6:18 I don't know why, but hearing about magic and heavy magic reminds me that there is both water and heavy water on Earth. 🤔 9:36 Astarion was around for their return. I love this subject matter. I think I want a film telling the story of Karsus, humanizing him a bit (a serious film like LotR, not a jokey one like the latest D&D)... showing him trying to fight against fate, but ultimately failing.... though because of him, the world and its future was made better. He realizes all of this at the moment of his death, during an interdimensional conversation with the dying Mystryl, as they both die, but also make peace with each other. Hmmm....

@topgamer101

Couple of minor things... The Avatar spell, if I have my information correct here, was technically able to pick from different gods, and it was down to Karsus to pick which god to take the power from. As such, technically the spell could have been able to work had he picked from anyone OTHER than the goddess of magic. Now if that would have helped him or not in the crisis they all faced at that moment is up for debate, but he could have made the spell work had he picked any other god, but it failed because by picking her, it damaged the source of the weave and as such damaged magic itself which caused the whole problem in and of itself. As for the "reincarnation", while this is technically true, it's also one of the goddess' selected replacements in a mortal form that was selected to take her place. This mortal replacement, after witnessing what happened then chose to alter the rules of magic henceforth. Technically speaking it's not the same person, hence the name change and thinking being slightly different. New goddess, new way of thinking.
@WolfheartFPS
@WolfheartFPS Жыл бұрын
Interesting. I guess it makes sense though that someone from the magical Netherese Empire would want to take power from the goddess of magic. Magic was everything in that society and to have control over the weave itself is a Netherese mage's wet dream.
@jarrodbright5231
@jarrodbright5231 Жыл бұрын
Not quite right. It intention was to be able to draw magic from any god. When cast though the way the spell worked there was only one available god it could draw power from. Karsus did not intend to destroy the weave, it was just the spell wasn't able to get to the power of any of the gods who weren't directly tied to the weave.
@topgamer101
@topgamer101 Жыл бұрын
@@jarrodbright5231 So little from column A, little from column B in that situation? Yeah I could possibly see that. I certainly don't have all the facts down, but I do remember hearing somewhere that spell had the ability to draw from any of them, but was under the impression that he chose poorly rather than that being his only source. Personally I like the idea he chose poorly more, as it adds an extra degree of tragic hubris to the story. But if it's not how it's intended then it's not how it's intended.

1372 DR is also the year the Neverwinter Nights game happened! Also, Catti-Brie, one of Drizzt's companions, reincarnated as a Bedine woman of the Desai Tribe named Ruqiah by her present life parents. She fully remembers her past life as Catti-Brie, and married Drizzt, having a half-drow daughter with him, Briennelle Zaharina, who should be three or four years old during Baldur's Gate 3. Oh, and Telamont Tanthul's attempt to help Shar replace Mystra as goddess of magic is told in a novel called "The Herald" by Ed Greenwood, published in December 2014, and the story is set in 1487 DR, before the Second Sundering ended.

@@marco0445 Meh. My problem with IWD is that it is a very contrived story, and although there's some great soundtrack and some good voice acting (where it exists), it's just strictly a combat game with story as a back-backdrop. BG2, and to a lesser extent BG1 have a lot more story to offer and a lot of great dialog. Aside from a lot of the weird design decisions they made with the EE companions, there is a lot to offer and the characters presented are often very 3D characters. BG1 is a great game but is more similar to IWD in terms of combat-first gameplay. BG2 learned from the trend that was happening in RPGs at the time and added a lot more voice acting work and character development / interplay.

