I like how the Oathbreaker is presented as not just the "edgy, I'm evil now >:)" option but as an alternative way to still do what's right without being tied to an oath. Sure, you raise the dead and wield shadows, but you can still use that for a good purpose
@Motleydoll123 Жыл бұрын
Indeed. Oaths can bind you to potentially do horrendous things(oath of conquest) as well as potentially good deeds. It all depends on your oath you swore before breaking it. Breaking your oath can free you from the obligations, but it can also mark you as one who betrayed another. You have great power and the freedom to wield it as you desire, for good or Ill, but it can be tempting to use the power to serve yourself above all others and hurt people.

My favorite part of all this is that the Oathbreaker doesn't begrudge you if you choose to reclaim your Oath and serve your god once more. He knows firsthand the pain and sorrow of knowing you're unworthy to serve, and sees it as admirable that you want to do better and BE better. It gives a lot of dimension to a class that is usually played on the tabletop by edgelords who want a Paladin's powers without their responsibilities. He's the best type of fallen hero archetype: a man whose conscience did not allow him to follow his lord's path and lives with the consequences of his transgression. Masterful writing.
@smartyben101 Жыл бұрын
You can reclaim your oath even after you did something wrong?
@DVAcme Жыл бұрын
@@smartyben101 Yes, as long as if it's not something irredeemably bad. Good gods tend to be forgiving, as long as you don't do something truly monstrous and are legitimately remorseful. You have to usually atone through ritual and through doing some sort of quest to regain your god's favor, though. In the case of 5th Edition, where Paladins are more based on their Oath instead of their alignment, its more forgiving, actually. Back in 3.5, falling from grace as a Paladin was FUCKING ROUGH, you basically became the most useless member of your team until you regained favor.

@@smartyben101Apparently 2000 gold will do the trick.
@DVAcme Жыл бұрын
@EmeraldDream Here's the thing: in D&D, there are three currencies, Copper, Silver and Gold. Imagine a Copper is a cent, a Silver is a dollar and a Gold is 10 dollars. 2,000 gold would be $20,000 DOLLARS. That's a SHITTON of money. And, while yeah, in the game you're just throwing money at the problem, in D&D terms, what you're doing is sacrificing an amount of money to your god's church as atonement for your trangression. They likely left the questing part of it out cause it'd be HELLA tedious if you had to quest for atonement every time you transgress in the game. A Paladin without his god's favor is MASSIVELY crippled. No Lay On Hands, no Divine Spellcasting, no Turn Undead, and if you had a heavenly steed, you're hoofing it on foot now. A disgraced Paladin is basically a shitty Fighter.

@SH1NK1R01 Жыл бұрын
yeah over all i agree that there should at least be a parenthesis tag to warn that this option will break your oath. reading the descriptions for the current oaths does clearly state what breaks it though. devotion breaks if you do anything that directly or indirectly leads to the harm or death or innocents. this is determined by your own knowledge. so if you don't know a character is evil and murder them you will break the oath since you willingly murdered what would have been an innocent to your character. oath of ancients is actually the harder one to keep. because it governs nature and the preservation of natural order. so murder and torture often wont break the oath. but necromancy or being friendly with demonic entities breaks the oath. this one is far more vague and why i think they should just add the warning.
@dovakiin296 Жыл бұрын
@@SH1NK1R01 I don't like the oaths are based on the perspective of the paladin, and the shifting of perspectives or a broadening of their understanding is what causes one to become an oathbreaker. At least warlocks knew what they were getting into when they sold their souls.

I feel like there might be a disconnect between a video game letting you do that and a tabletop game. Any old D&D campaign, you should *absolutely* be allowed to roll an Oathbreaker immediately when you can create infinite lore for your character and detail the reasons they broke their oath before the game even started. For a video game to do it when has this grandiose...rather ironically for me to say come-to-Jesus moment with your oath breaking, it'd be pretty hard to have that same weight if you skipped that entire intro and just *were* one with very little backstory at all except your race/background choices. What I think Larian should do is say that this spirit guy already knows you and would just show up to talk to you after you escape the tutorial ship and be surprised at how much shit you just got yourself into when he looked away for just one day. Maybe even joke that you managed to find far worse trouble than the pain you experienced when you first broke your oath, and you can cleverly re-use the choices presented here of why you broke your oath like he wants to make sure you haven't been tempered too much by the tadpole yet.

