@@Solaris2000APB I wouldn't say it's got horrible mechanics. I love DOS2. But the stat scaling on item levels through thousands and tens of thousands when loot is limited doesn't sit well with me (though modding community solves this problem). BG3 loot on the other hand is enchantment based and if you take a liking to an item like the Guidance cantrip necklace, it's more than ok to keep it on hand. @@mix1ro I have it on both PC and the physical limited run edition on Switch. I play it on PC at 4K maxed out locked 144 FPS and the game looks incredible. While it’s amazing it’s even able to run on Switch at all and it’s still very fun and enjoyable. Out of my 100% playtime I’d say it’s 80% PC 20% Switch and everything I said is true the game is still great and fun on Switch. The difference between the two versions is HUGE. Like I’m talking HUGEeee. The graphics are FAR worse. The lower 30 fps that even dips into the 20s sometimes is mostly fine due to the style of game it is. The controls on Switch are also pretty solid but no you can’t use touch screen in game which is a damn shame. I love this game one of my favorite games ever. I’m not home a lot so I play it on Switch when I can’t be on my PC. That’s what the Switch version is great for imo. Steam cross save compatibility let’s you use the same save across both platforms. A couple of things, Ievel cap right now is L4, L5 is where things really start to get interesting for classes. Marshal classes: Fighters can get some decent skills, if Battlemaster gets more skills it will be really fun, not to mention monks! and barbarians aren't in the game yet. There are a lot of spells and skills to go still, hopefully Larian will try to get them all in (at least the ones that are reasonable for a video game).

Well, not really level 5, rather Levels 6 and 7. Level 5 only gives fighters Extra Attack. Paladins and Rangers get extra spell slots as well. But spellcasters... OOOOh BOI! That's a Feast for them! Fireball, Lightning bolt, Call Lightning, Haste, Slow, Mass Healing Word, Counterspell, Fly, Gaseous Form, Animate Dead, Beacon of Hope, Melfs Minute Meteors, Sleet Storm, Bestow Curse, Remove Curse, Speak with Dead, Water Walk, Water Breathing, Tidal Wave, Thunder Step, Spirit Guardians, Stinking Cloud and MORE. There is SO MANY amazing spells at level 5! Like seriously, this is THE level where Wizard stops being a nerd with stick and becomes Death, Destroyer of Worlds! I'm serious, during our play in Tomb of Annihilation, I've prevented entire encounter against army of undead by unleashing single fireball at them. This was so satisfying! Though no need to be upset - Extra Attack is also surprisingly effective way to deal damage.

They have both their share of problems and strong points. The DOS systems is fairly half-assed in general, but there are ideas worth treasuring in the mix. The real issue with D&D is that the levels from 1 to 4 currently included in the Early Access are notoriously the range where the system is at its dullest. A lot of classes barely start to "come online" and differentiate enough from level 5 going up.

As mentioned Armors follows the 5'th ed rulset. And is one of the areas you potetially can "Mess up your character" from the start if you want to min/max. If so you might want to plan a bit ahead a bit when creating your character. As an example If you got a character that is or will be proficient with medium Armor, chances are you want to set the characters Dexterity to 14 (=+2 Armor Class (AC)). As Medium armor suports a maximum of +2 AC from dex modifier. (Or if your adventurus you can ignore it and go for a more stealth/ranged typed build an go over the "soft cap".) On the other hand light or no armor have no dexterity modifier limitations, so Playing a dexteity based character can potetially get decent AC aswell. Or you can wear Heavy armor witch have a high AC but will get no additional AC from dexteity. Magic +1 (AC) Armors does exist, aswell as "rare" Armors enchanted with various effects. Shields will also increase AC by 2, but as a general rule make sure your character is proficient with anything you equip or major penalties will apply,

DOS 2 is one of my favorite games...character development, magic system, combat. Enemies were varied enough so that certain tactics weren't always winners. I had a blast finding different skill synergies. You could lose a fight 10 times in a row and then try and different approach and beat the enemy almost effortlessly. I built a rogue that specialized in Scoundrel and Air but as the game progressed he got into Necromancy and Hydromancy. Really felt like he was evolving, plus the mirrors allowed you to respec your team to constantly tweak their abilities. I wished Larian piled on more expansions, I was actually sad when I reached the end phase of the game.

