I remember the first time I played Neverwinter Nights, before knowing anything about DnD, I played as a Ranger Assassin named Bedford Woodstalker. He duel-wielded katanas, cuz like I said, I had no idea what I was doing. Now I'm thinking of recreating Bedford in BG3 as a Ranger Rogue with the Gloomstalker and Assassin subclasses to make an actual stealth killer.

I like the changes they made. With a wood elf, folk hero, bounty hunter, urban tracker I can be a skill monkey with athletics, sleight of hand, stealth, investigation, nature, animal handling, insight, perception and survival. Throw some points into wis and int and I'm all set. Also no rogue needed now.

This honestly seems like one of the more enjoyable takes of ranger, in standard 5E table top they have some heavily specialized features that are VERY niche. But they can be downright necessary in some campaigns that involve extended traveling across counties, countries or even full continents. Then again in a game I ran, we added the "rangers journal" which was sort of like a wizards book but for Favored enemies and Terrains. Essentially any competent ranger would keep a document of their travels and the creatures and places they've come across if they ever need to reference it later. It was a sort of mini game for our ranger to complete tasks and if he did so successfully he could swap any Favored enemy or Terrain for another one in the book. Many of them were done during his downtime and he seemed to love it, they were small quests and they varied in challenge. Spend 10 days in the arctic terrain and survive without using magic or bringing food, successfully hunt/track 10 different creatures within a grasslands. There was usually 2 or 3 that would if done successfully unlock that creature type or that terrain type for swapping. If I remember correctly he could spend 8 unbroken hours of refreshing his memory using his book to swap 1 creature type or 1 terrain type for a different one. He took his role as party guide seriously and everyone seemed to love his dedication to learning new monster and terrain lore, he also took several levels in barbarian I think for elk subclass. He really wanted that level 6 double speed long range traveling pace which basically made them in high demand from merchants or nobles, people who wanted protection and swift travel. It got to the point where it would be worth it not to teleport to places using teleportation circle, instead of taking an 8 day trip on foot, party is facing about a 2-3 day trip on horseback.

@@DefinitelyNotBender Lol, no way in hell. Ranger is the worst class in terms of its mechanics, especially when compared to other half-casters like the paladin. Half of his mechanics are stupidly written and thought of, the other half offer no value progression whatsoever. And that's without considering the beast master's archetype at all. I would agree if you say the ranger NOW is much better because they added so many other options and did a redux on him. But PHB Ranger is just so dumb. Like, they didn't know what to do with him. It says enough on how bad he was that they actually did a redux on him and the beastmaster archetype...

@@lovethepandainyou you’re correct Ranger has an overhaul with Tasha’s Cauldron. It’s not bad at all anymore. I don’t think anyone plays with the PHB Ranger. That’s what I meant, Ranger is better now. Poor Monks, though.
@probablythedm1669
@probablythedm1669 11 ай бұрын
@@lovethepandainyouranger has a bunch of duds in their features, but the base class is still strong in damage. The new options in Tasha's gave them optional fetaures which are useful and good, so now they do good damage and have decent features. Meanwhile, monk deala the least damage of all martials, can't do anything unique but be okay at running away without ki, has the worst AC of all martials, the smallest hit dice and just spamming stunning strike (which is resisted most of the time, but great when it lands) is not that fun nor does it boost their poor damage output. Then they get dunked on because their AC will be worse than a wizard (who will generally start out with 17-20 AC, thanks to shield and mage armor). Monks are basically a liabilty and as a DM you need to go easy on them so they can actually have fun and feel like they're useful. No other class needs me to go easy on them just so they can be okay. I love monks, but man do they just not deliver in the game as written. Everything fun is tied to ki and they run out by the second or third round of combat and just become a bag of hit points that does poor damage. 😒

Began playing EA after Patch 4 dropped, having decided that my first playthrough would be a Beast Master Ranger with the Giant Spider Summon Companion, which was OP. My playthrough became a partial when I discovered that the Spider was no longer Giant, or, as a result, OP. That was it for the Ranger until the most recent Patch, #9. The Summon Companions were reworked, and the Spider, now the Wolf Spider, was once again OP with Entomb. By the time I began a full playthrough however, it had been nerfed again. While Entombed now only lasts 3 turns, it remains powerful. Also, Beast Tamer is now useful, as you can have both a Familiar, and a Companion. Add in Sharpshooter at full release, and the Beast Master is close to S tier. A word of caution though. NPC's don't like the Spider, including Merchants, which can be costly. As of now my first Ranger playthrough will be 5 lvls of Gloom Stalker, 4 Battle Master Fighter, 3 Assassin Rogue.

Absolutely agree. Ranger is a great option thematically, but the D&D 5e has never made it viable as a support or DPS class. I like some of the changes Laurian did, I wish the actual tabletop would adopt some of these and finally make the class playable as is rather than a significant dip elsewhere. Fighter dip is good option here as well.

Really considering ranger/rogue or ranger/cleric as my first (non-origin) character, as I do think it fills a niche that the companions dont really fill and synergizes pretty well with the companions I am most interested in for a first playthrough as a chaotic good character (wyll, gale and karlach, maybe switching it up somewhat with minsk, halsin or jaheira, who also seem really cool in that regard.)

Ranger was something I was considering looking at the party composition too. A lot of the “good” leaning characters are either melee focused or pure casters.

Rogue/ranger can stack sneak attack and hunter's mark in pen and paper. With dual wielding and extra attack, also appropriate sub-class from rogue you can put quite high damage during mid game. If it is possible to multiclass fighter(3x class) too, you can take action surge and delete most enemies in one turn.

