The game itself does have "acts" but it's not really presented like a play. Raphael as a character though is *extremely* theatrical and it's entirely in character for him to have a Disney villain song. Part of what makes it so memorable is that it kind of comes out of left field since nothing else in the game is like that but also completely fits with the moment.

To answer some questions (SPOILERS) The game is not structured like a play, but the character Raphael is Incredibly extra (at one point you can actually catch him practicing his lines before talking to you). Raphael is what you get if an arch demon was a Disney villian. The House of Hope is in hell, and his song plays during his boss fight. I think most of us symultaniously laughed and got chills when he started belting lyrics during his boss fight like an edgy Disney villian

Oh god, I could go on and on about Raphael's Final Act. From the buildup of Raphael himself over the course of the game, to the fact that he's actually singing it in-game during the fight, it's such a treasure of a song. To address a few things; Yes, BG3 kind of plays out like a play. It has a classic 3 Act Structure, with each act taking placing in a different zone. Raphael himself is introduced very close to the beginning of the game, and he's a persistent character throughout the game. He's a Devil from the Hells, specifically a Cambion. And he's your stereotypical Devil character; constantly trying to goad you into taking a deal with him, promising to solve your character's main problem, if only you do him a tiny small favor. It is, of course, a deal that is heavily skewed in his favor, but one of the cool aspects of BG3 is that you can actually take it, if you'd like to. The man is also the personification of Egotism. His 'bed-slave' that he keeps in his chambers is glamoured to appear as...him, so that he can literally sleep with himself. He's also grandiose and incredibly extra. Think the most exaggerated theater kid you've ever met. Every time he appears, his opening dialogue is him quoting a play / poem, and as I mentioned earlier, it plays during his Boss Fight if you choose to break into his home, which is the House of Hope. The singer is the actual Voice Actor for Raphael, Andrew Wincott, and if you put him under a Silence effect, the music stops, and then resumes if the effect ends. Honest to god, I believe that everyone should give BG3 a play, even if it doesn't seem like your style of game. It is one of the best games I've played in the past decade, and every accolade it's gotten is more than deserved.

Raphael is a literal devil, and a totally narcissistic, dramatic and magnificent bastard. This is his boss battle music (Depending on your choices, you can avoid the fight or even side with the devil) Not only he completely hams it like a classic Disney villain, he is actually singing it during the boss battle. There are certain spells or skills that can silence or stun the opponent, and when you use it against Raphael during the fight, the vocals get cut away. Also in his house there is a memo of the lyrics, suggesting Raphael wrote it himself over and over until he felt it was perfect. This left a huge impact to the players since it's completely fitting with his personality.

You shouldn't have to justify not having interest in the game itself. It's a 100 hours long RPG, and if those games aren't your thing, then it's not something that you can just "give a shot regardless" without investing tons of time we all don't have. Just glad you appreciate the music, it's the same composer who did the Divinity: Original Sin OST, which I even like more personally. But BG3 also has fantastic songs.

So, Raphael is sort of a secret boss, you have to really go out of your way to fight him. He's a devil that's been built up for the whole game, tempting your party with deals, etc. The vision of a play is very accurate, with how Raph plays the part of a high-society, refined yet sinister person His voice actor is the male vocalist in the song, so Raphael is quite literally singing/peeforming his own boss theme. The Danny Elfman and nightmare before christmas comparison is absolutely SPOT-ON. The inspirations are very clear and its a joy beyond belief. Its amazing what they made here. Its been a while since we had such a creative song in gaming, with all those elements. Beautiful beyond words. I will also add that I saw a similar "performance style" in an underrated indie gem called "Figment". With rhymes and all, super fun, doing boss fights basically having the enemy doing a "performance" with incredible writing. A good number of tracks in BG3 are absolute jaw-dropping masterpieces. Impressive as hell, fresh like nothing else. BG2 had masterful music as well (whole franchise in fact), so I'm kinda glad the quality is once again through the roof for today's standards ! PS: I am also like you, I am happy if I can experience a game's great music, even if I never play the game. True music fan I guess !! haha.

I have to say, one of the composer’s strengths is how he really grants some of his songs an almost ghostly etherealness. He’s very good at bringing out the haunting and beautiful quality of voice artists. Down by the River, Raphael’s Final Act, and the haunting dungeon themes from Divinity Original Sin 2 really hit that quality home.

Raphael is basically a Shakespearean/Disney Villain, initially polite, eloquent, supremely confident, charismatic, but completely ruthless (the epitome of "diabolical", a literal devil). As silly as it seems in a vacuum, him singing the actual plot and what is happening is 100% in his character. He tries to make a deal with you ("No more deals"), but he has something you need so you sneak into his home in Hell, the "House of Hope" (an ironic name), to steal it, and he catches you, and the hardest fight in the game ensues as he sings about your impending doom. The song/sequence "Nightsong" guaranteed BG3 would be in at least my top 3 of 2023, but the House of Hope pushed it to #1.