@@ray8221-y4r That's the thing about D&D. It's less of a game, And more of a platform for storytelling. It's always been that way. This why the combat is quite.... Awful. This is why in a Video Game setting it suffers heavily. A lot of the mechanics and rules of D&D makes more sense if you view it as a storytelling platform instead of a game. Take the D20 System, All the rolls for the skill checks, Saving throws, Etc. All that RNG Serves to make the story dynamic. In a video game it doesn't have any reason to be there aside from being.... D&D? Let me paint you a scenario. The king of the realm is old, His only heir is his daughter, And his daughter has been kidnapped by goblins! So you travel to the Goblin Fortress to rescue the princess. The king has explicitly stated this is a stealth mission. In a video game if you fail the skill check, There may be more goblins to fight, Or the Princess is killed by the goblins, Aside from that there won't be much consequences either way. Maybe the loss of the reward if the princess dies. In the tabletop RPG you fail the stealth check, The story can take a nigh infinite number of turns as a result of that. For example, The Princess dies , As a result of this the king's is overcome by stress, and grief, He dies a week later after hearing the news. The kingdom has gone to ruin, Dukes & Counts are warring over the remaining pieces of the kingdom. Or Maybe, Instead of that, The king's loyalists keep his death a secret, But time is ticking, They call upon the party to assist them in finding the long lost bastard of the king. Forcing the party into a investigation that the very realm's safety is dependant on. Or maybe.... You get the Idea. RNG should only be in a game if it serves a purpose, If it doesn't, What's the point? I'm not saying D&D is bad, D&D is great! Just not.... As a video game. I was hoping they build a new system from the ground up for a Video Game, Using D&D Lore. Instead they just crammed the tabletop system from one medium, To another. Trying to cram a cube into a round hole. It just doesn't work. BG3 is peak mediocrity in almost every aspect.

As someone who owns both games but hadn’t played with either series before dos2 or bg3 I’d say this is a pretty good summary of both of them. One point I’d like to add though is that, for me personally dos2 felt a lot easier to pick up and learn as I went along. Bg3 is much more complex of a game and it’s systems are much more involved than dos2 felt at any point to me. Loving bg3 so far in early access but not gonna lie, I’m still struggling with understanding all of its various rules and systems.

Hmm maybe a day and night system that forces you to long rest or something idk

I was reluctant to try DOS 2 at first after seeing the character customization screen which was overwhelming for me and during first playthrough I learnt about the different classes and how those compliment each other. I implemented whatever I learnt in my subsequent playthrough and then game was so much fun. I haven't experienced the story telling and dialogue options in any other game. I do like the development and how i can interact with the world, the party stuff not so much. I'd rather mix spells and make combos or whatever alone than having at least two characters. I like that my character be one instead having a party as my character. So having the ability that one character can do it all is more appealing to me. Found this video from the other side of the equation :) I got DOS2 on sale last weekend, coming from BG3. Here are my first impressions. (For the record, I'm not a crpg "expert" but I'm certainly a veteran of the genre.) DOS2 is a "classic," old school crpg and a pretty complex one. BG3 now feels like the dumbed down version of DOS2 to me. A more positive way of saying that is that BG3 is more accessible -- and that's a good thing. But the complexity of DOS2 will be a turn off for a lot of people and the simpler mechanics of BG3 might turn off hardcore rpg players. BG3 kicks everyone and everything's bum on cinematic grandeur and immersivity as well as, of course, choices. On that level, I adore BG3 and in many ways enjoy the *experience* of playing it much more than DOS2 so far. And there's the main difference. Both are very much in the crpg genre, but they deliver different experiences. DOS2 seems to be a deep dive into "classic" crpgs, with deep mechanics and gameplay. BG3 is a deep dive into cinematic grandeur and immense immersivity. The graphics and the cut scene art are very old school in DOS2; this might be a turn off for people expecting the cinematic experience which BG3 delivers. Both are amazing at what they do, but they *are* different.

