo 'almost' any encounter with a rogue. Hide whole party away from sight, take Astarion - hide - sneak attack - hide bonus action - end turn - sneak attack - hide bonus action - rinse+repeat. As long as the enemy don't see you on the end turn they just stand there taking sneak attack after sneak attack. Helps in some of the more tricky fights like the area underneath blighted village.

Would be interesting to push my limits as well as checking out some hidden outcomes Larian had prepared for us. Barbarian Rogue multiclass makes perfect sense from a roleplaying perspective. Do you remember the movei Scorpion King and the character Matthias played by Dwayne Johnson? Barbarian Rogue multi-class right there. It's also a very powerful class combination if you choose the Thief subclass in BG3 because a Barbarian will love having extra bonus actions (particularly Berserkers who can use these for extra attacks) as they can Rage and still use a bonus action to jump or use a Cunning Dash to get into melee quickly on the same turn. 3 levels of Rogue are also easy to dip for since levels 10-12 don't really give the Barbarian much benefit.

there is a thing i'm considering doing as a rogue thief and that's having a lot of strength ontop of having a lot of dexterity, reason is because you do get an extra bonus action and also rogue necessitate the need for movement, and what strength does is let you shove better which is a bonus action so you could shove 2 enemies off a cliff for example and if you don't have strength it's more likely you will just fail to shove anything, so in some cases for example if you are standing on a high ground and some enemies tries to reach you you could just push them off the cliff you're standing on. the other thing you do get from strength is jump distance which could be really beneficial to a rogue who wants to traverse the battlefield jumping across larger gaps or up a cliff otherwise you would need to maybe run around the entire battlefield to get to that high ground otherwise which might have a ton of enemies in the way or make it really hard to reach. also because you do get 2 bonus actions you can jump twice and with that you could possibly outrun an enemy by jumping up two cliffs or up a cliff and across a gap or across 2 gaps as the enemy most likely can only jump once. however having high strength makes you sacrifice other stats so you might not want to do that but i think it depends on your playstyle and what other members you have in your party, because perception or deception or persuasion or invistigation or something else could really be beneficial aswell or if not downright necessary. but just functionally as the only class/subclass that gets an extra bonus action just having more strength lets you just get more use out of it. thoughts?

Rogues have always been a tricky class to use in CRPGs in my opinion. Their skills at sniffing out traps, hidden areas and lockpicking are invaluable to a party but largely end up being a waste of space during melee combat. By the time things line up in their favor to do massive damage, my MC and other fighters have already carved them into bloody stumps and moved on to the next target. They are good for taking out the random straggler or as bait to lure enemies into an ambush from time to time but I find them more competent in combat with a bow. Although at that point I lose the benefit of a bloodhound sniffing out traps and alarms as that requires them to be in the forefront rather than the back.

I'm not sure on the wording in BG, but in 5e, the rogue's uncanny dodge stacks with Barbarian rage resistance which makes you into a god tank. Not only that you can have insane Armour class as well with the ability to invest fully in dex and con (you could go the strength route for 2 handed weapons but I don't think its worth it TBH) and wield a shield and rapier, gaining a 19 AC as a barbarian (10 + dex + con from Barbarian) along with quartering most of your damage. On top of this is constant advantage on demand for sneak attack. Expertise being able to turn you into the best grappler in the game (expertise + advantage). All of this is on top of the Thief+Frenzy combination of death.

My plan is to play lawful aristocrat fencer (rogue 1 -> fighter 5 -> rogue+). Battle master perks support rogue in many ways, even though some cool ones are missing. Rogue skills represent extensive education. However, I'm worried about one thing. In tabletop and Solasta, if you have multiple attacks, any first hit would qualify as a sneak attacks. In BG3 they switched sneak attack into a skill, so I assume I can't combine it with second fighter attack at all?

Theoretically, the Reckless attack from the Barbarian should only work with STR based attacks (I already though about Rogue/Barbarian multiclass combination on the tabletop 😂)

In the tabletop version, finesse uses dex or str, you get to choose which one, it's possible to use a finesse weapon with STR so it works because sneak attack in tabletop only specifies finesse not that you have to use dex for it. The exact implementation in game has yet to be seen though.

Since Baldur's Gate 3 doesn't have a human DM at the helm, those playing an Assassin Rogue should try to start EVERY combat with an assassination. Depending on what they allow for an Arcane Trickster's Legerdemain you could get up to all kinds of mischief. Specifically passing a Sleight of Hand Check against a target's Perception will allow you to plant or steal an item worn or carried by the target without being noticed. E.g. in a crowd you can pick pockets 30' away, invisibly.

Mobility is king, and that means the thieve rogue is the king of kings xD Double bonus action means you can always position yourself with disengage and dash, or you can stealth for advantage, attack, and stealth again to avoid attack, or if you start a turn in stealth attack, dash away and hide again, if you carry a candle, you can always dip your weapon... Double bonus action is so good

I’ve always thought the “whoosh! Now you can’t see me right uh- right here …whooosh” implementation of sneak attack in crpgs was a bit silly, but at least there’s a bit more going on here. 😅

Was sneak attack changed to work with all weapons (rather than just ranged and finesse weapons)? Or was that never an official rule?

You mention the barb/rogue multiclass, which I was planning on playing. However I noticed Sneak attack and Reckless attack are separate actions so I'm unsure if the two of them will be able to be combined?

If true strike doesn’t break stealth, it might actually be a DECENT cantrip for the rogue if you use it before combat starts. Bc we all know how bad that cantrip really is /:

I don't really understand how the Assassin is more combat oriented than the Thief? Is it because their special skills are more focused on heavy damage, while the Thief's extra action could be used for something that is non-combat?

Rogue is typically my go-to first class for a crpg playthrough. But MAN, it's been INCREDIBLY disappointing to have to manually select sneak attacks to apply that damage, and half the time it seems like typical flanking doesn't actually give you Sneak Attack potential (i wonder if this is a bug for me?). But more than anything, having to remember every single time to switch the type of attack to benefit from the rogue's KEY combat move is so disheartening. I don't remember ever having to manually do this in literally any other crpg. It was always just passively applied. I desperately hope someone mods this out so it passively applies whenever it can in combat. Its just such a bizarre choice to make it a separate attack entirely and it makes rogue feel less fun at its class fantasy core.
