Fun little lore tidbit tangentially related to Mystra and the magic of the Realms: besides magic, her portfolio includes time! Not time as calendars and clocks (that's Amaunator's job), but raw temporal energy and the timestream. If you want to time travel in the Realms, you can do it only with her approval and with her spell, the Time Conduit.

This is not lore, but I have some compatible "homebrew" explanations I use to in universe explain class specific spellcasting as well as the the general concept of spell slots and spell levels. Spell levels are Gates. One big outer gate, the 9th Gate of Magic, and 8 lesser gates inside it nested like a babushka doll, all of them circular. One must open these gates to access the weave. Since lesser gates are nested inside larger gates, opening for example the 3rd Gate simultaneously allows magic belonging to the 2nd and 1st Gate to also pass through, perhaps even to greater effect. These gates are opened with so called Mana Keys (spell slots). You power as a spellcaster determines what keys to access to (the level of your spell slot) as well as how many charges each key has (number of spell slots of a given level). Different classes have different ways of using their keys. Wisdom based divine and primal spellcasting have the gates open through their intuitive connection to the divine/primal. It is a deity, nature itself or another cosmic force that opens the gates through an intuiteve connection between itself and the wisdom based spellcaster. The mana keys of paladins and sorcerers more or less force open the gates through inner will whether it be through conviction in their oath or magical blood enforcing its will on reality. Wizards, artificers and arcane tricksters do not have keys, per se. They have simply studied a form of lockpicking. Bards are also lockpicks in the sense that their mana keys are like tuning forks that resonate in to place through the magic of creativity. Warlocks are a bit different. They are bestowed a mark by their patron which allows them to somewhat pass for a sorcerer. If their patron is a fiend then the warlock can pass for having fiendish blood and the innate magic that often comes with it. The warlock thus nudges their keys in to place by practically deceiving the Gates of Magic.

A few points of elaboration / minor correction. Mystra 1.0 did not attempt to get an audience with Ao just to reclaim her place as Goddess of Magic (and stabilize the weave that had gone out of control); it was also to inform Ao of the plot between Bhaal, Bane and Myrkul to steal the Tablets of Fate after Midnight, Kelemvor and Cyric had helped her uncover the plot . Helm refused her entry because she did not have both of the Tablets of Fate to return to Ao (events covered in the novel Tantras). When Midnight became the Goddess of Magic she retained her own personality only temporarily. Over time the position of the Goddess of Magic overwhelmed her personality and she found herself truly becoming Mystra rather than Midnight. This was paired with Kelemvor finding the same with his position as God of the Dead and this led to the end of their relationship. The observation from Oghma was that Midnight was truly becoming Mystra. (events covered in the novel The Prince of Lies). By the time she was struck down by Cyric (who also ceased to be his former self after drinking his own Kool Aid by reading the Cyrinishad) she was no longer Midnight at all.

I wonder if Gale is so desperate for Mystra’s favour because his powers as an arch-wizard, before being greatly reduced, were thanks in part to being a chosen of Mystra. Did he said he’s not as powerful as he once was as a punishment from her, so does that mean his status as Chosen has been revoked? It would be in line with her inclinations if selecting lovers and trysts from among her Chosen as well.

There have been quite a few references in the books dealing with Mystra as a main character to the weave always repairing itself when damaged "and the Goddess of the weave likewise" (direct quote from Oghma to Mystra). There was a strong indication in a few of the Mystra/Cyric books that there can never not be a god or goddess of magic as the weave will protect said deity from death, hence the theory that Mystra 2.0 "let" Cyric kill her with Godslayer when his previous attempts to do exactly that failed. It also appeared that there was no "way out" for the deity of magic - indeed Midnight stopped being Midnight and became Mystra over time as she lost her sense of her old self and became the Goddess of Magic.

The Avatar book series that depicts the rise and fall of Mystra, Midnight, Kelemvor and Cyric is by far my most favourite lore in all of the Forgotten Realms. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the the powers and Pantheon of the Gods of Faerun. That being said: Shar rules. Always has, always will.

Technically yes, but part of the Goddess of Magic's portfolio involves letting the Gods give magic to their followers so they fulfill their portfolios. Mystra tries to push the point on this in The Crucible when Mystra cut Cyric's worshipers off from the weave. Oghma talked Mystra down from this position shortly before Helm threatened to exile her from the outer planes for not allowing Cyric's followers to access the weave and threatening the balance and starting a godswar. Note that the gods themselves can access the raw magic of the outer planes instead of using the weave. Cyric was a slow learner on this but he ended up accessing the raw chaotic magic from the plane of Pandemonium when Mystra cut him off from the weave.

Interesting point on that... The "veils" said party member refers to as being worn by Mystra was typical of the appearance of the original Mystra not Midnight-Mystra. Unless Larian didn't differentiate between the two (very highly possible) that would indicate said person is quite a bit older than he seems... as in over a hundred years older.

The Gale situation is interesting because the Mystra he describes is ,pre;ole the pre Time of Troubles Mystra not the Midnight-becoming-Mystra version. Now Larian most likely ignored that they were different individuals (particularly since Midnight's sense of self did get absorbed by the role of Goddess of Magic over time) but it could also be an indication that Gale's is quite a bit older than he seems

Complicated position. Technically there are at least 3 Goddesses of Magic (Mystryl, Mystra and Midnght who became Mystra) but as Midnight-Mystra confides to Elminster there is truly only one Goddess of Magic and Midnight felt herself becoming Mystra and losing her true self. Elminster indicated that he knew this all along but that Midnight changed who Mystra was in turn.

Yes, each and every spell in Forgotten Realms had to be invented at some point in time. The old book Netheril: Empire of Magic even has a timeline for most common arcane spells. If your DM allows it, your arcane spellcaster could invent their own!
