This honestly seems like one of the more enjoyable takes of ranger, in standard 5E table top they have some heavily specialized features that are VERY niche. But they can be downright necessary in some campaigns that involve extended traveling across counties, countries or even full continents. Then again in a game I ran, we added the "rangers journal" which was sort of like a wizards book but for Favored enemies and Terrains. Essentially any competent ranger would keep a document of their travels and the creatures and places they've come across if they ever need to reference it later. It was a sort of mini game for our ranger to complete tasks and if he did so successfully he could swap any Favored enemy or Terrain for another one in the book. Many of them were done during his downtime and he seemed to love it, they were small quests and they varied in challenge. Spend 10 days in the arctic terrain and survive without using magic or bringing food, successfully hunt/track 10 different creatures within a grasslands. There was usually 2 or 3 that would if done successfully unlock that creature type or that terrain type for swapping. If I remember correctly he could spend 8 unbroken hours of refreshing his memory using his book to swap 1 creature type or 1 terrain type for a different one. He took his role as party guide seriously and everyone seemed to love his dedication to learning new monster and terrain lore, he also took several levels in barbarian I think for elk subclass. He really wanted that level 6 double speed long range traveling pace which basically made them in high demand from merchants or nobles, people who wanted protection and swift travel. It got to the point where it would be worth it not to teleport to places using teleportation circle, instead of taking an 8 day trip on foot, party is facing about a 2-3 day trip on horseback.

Half of his mechanics are stupidly written and thought of, the other half offer no value progression whatsoever. And that's without considering the beast master's archetype at all. I would agree if you say the ranger NOW is much better because they added so many other options and did a redux on him. But PHB Ranger is just so dumb. Like, they didn't know what to do with him. @@lovethepandainyouranger has a bunch of duds in their features, but the base class is still strong in damage. The new options in Tasha's gave them optional fetaures which are useful and good, so now they do good damage and have decent features. Meanwhile, monk deala the least damage of all martials, can't do anything unique but be okay at running away without ki, has the worst AC of all martials, the smallest hit dice and just spamming stunning strike (which is resisted most of the time, but great when it lands) is not that fun nor does it boost their poor damage output. Then they get dunked on because their AC will be worse than a wizard (who will generally start out with 17-20 AC, thanks to shield and mage armor). Monks are basically a liabilty and as a DM you need to go easy on them so they can actually have fun and feel like they're useful. No other class needs me to go easy on them just so they can be okay. I love monks, but man do they just not deliver in the game as written. 1 thing i have to disagree with you on - you said find familiar would not be much use if you go beastmaster I disagree strongly as it gives enemy’s another target (that you dont even have to use a spell a lot for) that prevents potentially the enemy from hitting the party directly - also it most of all are easy way to get adv to your attack for nothing, and the small ability they have (raven that can blind for example) can save you in an ill prepared battle - or even make an enemy use their reaction so your main party pcs wont have to

@@RenoKyrie I still think with the level 12 limit, it is not worth going past maximum lv 8 (7 for wis saves as gloom stalker) for the ASI/Feat, to make sure to get rogue and/or fighter in with sufficient levels over that spell (think you get it at lv 9 if I remember correctly?) - you could but then you only really get the best benefits from one other multiclass. You need at least 2 levels fighter for action surge, 3 for the subclass - and for rogue level 1 or level 3 where rogue subclass gives you more then fighters but fighters base traits is stronger. Never played Dnd, only divinity original sin 1 and 2, so i'm a bit lost on classes and multiclassing haha. I was looking at monk's elemental subclass and wondered what you would probably multiclass it with, maybe warlock blade pact? Other than that i would probably opt for a dual wield crit build that's not reliant on too much stealth gameplay, so probably Barbarian / fighter/ranger or rogue? And a standard magical spell slinging build that would feel similar to a pyro/earth or Water / Lightning focused build.

DnD5E Classes which BG3 are using are quite different than DoS Also, the only Crit fishing build that ever worked are 5 level into Gloom Stalker Ranger for initiative bonus and movement equal to Wisdom(And you want 14 because its not THAT mandatory to have 16 Wisdom) and 3 levels into Assassin Rogue Make your Party be cloaked in Pass Without Trace, surprise attack the enemy for a wopping 3 Critical hits if you are using Bows And the number only increase when you are using Hand Crossbows or a extra 2 Dip into Fighter for Action Surge I would highly reccomend not use True Strike, Ensnaring Strike, and Hunters Mark tho They are all not only not optimal, but are also incredibly not fun to use for exploring the world

Trying to figure out how I can make the biggest brawler I think ranger might be in the running because strength and dext proficiency would make them quite a good brawler? Good for jumping around the map, throwing things, pushing people etc. Better than barb I think, at least until barb uses rage. Rogue might be better with athletics expertise (+7 vs +5 at level 1) if you were to build a strength rogue, but restricted to light armor. There might be a spell to give bonus to strength rolls in paladin/cleric/druid/ranger? And I think going dwarf wouldn't be worth it for lower movement and height.