Down by the River is just so good. The whole OST, everytime I randomly stumble upon it, makes me stop what I'm doing and reminisce of my playthrough. I did try to start an evil run, but I think I'm too kind, I can't be rude to NPCs 😂 Raphael's Final act is sung by Raphael's voice actor. (and no, it's not Danny Elfman, but Andrew Wincott). Also, the other voice is indeed the same as Down by the River Spoiler of when it plays: It's Raphel's battle theme (he's a devil, and optional boss), but honestly, saying it's a play isn't that far off. Raphael definitely sees the world as a scene and you dolls to play with in his own story. But yeah, you start the battle, but Raphael's voice surprises you by starting to sing after a minute or so only. One cool detail is that as this is Raphael singing, f you silence him in battle, he stops. By the way, you never did a "I pick what I want to listen to every 100 episodes" thing since the Minecraft Rubedo episode, did you? If you did stop, I don't now why, but to me it's fair for you to pick something from time to time. Can't you consider yourself a platinum member and push a request's priorty every month? 😂

I played BG3 since Early Access for a few years before release and the music is timeless. I still listen to it nearly every day. Down by the river was a part of the early access for us and to this day I still sing along every time I hear it. Raphael's song that has no title and is just musical instruments is what you hear as you sneak around the devil's house if that helps.

Down by the River gives me suuuch Loreena McKennitt vibes. The main melody is threaded throughout the entire game, it's incredibly catchy and I didn't mind one bit listening to this song for about an hour on loop while creating my character! Baldur's Gate 3 has a lot of music that I'd say is unlike a lot of things you hear in video games. And still, Raphael's final act is such a shock to system even hours into the game because it's so unexpected but absolutely perfect for the moment.

Playing the game and accidentally stumbling upon Raphael's boss fight (it's completely optional, as it requires you to follow a side quest that you can easily miss if you're not exploring as much as the game allows you to) was certainly an interesting experience. When the fight started, and I heard him start to sing, it made the fight much more enjoyable, and it did feel like I was in a musical performance. Picture a battle against an actual devil, inside his hourse that is located within one of the circles of Hell. The organ, and especially the melody, definitely give a demonic vibe too. Also, I had not listened to the full version of Down By The River yet, and I love it. It's extremely beautiful and gave me goose bumps throughout the entire song.

I love the lore around Down by the River. It goes back to the early access version of the game and the lyrics tell a story. Spoilers: The song relates to the parasite in your character’s brain that wants to take over your character’s body. When your character goes to sleep for the day, they have vivid dreams in which they’re visited by a beautiful person. The person says all sorts of seductive things to try to get your character to let go and stay with them in the dream on a hillside down by a river. Since the world has all sorts of violence and horror, the dream is an appealing fantasy. In reality though, the person in the dream represents the brain parasite trying to convince your character to become complacent and stop resisting it. If you stay with it “down by the river,” you essentially lose yourself in the fantasy and it kills you, taking over your body. They changed the dream visitor in the full version of the game, but it was a cool inspiration for the song.

A fan favorite fun fact that surprisingly havent seen anyone mention: Because Raphael is actually singing his own battle theme diegetically during combat, if you zoom at him you can see he's actually moving his mouth when singing, and if you cast a Mute spell on him, his voice is removed from the song until he's unmuted again!

I would like to recommend checking out Lost Odysseys OST as well, it is by Nobue Uematsu, the same composer who is responsible for all the famous Final Fantasy music. Due to Xbox excluvisity the game didn't get near as much visibility as it deserved. It is one of my favourite OSTs with a wide range of great songs

You should go see some local theatre! I'm biased, I studied performance art in college and for a long time thought I was going to do it professionally, but I think everyone should see some live theatre as an adult. It's kind of like reading where I think a lot of people get forced exposure at young ages and due to that they develop an aversion to it. There are a lot of contemporary shows and musicals that do all sorts of musical genres, not just the old bombastic Guys and Dolls style of American musical theatre that I think a lot of people assume all musicals are like. Knowing that you have a broad appreciation for music I guarantee there's musicals you would love.

As someone who loves Baldur's Gate 3 and tabletop roleplaying games in general, I understand why you don't want to play BG3. It's an incredibly long and complex game most people won't have the time or attention span to complete. But, if you have any interest in fantasy RPGs (western ones in particular), I'd recommend to check it out. Maybe play it with a few of your trusted patrons/friends for a day because it has co-op for up to 4 players and they can walk you through character creation, the basic gameplay, and controls. As far as Raphael goes, he's an archdevil who is a pure black in a morally grey world. He's an egotistical maniac who is a villian, knows it, and revels in it. Most people who have played through most of BG3 would probably have a love-hate relationship with him lol.

"Is the game like a play?" - The game is divided into sections (acts). When you enter the next act's region, you will become unable to access things from the previous one anymore. (Though in Act 2 you can go back to the *places* of Act 1, but time has now passed, so you can't access most of the quests and stuff anymore.)