Random fact Ranger/ Cleric was one of the strongest multi classes in the old BG games.

Rangers usually got 2wfighting without meeting the dex requirements and could invest more in strength. Even 2h Rangers were good, with Minsc being incredibly prominent and even being in BG3.

I do hope there's some more beasts, I feel like we're really missing a wildcat of some kind.. a tiger, a panther, that kind of thing. I imagine Druids (Moon especially) will level and get new wildshapes, more than anything we've seen in EA, such as flying and swimming.. I wonder if Ranger's will get new beasts...

@@MortismalGaming yeah 😆. I didn't notice the first time because I usually have these class overviews running in the background while I work on other stuff. Might be what other people are doing too. Or ppl just don't know the character, especially after the mess that was Dark Alliance.

I started rather boring with a sweet-talking Human Fighter, but after a few hours I decided to play as a Drow (the bad kind) Ranger. After a few more hours I'm now a dual-wielding stalker, who can talk to animals and is also able to summon a cat. And I'm always the one starting a fight, putting a mark for extra damage on my enemy, making me pretty good in fights, too. I didn't even try pickpocketing yet. Shouldn't be to bad with Dex 17 either. I love my Drow Ranger so far.

I almost always do a bow build in RPGs (even if those RPGs don't favor bow builds...looking at you, Elden Ring). So, I think I'll be going gloomstalker/assassin and pew-pewing from the shadows.

Except heres the thing Dont spamm Hunters Mark, while yes it CAN be useful for Legendary resistance enemies where straight damage works for them But heres the thing.... in normal encounters you can use other spells SOO much more effectively Your enemy is rolling on Advantage(Pack Tactics, Magical Darkness, Normal Darkness but you or someone else in the party doesnt have Dark Vision) towards your party? Use Fog Cloud on your party to make both them and you roll on Neutral *Disclaimer do not use against Blind Sight Foes* You dont want Enemies to get closer? Spike Growth and Plant Growth You want to Body Block and attack 8 times? Conjure Animals 8 Wolfes or 8 Velociraptors You want your Heavy Armor Party member go together stealthing? Cast Pass Without Trace

Never played Dnd, only divinity original sin 1 and 2, so i'm a bit lost on classes and multiclassing haha. I was looking at monk's elemental subclass and wondered what you would probably multiclass it with, maybe warlock blade pact? Other than that i would probably opt for a dual wield crit build that's not reliant on too much stealth gameplay, so probably Barbarian / fighter/ranger or rogue? And a standard magical spell slinging build that would feel similar to a pyro/earth or Water / Lightning focused build.

DnD5E Classes which BG3 are using are quite different than DoS Also, the only Crit fishing build that ever worked are 5 level into Gloom Stalker Ranger for initiative bonus and movement equal to Wisdom(And you want 14 because its not THAT mandatory to have 16 Wisdom) and 3 levels into Assassin Rogue Make your Party be cloaked in Pass Without Trace, surprise attack the enemy for a wopping 3 Critical hits if you are using Bows And the number only increase when you are using Hand Crossbows or a extra 2 Dip into Fighter for Action Surge I would highly reccomend not use True Strike, Ensnaring Strike, and Hunters Mark tho They are all not only not optimal, but are also incredibly not fun to use for exploring the world

I adore the class fantasy of Ranger. A loner living in the wilds with their animal companion. Druids worship nature, Rangers are part of it. Problem is they kind of suck most of the time. Even outside of D&D. The equivalent in Pillars Of Eternity treated the pet like a debuff. So I usually get my fix by going Animal Domain Cleric instead, if its an option. But thanks to Larian's changes it's actually a great class in BG3 from what I've played in EA. So it's what I'll be playing. A Dragonborn Ranger Knight Beastmaster. Going into melee combat, side by side with his furry best friend.

Pillars Ranger just isn't good especially in the first game where you're locked to a ranged character. Deadfire fixes some of it but Maia is better than what the player can do with her unique subclass and pet. Pathfinder WOTR handled animal companions much better, I'd take busted op over nerfed to shit any day of the week. Anybody who's ever had a pet in their life can appreciate the class fantasy of the Ranger.
@FaolanHart
@FaolanHart 11 ай бұрын
@@CrazyxEnigma Yeah I played a Druid Ranger mixed class in Deadfire. Being able to just summon the pet again if it goes down without dealing with the giant debuff was a massive improvement. Mad Dog Barbarian in Pathfinder is my ideal class. Mixing two class fantasies that I really get into. Kingmaker & WOTR had some fantastic pet class choices. As well as some unique pets. Who doesn't want a pet raptor? lol.

I always used to think Rangers were a martial based alternative to Druids, primarily specializing in ranged combat with bows and arrows and reserved mainly for Elves and Half Elfs. But very much like a Druid they were looking to defend and preserve nature against the encroaching human civilization. They are not actively hostile towards cities and towns but were weary of their tendency to destroy the environment around them. This was before I played NWN2 as a human ranger specializing in Dual Wield melee... now I am just confused as to where they belong. These days it feels very similar to the fighter class where, besides the added bonus of an animal companion and a handful of support spells, it's lacks personality but serves as a solid basic foundation to build off of into almost any direction.

Rangers are an old standby for my friends and I. My best mate has played them almost exclusively for the nearly 30 years we've been friends. Probably my third favorite archetype in D&D and similar games. That said, I've never liked how 5E handled them. Their reliance on Hunter's Mark bugs me for reasons I can't really put my finger on, and the nerfing of Favored Enemy never sat right with me. I've heard Favored Foe from Tasha's Cauldron was an improvement, but as I went cold turkey on 5E shortly before that release I can't comment.