May be it would be useful to make a video for the players who dislike DoS-2, but like the whole (A)D&D RPG corpus that evolved in more than 20 years starting from the legendary Baldur's Gate. Is there something in this reface of DoS-2 for those players? Or is it better to continue to wait for the release of Wrath of the Righteous (and may be play the beta version)?

I think it's pretty clear that the Pathfinder games are the real heir to the Baldur's Gate legacy. Making Divinity 3, slapping a Neverwinter Nights skin on it, and calling it Baldur's Gate just reeks of cynical, emotionally manipulative marketing. Perhaps they just don't have faith in their Divinity IP, which to be fair is the weakest aspect of DOS2, and see a big established name like Baldur's Gate as the best way to elevate their work moving forward. I'm not convinced that being so blatantly indifferent to the original Baldur's Gate series in their design decisions will accomplish that.

Both games combined wouldn't be perfect either imo. As much as I love the DoS "modern" franchise and the current content of BG3 they have major flows in my opinion. The way you navigate the world still feels quite clunky compared to many games, the UI is still to this day really underwhelming by moments (even though it's getting better and better in BG3, I particularly like the Character sheet UI now, but the inventory and hotbars in combat in particular are still pretty bad). It also feels like BG3 is going for a much bigger scope and budget than DoS2 did, if you compare both Early Access / first act the content in BG3 feels like there will have a lot more things to do in the end. Companions are handled better than before too. I never liked companion quests in DoS2 they felt really forced into each act (especially the third act, it never made sense to me) whereas BG3 so far companions are interesting and you genuinely want to decipher them and see where it will lead.

This will be the period where we see a lot of buyers remorse in whatever media outlet we consume for the feedback of BG3. Larian will probably fail to address all the noteworthy bugs of the game right away and might change the files to increase performance and smoothness. Perhaps 3 months after the release the game will be smooth, but there will be a little bit of a piece missing, which is where modders come in. I think 5 months is what will be necessary to get a collection of various mods that will make the game feel more personal and easy to invest in for the player. Aside for the obvious ramp-up in visuals and production value, "No shitty randomized loot" is arguably the single biggest improvement of BG3 over DOS 2. When it comes to the rest of the core game mechanics, it tends to be more a matter of taste which one you prefer. Because BG1 and BG2 aren't of the same genre. BG3 is a turn based RPG. BG1 and 2 are real time RPGs. This is a MAJOR change between the games, which is why they could never be compared to it. That system change alone separates it entirely from the rest of the BG series. Then there's the fact that BG3 has Dragon Age dialogue. Up close and more personal. But it does (or will) have the same exact party system of BG1 and 2 which apparently everyone forgot about. In BG1 and 2, if your whole party was LG but you were CE and started killing everyone you meet, your LG party will literally leave. And if you don't do something fast enough for your party member's, they'll get pissed and also leave. BG3 is going to have this exact system, which will react the exact same too. But no one seems to even remember BG1 or 2 lmao A game that's more like BG1 and 2 is actually Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2. And they aren't in the D&D world either, but their systems are also the exact same as BG1 and 2, and are real time too. It is a bit weird, but honestly I don't see an issue with Larian changing the game up

Ok so I've played both and my awnser is 100% baldurs gate 3 even in it's unfinished early access. The thing is I have tryed several times to get into dos2 and I just can't like it. It's not bad I just really don't like how samey all the character builds are and I also am not a fan of the ap point system. However baldurs gate is able to fix all of my problems with dos2 by using the dnd5e mechanics. So it managed to keep the things I liked about dos2 and fix the things I didn't like about it. Overall baldurs gate 3 is looking to be one of the best RPGs ever made and in my opinion is infinitely better dos2. With more build options, better combat, and more interaction.

Sounds like BG3 is gonna be quite awesome! Simple classes, spells, no random loot and trillions of talents and other options. Let's hope that the story is gonna be engaging, as that's the main factor for many people.

one of the things I didn't like as much in DOS2 is that, especially on tactician, combat is over really really quickly. You set up and execute one, maybe 2 big combos and everyone is dead. It also meant that if you didnt kill or stun a character in the first or second turn you got (again, ESPECIALLY on tactician), you were pretty much boned.