If you break you Oath for good reasons that is a Redemption Paladin, not an Oathbreaker. Why do people still not get how that part works?
@positivecayde395 Жыл бұрын
That is not how it works. Redemption Paladin is an Oath you swear, and it isn't about you redeeming yourself but helping others find Redemption. You break your oath and you're an Oathbreaker. That's always how it worked.

I understand what they are doing from a gameplay perspective but the cost to the world building is just terrible. I guess the horrifying moral complexity of breaking your oath to a god is made all better for the bargain price of 2 skyrim NPCs. After all rules are something only poor Paladins have to worry about.

Paladins don’t get their powers from gods, this is based on 5e.
@centurion7398 Жыл бұрын
@@MayHugger I'm pretty familiar with DnD 5e. And yes it is setting specific where anybodies power comes from. If you decide in your setting your Paladin's have to pet a sufficient number of kittens to smite the enemy then so be it. However this setting is Forgotten realms and in every prior piece of material set in those realms Paladins are divine casters so yea they absolutely swear those oaths to the gods. Even if it isn't any one specific god it is sworn to the gods. Not that any of this matters because in world building there are a few ways to do something well and a whole buncha ways to do things poorly. The term "oath" implies that there is a binding contract being made and if the penalty for violating the sacred oath of a holy warrior is 2,000 dollarydinos then your not a holy warrior. Just a privileged prick with the money to burn on a little genocide with divine power here and there. Theoretically you could just swear said oath kill 2,000 people that each had one miserable gold piece to their name and then go get your good guy powers back with your blood soaked coin. That's why in order to be an oathbreaker the book says you must be evil. Because to take divinely granted powers and twist them to selfish ends is an evil act. It's built into the fantasy of the class. Otherwise your just playing an eldritch knight or a ranger or any other kind of half caster half fighter class that gets magic and swords, but with Paladin numbers on your character sheet. If you play a ranger that hates animals and nature and only ever stays in his house inventing gadgets, then why bother with a ranger at all? Same thing with Pally. I'm all for morally complex characters but that moral complexity is made cheap and pointless if the morality system is fucked up irreparably in the process.

@@centurion73985e players handbook is based on the Forgotten Realms. If they changed the lore then you don’t have to like it, but that is the lore now. It has been retconned. BG3 has to follow the new lore

@@centurion7398 I agree with you. I also preferred the version where paladins were linked to a deity (even if I can work with the 5e version) and I would have preferred it if paladins in Forgotten Realms could choose divinity. I also find that paying 2K gold to regain your oath is too easy and not very serious. A fallen paladin should have to do penance through actions. And if he breaks his oath too many times, he should be stuck in an oathbreaker. With maybe one or two warnings before. If resources are an issue to create these penance, then just being stuck in oathbreaker should be better than this 2K gold mechanics. It's nice that Larian made some mechanics about fallen paladin and oathbreaker but like you said the cost in worldbuilding is too heavy.

It's reasons like this that I think Larian should not be getting the praise people are giving it. Much like the "soulsborne" games with artificial difficult to lure you in, BG3 is the absolute king of save scumming because the game gives you literally no agency as to know what is going to happen based on your decisions. This is extremely apparent in interactions with companions and highly unrealistic as well. I had to dump Gale because, in spite of only using him a handful of times in the party, before getting my based short stack bard, there came a dialogue option where the only two choices were to kick him out permanently or have gay sex with him. It's fucking stupid.
@UltimaKeyMaster Жыл бұрын
I know the companions are more of a contested issue, but I don't think it's hard to figure out how to know what breaks your oath when your oath kinda plainly lays out what your oath is.