Ehh, Berserker Barbarian is a better brawler since you can yeet enemies to each other Also, a Ranger Stat would end up being like 12 Strength 16 Dexterity 14 Constitution 8 Inteligence 14 Wisdom 12 Charisma Now i encourage people play whatever they want, anything is viable if the end goal is for fun But there are straight up hard facts like True strike is a awful spell Smiting as a Paladin should not be something you do all the time Hunters Mark and Hex are not spells that you should allways rely on, you litteraly have other options that make your gameplay more fun than a crappy Bonus Damage

@@RenoKyrie Yeah I done that but swapped the strength with the dext because you take ranger knight which gives heavy armor. Began playing EA after Patch 4 dropped, having decided that my first playthrough would be a Beast Master Ranger with the Giant Spider Summon Companion, which was OP. My playthrough became a partial when I discovered that the Spider was no longer Giant, or, as a result, OP. That was it for the Ranger until the most recent Patch, #9. The Summon Companions were reworked, and the Spider, now the Wolf Spider, was once again OP with Entomb. By the time I began a full playthrough however, it had been nerfed again. While Entombed now only lasts 3 turns, it remains powerful. Also, Beast Tamer is now useful, as you can have both a Familiar, and a Companion. Add in Sharpshooter at full release, and the Beast Master is close to S tier. A word of caution though. NPC's don't like the Spider, including Merchants, which can be costly. As of now my first Ranger playthrough will be 5 lvls of Gloom Stalker, 4 Battle Master Fighter, 3 Assassin Rogue.

Rangers usually got 2wfighting without meeting the dex requirements and could invest more in strength. Even 2h Rangers were good, with Minsc being incredibly prominent and even being in BG3.

@javiernovoa8756 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree. Ranger is a great option thematically, but the D&D 5e has never made it viable as a support or DPS class. I like some of the changes Laurian did, I wish the actual tabletop would adopt some of these and finally make the class playable as is rather than a significant dip elsewhere. Fighter dip is good option here as well.

Ranger to me feels like a class that gains a lot in terms of gameplay feel from multiclassing, especially beastmaster + druid or in general with a nature cleric they get a lot more interesting!
@munchman1324nj Жыл бұрын
Combining your Gloomstalker with a battle Master fighter is a very good multiclass. The dread ambusher feature gives you an extra attack when you take the attack action on your very first turn. So if you go 5 lvls ranger and hit 2 lvls in fighter, you can do attack, extra attack, dread ambusher attack, action surge, repeat. Throw in a hunters mark on the biggest enemy and let em fly. Just keep in mind that it has to be your first turn, that your action surge is a once per long rest ability, and since the lvl cap is 12, you miss out on the fighter lvl 11 2nd extra attack.

I'm split between a Gloom Stalker and a Monk. Monk seems cool but it means I miss playing with cool gear.
@CrazyxEnigma Жыл бұрын
Gloom stalker and Shadow Monk wouldn't be a bad multiclass if you can't decide between them.
@Ersanven Жыл бұрын
@@CrazyxEnigma I don't think I want to mess with multiclassing on a first run. This video made me more tempted to go Monk for a more versatile character. I don't really know much about playing a stealth oriented character in these types of games.

I always used to think Rangers were a martial based alternative to Druids, primarily specializing in ranged combat with bows and arrows and reserved mainly for Elves and Half Elfs. But very much like a Druid they were looking to defend and preserve nature against the encroaching human civilization. They are not actively hostile towards cities and towns but were weary of their tendency to destroy the environment around them. This was before I played NWN2 as a human ranger specializing in Dual Wield melee... now I am just confused as to where they belong. These days it feels very similar to the fighter class where, besides the added bonus of an animal companion and a handful of support spells, it's lacks personality but serves as a solid basic foundation to build off of into almost any direction.

I found the ranger's damage to be extremely underwhelming. Once I got the 2nd attack it improved a lot, but it was nothing compared to a rogue or mage's damage output. Spending a turn to shoot a bow at a mob with 120hp only to do 4 damage is just stupid.

I don't believe there is any class or subclass feature for ranger demands ranged or dexterity. I think the need mostly comes from medium armour already needing 14 Dex and hunters make requiring conentration. RP wise it would make sense for a ranger to have decent STR for climbing and traversing the land. STR is a lot more useful on BG3 due to shoving being a bonus action and jumping being more important. The idea that rangers play at range is probably people assuming ranger means they play at range but really that comes from ranging the terrain, like going over it, traveling

I'm 100% sure my first time playing i made a Ranger beast tamer/ beast master, and when is summoned my beast the first time, my find familiar spell creature disappeared i had to replay the game as a different ranger cause only being able to summon 1 creature was some bullshit. And for me a beastmaster's animal companion shouldn't be, just a random summon, the animal should be a part of the character and customizable. In dungeon siege 2 you had to feed your animal to make it stronger, that was some good times.
Already brewing a Dark Urge Drow (Lolth) Ranger for a co-op game.

I wonder if a strength ranger knight for melee is a good idea. Basically, you go for heavy armor and high ac to prevent concentration loss and dual wield to maximize hunter's mark.

I was planning to do a Melee Ranger too. Wanted to do a Monster Hunter type Character but more like a Witcher that can move fast and silent and not a typical Warrior. :D But not sure if that's possible with the Ranger.

Although we don't know 100% for sure that was how Minsc played in the old BG games so you should be able to use him as a guinea pig to test out how good it is if you want your character to be something else.
