@@kanishcktewatia597 at the end of the day it’s an RPG so being able to role play as a pacifist or at least someone that probably engages in only critical fights seems like a good choice to have. To make that choice blatantly bad to play in terms of rewards seems kinda silly. I think rewarding the player with around the same exp for talking your way out of a situation or even more at times seems like a good idea.

This game is a tour de force of game design. It planted itself firmly on the pantheon of cRPGs as one of the greatest. An instant classic. Few aspects are somewhat flawed, but then nothing is perfect. However, in every part that really matters this is nothing short of a true masterpiece. You are right emphasizing the fact that they thought of almost anything a player could do in any situation. It actually caught me off guard so many times. In other games you'd expect it to be what some people refer as emergent gameplay. Or playing out of the box, not the way it was intended. In this game - it's ready for your worst(best). Every god damn time. The amount of work that went into just scripting, and designing encounters, level layouts, layers and layers of...stuff. Secrets. Somebody's job was actually just constantly trying to think about every way a player may resolve each situation, of which the game has hundreds and hundreds. Then there's writing. Which is so tight. A lot of cRPGs are very verbose, drowning you in massive paragraphs of text in each dialogue. DOS2 manages to say as much with way fewer words, while also giving tons of flavor to the world and characters. And obviously totally bonkers creativity of the world is a signature Larian touch. There are so many delightfully absurd situations you will get yourself into, it has a whiff of Pratchett's writing to it. It looks amazing, and that soundtrack is absolutely divine. I have tracks from it stuck in my head for days at times. Ah, I could go on forever. To me personally it's a 10/10 game. Tiny annoyances I had were just dwarfed by the amount of quality time I had with this game. It's a great laugh, it's a tactical challenge, it's a good story, memorable characters, a true adventure. What a legendary game.

Just to add something to your point on 'doing everything'; for me the big issue with the game is how tight the XP is. I feel that in order to keep up with the recommended level you need to really do 95% of the content, and this leads to either hoovering each map for hours looking for the last few enemies, checking a walkthrough for missed quests or finding exploity ways to make up the ground - Hence why players are often killing NPCs or judging decisions on XP rewards more than roleplay. During my current playthrough I had a fun chilled out run through Act 1, and found a new way to escape Fort Joy, but wasn't able to quite hit level 8 before getting off the island. I ended up fast travelling back into town to escape the Fort again through a different route, then circling back around and killing all the magisters on the upper levels just so I could keep up with XP. It defeated the point of multiple unique routes that the opening act is so famous for that I needed to double back and do the alternate paths just to be the right level for the next zone. It would have been great to see the game provide just another 10-20% XP either through a bit more content or just more generous quest rewards. It would give more freedom and flexibility to explore an area and then move on when you feel you have seen enough, and perhaps leave some of the secrets uncovered for another playthrough.

@@maxmustermann-zx9yq I've only finished the game once on normal (and never needed to do any deep research), so i'm no expert on the subject. That said, with over 100 hours of playtime, what I've noticed is that the stat scaling is ridiculously high, making battling multiple enemies two or three levels above you often brutally difficult if you don't have a good build or system-specific knowledge that you can use to even the difference. Many times, with just this small difference in levels, you are almost forced to change most of your equipment because it becomes too weak. And since progress is pretty ungenerous with experience, whether you like it or not, you're strongly encouraged to do whatever you can. It's not hard to imagine a stage in the game where you might be so underdeveloped that it becomes impossible to continue playing. The second act, for example, has a monstrous amount of content that doesn't need to be done to complete it. It can be finished very quickly, but if you do that, once you start act three, the first enemy you encounter will be so many levels above you that it will probably be able to eliminate your party on its own.

@@Dmndota mmh, I think RPGs really need to take a hint from the Left for Dead Director AI to create some sort of Dungeon Master AI level scaling enemies is only one part of it, loot should fit too and quests should ideally not be piled on until the player either has some downtime or maybe they should work downtime in the main quest in some way (like "hey we need some time to do this/money to buy this/relationship with that faction/.... so see what you can do, maybe take some contracts")

I bought this game for the Switch last year on a whim, and it has hands down been one of my favorite RPGs of all time! I haven't beat it yet, the Final Act has so many brutal battles that I am taking my time. I love the story the many many ways to approach battles and especially all the crazy abilities you can pull off. If i had one complaint of this game (as a first time player) it is that you basically have to do every battle possible to be a high enough level to complete the Act, especially Act 2. Again this is coming from a first time player who hasn't researched broken builds or min maxed my XP. Still though beating a tough battle after many tries is euphoric, and makes all the effort totally worth it!