That I agree with and I don't at same time. I agree with it because when I first played it that is exactly how I felt, but then I don't agree because as I played again I realized that there is reasons you have to use environments, elements, sneaking, and character placements and items to your advantage. The game is hard because most of us don't use these things as much as supposed to. It's truly much more of a puzzle and strategy game, however you do have different ways to win and most of us went for the keeping enemies stunned or unable to move/ take turn strat. However once you use the things I mentioned above as part of your main tactics it gets much much more fun , and more battles feel satisfying to win.

Your comparison of the gameplay is well done, but I think it's incredibly short-sighted to scrutinise the minutiae of the gameplay for 10 minutes and not talk at all about the story, tone or "spirit" of these games. Dammit, is this a RPG we're talking about? Is this Baldur's Gate 3? Why not talk about these things? "Is the universe immersive and believable (which was a massive flaw for DO.S2)?" "How interesting is the main plot and the other quests?" "How memorable are the NPCs?" These are the questions I would've liked to see answered.

@@Grrymjo I’ve played hundreds of hours of dos 2 and a hundred hours of bg3. BG3 is only similar in the engine department, how you move around and interact with things but this would be true in comparison to most cRPGs. Combat wise vastly different. Story wise vastly different. Graphically similar. One has and is going to have a lot more high quality cutscenes and very immersive dialogue the other not so much. Both fantastic but calling BG3 DoS3 is just incorrect in a hundred ways. Baldurs gate doesn’t need to be RTwP, real dnd is turn based so in all honesty this has the potential to be a better dnd game then bg1 or 2 where.

I've been very disappointed so far by BG3 even though I am a huge fan of both DOS2 and BG2. The bugs and lack of polish are fine since its still in development, but the game is an mash of DOS2 combat ruined by trying to shove it into D&D rules and BG2's characterization and story ruined by trying to shove it into DOS2's aesthetic.

I would have to say I agreed with this at launch of EA of BG3. I thought it was good still but DOS2 blew it away. I just replayed it with the latest patch 6 which came out early October with about 50 hours playtime now doing everything and wow it got so much better. I would still say I prefer DOS2 slightly overall but thats kind of unfair as I know the full arc of the games story, combat, and characters. As of ACT 1 I think BG3 is just as strong as DOS2 and the characters are actually so much more investing due to the camera change and animated cutscenes. So much more detail too. I can't wait for full release.

Yeah Divinity was great. I did however, feel like the environmental effects were rather extreme in both effectiveness, and prevalence. Baldur's Gate 3 feels pretty good without everything exploding around you, and you dont have to constantly fight for advantageous terrain that isn't cursed or on fire lol. As for not having as much power to use like you did in DoS2...You start at level 1 and go through DnD progression. in DoS2, you quickly become somewhere around level 10 in terms of pwoer, and end the game as a demi-god or a chosen. BG3 you're capped at level 4. lol

Baldurs gate 3 is supposed to be a DND campaign, very hard and fast, while DOS2 is a gamified and several generations removed inspired by DND. I think source limits and the action point aspect show it best with how focused on limiting the player they are. If it’s as I understand every turn you can use whatever resource you think is best and strategize more on a team level than as solo characters. I’m excited for dnd the video game in 6 years
@PaulRGauthier

The entire computer rpg genre is derived from D&D. However, I have to think DOS2 took a lot of inspiration from other tabletop games and even strategy games. For example, it's a skill-based system not a class-based system -- which split is one of the major dividing lines in tabletop design. The action point system is also markedly Not D&D (tm).

Complete bollocks. The race alone makes a huge difference in trapping yourself in BG3. Roll a Tiefling druid vs. a Wood Elf and get back to me. Lose immunity to charm/sleep, 3m less movement, 2 DEX less, 1 wisdom less for a couple of more charisma that's useless on the class, a highly situational resistance to fire damage. Then there's the passives. If you play a wizard/warlock and don't choose medium armor proficiency, you just gimped yourself of a potential 3-4 AC and 2 extra initiative for turn priority. If you don't choose misty step on either, another massive gimping of yourself in combat performance. No Darkvision race? Have fun in the Underdark landing any ability, Dancing Lights requires concentration, so if you're looking to land abilities by relying on it, you can't even use other spells that require concentration.

@@kirkvanallen5202 Plus story choices also royally screw you.