Small correction: Karsus's Avatar wasn't specifically designed to steal the divinity of the goddess of Magic. It was designed to collect the divinity from a god in general. "It turned out there was only one god the spell could draw the divine power from: the only one Karsus absolutely should not have drawn the power from, Mystryll the goddess of Magic". (I think I quoted it correctly - it's from memory) Second small correction: Mystra's Ban prevented the use of any spells above the 9th level, not 10th level (I'm sure that one was an honest typo?) It also appears that Mystra's Ban has been undone during the events of the Spellplague. It sure is a good thing there's no surviving Nethrese archmages still accessing the weave who might try something at some point... (nervous chuckle) Netheril is one of my favorite Realms topics and honestly this video could go for hours if it went into everything it could have covered... then another series of videos on the noteworthy "survivors" of Netheril. I think you did pretty well to keep this concise. And yes if an apparently teenage girl named "Tabra" turns up in BG3, possibly hanging out at some remote inn, I will literally squeal in delight.

Since I first saw and played EA, I've had my mind set on Gale as the origin character I'll play in my first playthrough, so learning a bit about the Netherese is actually extremely helpful. I have a tendency to want to min/max my playthroughs in RPGs, which just seems foolish in a game like BG3. So I've decided the best way to play is to roleplay the character, and Gale is especially interesting in that he seems to mirror Karsus in more ways than just his folly. Curiosity is what drives wizards and makes them who they are, and so often that curiosity leads to their ruin. Gale seems like a pretty damn nice guy though, and having made mistakes akin to those of Karsus, would probably try to temper his curiosity and hunger for power such that it didn't bring harm to others. And yet, Gale's current dilemma pushes him to actively seek out, achieve and consume that power, so that he doesn't explode and eviscerate a whole lot more people - in much the same way that Karsus wanted to use his power to elevate his people and defeat the Phaerimm. It's such a cool clash of ideals, so I'm going to play Gale as someone who's morality and curiosity are in a constant conflict with each other. Edit: Thanks for the video! :D

Karsus's soul is bound to the material plane, thus he can become a warlock patron We CAN actually cast spells above 10th level.... theoretically.... Huge Rituals, that demand huge sacrifices and tens if not hudred of master level magic users are technically able to do so. I think Mystra allows it, 1. because its impossible, its impossible to see even 3-6 master level magic users in one place.. And if this were to commence, it would probably mean that something like this would really be needed. Since this ritual has really huge sacrifices, not just in bodies, but on those masters and if it goes wrong, its consequences are huge and wild.

I saw several videos about Karsus Folly and for some reason nobody speaks of Neverwinter Nights 2, which had the King of Shadows who was also a result of Weave not existing for a moment. Used to be the Guardian who was created throught extremely torcherous process. And when the Weave was gone he turned to Shadow Weave to survive. And after that the empire that created him got scared and attacked him. Didn't go well for them. By the way, it's also connected to githyanki since one of their precious silver swords (The Gith Sword if I remember correctly) was used and shattered in a fight against the King of Shadows later. It's not super connected to the story of Baldur's Gate, but still it's an interesting bit of history and I think it's a pity nobody mentions that.

Unless I'm mistaken (and I did just do a quick check to make sure I wasn't remembering incorrectly) Karsus is not available as a Great Old One pact, but you can select him for an Ancient Archmage pact. This is not an official 5E subclass but one a lot of DMs allow. There are also some homebrew subclasses for Warlocks making a pact with Karsus When he died, Karsus's spirit was not claimed by any god and was refused entry to the Fugue Plain (it seemed he rather annoyed every god out there). His soul was instead bound to the Prime Material Plane where it can be contacted though a ritual by those who wish to make a pact with him to draw on his power. He is not in the Far Realms.

These spells were extremely powerful but also very difficult and time consuming to cast. They also had to be custom created (or learned through risking one's sanity by reading the Nether Scrolls). Think of it as a DM approving random homebrew spells from level 20 players but making them so hard to cast it was a whole adventure campaign to be able to do so. In gaming terms, these were a thing in AD&D 2E. Back to the lore, until Karsus's Folly was cast it was thought that 11th level spells were the highest possible. Theory is there are also 13th level spells possible. I've also been (somewhat reliably) informed that at the end of the Spellplague Mystra's Ban was removed and so the restrictions on higher level spells with it. I haven't seen official WotC or unofficial Ed Greenwood confirmation on that though.