I just found this review! I had actually picked up this game not much after this review was released, I played the For Honour mode for my first playthrough as I enjoy the challenge and it required me to learn a lot about the game before feeling comfortable about moving to the next act. I feel like you hit a lot of strong points in your review and especially related to the meta-gaming issue with killing all the people with no consequences. Yeah, I ended the game with like 1.5 million gold and also had 100's of kg of crafting materials (which I always had gear-fear), but it was an incredible game and was really rewarding to figure everything out. I will admit that Act II I think is the hardest section of the game for playing the For Honour mode, which was kind of disappointed as it made the later acts, but especially Act III feel trivial.

The gift bag inventory "fix" is awful. I like the idea of specialized bags for different categories of items, but they went way too specific; there are so many bags that it's just as cluttered as without them. I want like one bag for all my spare gear, possibly one for weapons and one for armor. Not one for axes and one for maces and one for swords and one for helmets and one for boots and ...

The inventory system is absolutely a mess and the gift bag "fix" for it is even worse. You bring up a great point about murdering everybody in town because I've absolutely done that as it is nothing but beneficial to do so, same with cheesing dialogue to steal from NPC's. Also, summoning is just straight up broken, holy shit. Great review!

The only thing I'd add (and that is just my personal preference) is that the pre-made characters are so much more interesting and give you so many more options, you are kinda pressured into playing them instead of an original character. Nice video man ! Personally my favorite CRPG too ^^ What I dislike the most however is the armor system, because it gets exponentially crazy as the levels goes by and if you don't have a team specialized in physical damage, or magic damage, you're just going to drag the fights and crippled yourself even more (reference to the summoning part of your video). Thus, it just kills diversity in your party and although I love this game to death, this has been really bothering me. I've tried the Divine war mod but it just doesn't cut it for me I guess. In that regard, I feel that DOS 1 was better handling the armor system.

That's not true. I beat Honour Mode in a blind run with 2 physical and 2 magical. Although fights did dragged on forever, I felt it was mostly because of Defense spec and gear. And I didn't use "pre battle setup cheeses" which I found out about later. Just lots of research on mechanics of the game and item databases...which was like half the game! :P

It would be nice if some1 creates a mod to extend the game past divinity. For example after u become divine u could head inside the void and battle the voidwoken and the black king in their home territory > i think that would be fun and maybe some abilities that would represent your Godhood

There should never be a consequence to initiate a conversation with one character, then teleport all the NPCs that annoy the eff out of you because they initiate dialogue loops. I can only hear "how ya holdin up brie" and "if I'm not visitinc ya, who will?" so many times before i want to shut the game off. Those NPCs will get murdered every time.... Usually discreetly as possible. It's the first thing I do upon entering a town hub as soon as I get some sort of teleport ability. Side note though... Do you ever find out what happened to Brie or is there more backstory on Thun? It's like Belegar from DoS1. My wife and I are obsessed with DoS1/2. I've 100%ed them both and I am not an achievement hunter by any means. P. S. Fane blood mage lone wolf = the cheese to end all cheesing. Summoning kinda balances out toward the end game.

I agree with many points, but I also want to add if there is a D:OS3 I hope they do something a little different with the armour system. It's better than the first game's combat system in my opinion, however, its tedious to balance a physical/magic damage party unless you have good knowledge of fights beforehand. A pure physical team can be very diverse in party composition, but a pure magic team runs into the problem of fighting over the same gear. Archers and Summoners are the best at dealing both damage types, with Necromancers just tailing behind. I wish more magic damaging skills scaled with strength to help balance party composition. To sum things up, I hope for a slight change in the current armour system or a more diverse pool of skills that deal physical/magic damage.

I started playing in classic with my 2 friends and yea, it was hard and we had to restart basically every fight like 5 times, however it was so fun to figure out the best usage of AP and the best way to beat each fight.

I have up to 70h of DO2 and I came to your review trying to find a reason to come back to the game since I wasn't having a good time with it. Beyond it's pros and cons, what annoyed me most was the main story tone in general and the pacing. I dont mind the slow combat, I actually enjoy it. The tone is a bit silly and the voice action doesn't help. The companions has interesting plots although, to the point I wish I knew before creating my character. I could easily play with Lohse, just to give an example. I really enjoy your reviews but I dont know if I can go back to DOS2. Maybe I'll give a second chance after hearing what you said here. Cheers!

