My experience is that enjoyment trumps everything else. Like some people consider Dragon Age 2 as their favorite despite being a rushed mess imo but they overlook the flaws and find something great. I just try not to get overhyped anymore and just hope I enjoy it.

Yeah my buddy loved the hate-love element of DA2, I personally think it's the bottom of the franchise. For now, at least.

Dude, I love your take on it. But with years dealing with software development for big corps and small companies alaike, I can tell you exactly what ot all comes down to: Risk. Larian doesn't have a huge board of investors driving what is the maximum risk you can take, which means they can go crazy on aiming for the dream game. So in a sense I agree with the OP, you can't raise the bar on a Developer level but you can most definitly raise the bar on a corporate level. Investors have a lot to learn from Larian

Yeah it’s definitely a corporate problem most game developers would love to spend 3 more years on their game to make it perfect I imagine. That’s probably really frustrating, I hope this changes.

My thoughts are it all comes down to monetization...I was just telling my buddy that if you gave this finished product to a triple A publisher...the first thing they would do is break it into multiple dlcs...or hell...even games. Also Larian literally put Fun as the top priority...where it's obviously not with so many other games...which seems wild to say but true.

When I heard about those comments, my initial flippant reaction was "sucks to be you!" But I think on balance once-in-a-decade hyper-good and hyper-successful phenomena, take Game of Thrones making it to HBO as an example, in the end also leads to more money from on high trying to follow in its footsteps - from the money-bags guys that have no vision themselves, but know how to read a revenue sheet. And it lowers the risk perceived by the bean counters for going in a certain direction - a little. So I don't fully buy the idea that having BG3 as a shining, incredibly rare example of what can be done in the medium HURTS other companies working in the same area. Not in the aggregate at least. I think as an overall effect it might be a NET plus for those companies over time. However, I certainly can identify with how shitty it might make an individual developer feel for a while - much like an aspiring cellist hearing Yo-Yo Ma for the first time and deciding to quit on the spot. I'm guessing that while the number of attempts in this area might increase in the years to come, the success- to-failure ratio probably will not change. The past couple of years have amply demonstrated that to be the case for the stuff produced in the legacy of GOT. I know I'm going to get a good laugh when the attempted Elden Ring clones start coming out and they are crap because they are just hard but manage to totally miss the super delicate tuning and balance FROM has now got nailed.

After looking at Nelson Jr explain what he meant by not letting this game set expectations I think the backlash against him was really unreasonable. It wasn't coming from a place of jealousy, but a place of frustration in why the industry is so infrequently able to put games out like this. He was trying to bring attention to an issue and everyone treated him like he was being a whiny baby.

If games like this are an anomaly then me buying games is about to become an "anomaly", then let's see what state the industry is in. You can put all your best ideas on one path or you can spread your best ideas across all the paths. In first option that one path has 100% of the best ideas and in second option every path has 20% of your best ideas. When you have multiple choises you are always compromising potential of other paths because at some point those paths cross and it needs to feel good, no matter wich path you came there.

What if your best ideas are not all compatible with one path? And what is wrong with compromise? And doesn't choice mean you DON'T have to compromise? Making just one path that appeases everything is much more compromising than allowing multiple uncompromised paths to play out.

Yes some paths lead somewhere where some of your best ideas couldn't happen, that's true. Choise mean for player that you don't have to compromise, but for writer it's not. You have your idea of the story and where it ends, then you put multiple paths and now you have to figure out way to get to the end or compromise and fix ending to work with all yout paths. And if you fix one thing, many more could arise because of that fix. Your ultimate best path could be written again that other paths fits that and now you don't have your best ideal ending. You can make multiple endings ofcourse, but not all of them can be the best.

Personally, BD3 has a 0% chance of surpassing Kingdom Come Deliverance for me. So this advertising just makes me view it with more skepticism. Beyond that, I haven't played a Larian game where I genuinely enjoyed their writing or characterizations.

Pasta, sushi, cheesecake. Considering how fast technology and game development is advancing, no game will ever achieve greatest-of-all-time status. Our PC's are obsolete every 4 years. Video games that are ten years old look severely dated. And people around here are asking if they should play Baldur's I & II, which are nearly 25-years-old, and look hideous.