I used to be overwhelmed with the inventory and would just sell everything and never craft but now I'm used to it. I love the slow combat. Don't know why but I find every battle interesting except for first 3/4s of act 1

That's interesting, it's the exact opposite to me. I was VERY immersed in the begining while trying to escape fort Joy and after that also, until Act 2. After Act 1 i felt like i had enough. I was 125 hours in at the time. I def' need to get back to it one day. But there are too many great cRPGs, i just can't play them all, sadly.

The part where you were talking about when you miss something, from a previous Act and how annoying that is made me laugh in a really ironic way. I'm actually having to delete right now 10 hours of gameplay because I forgot to complete my main character personal quest, and I'm dead inside :/

RPG/Open-World games have been my favorite genre. Thanks to Divinity Original Sin, I was introduced to CRPG and fell head over heels in love with it. DOS was great & DOS 2 improved upon the solid base set by its predecessor. Now tying my comment to this video - great video. I do agree with the points that you have made especially the criticism regarding not having consequences about killing civilians or merchants when you are close to finishing the act. This seems like an exploit/weak game design to me. I haven't played any games that I can think of where the entire team takes their turn, but I do enjoy this individual turn-based combat which makes things interesting - adds rng, make the combat more strategic and intuitive.

I'm actually finishing Act 2 at Reapers Coast. Cons: Story: so far is kind of "mee" I really dont care about any NPC or companions at all. Inventory management: 100% agree on you. Also i would add buying stuff to sellers is annoying hovering over every book to see the spell it unlocks. Pros: Technical: My crappy 2018's laptop still run this game quite smoothie and visually is stunning... Combat: AI is challenging, some situations are kind of unfair or repetitive, but this is what most keeps me into this game right now.

This is my first CRPG outside of Wasteland 2. I absolutely love this game. It’s one of my favorite games of all time now. As someone new to CRPGs and D&D style games what do you recommend I try next? So far I have purchased Wasteland 3, Pillars of Eternity 1 Ultimate Edition, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Ultimate Edition, Tyranny Ultimate Edition, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Pathfinder: Kingmaker Imperial Bundle, Baulders Gate 3 Early Access, Disco Elysium, Divinity Original Sin 1 Enhanced Edition, and Shadowrun: Dragonfall Directors Cut. I’m just at the start of Act 2 on Divinity Original Sin 2 and omg these style of games is what I been looking for my whole life apparently. What would be the next one for a noobie out of the ones I purchased already would you recommend?

@@MortismalGaming ok thanks again. I was looking at them both and was thinking I might skip the first one and start straight with Deadfire since it’s newer. I noticed Deadfire has a turn based mode or active with pause. I’ve never played an active with pause before seeing as Wasteland 2 and Divinity 2 are the only ones I’ve played so far so I guess I’ll try it since it can’t be changed later on after you choose.

I'd recommend pathfinder over pillars personally as I found it much more engaging from the start. Also divinity 1 felt just as fun to me as 2 and even had some mechanics I wish were in 2. Divinity 1 probably takes itself even less seriously than 2 but it's in a fun way, sorta like fable 2.

For a guy who generally hates turn-based combat, I would say that combat in DOS2 is my favourite of all time. I'm currently on my way on beating it true solo on Tactician as close to 100% as I can get by going in blind as it's my first playthrough, and for me it just hits the right amount of having to optimize your strategy without ever forcing you to exploit the game or use your tools beyond their intent. I had my own share of problems with roelplaying aspects, dialogue, GUI and QoL, but I would without a doubt say that combat in this game is a flawless paragon.

DOS2 was also one of my favorite games ever, and I'm usually an open world RPG guy. I agree that the writing in DOS2 is amazing - just the right amount of serious with funny sprinkled in. Playing with the Origin characters is a must for anyone's first and/or second play thru. The only criticism I'd give to the origin stories is that some felt rushed at the end. Lohse's story, for example, had breadcrumbs of interest all thru the game, but Beast barely had anything until the final Act. Beast's felt kind of "added in" last minute while Lohse's felt like it was there from the beginning.

Been watching lot of your videos last few days and have come to respect your opinion on games. Started to play Dragon Age Origins and then discovered your page making me want to go back and play some older crpgs I missed. I put about 350 hours into this game and loved it and recommend it all the time. My question for you is have you played BG3, and if so do you think it was different enough from larians games to set it apart? It seemed "samey" to Dos2 and worried me because I really want a true sequel to feel like BG.

Finally picked this game up a couple weeks ago, though this is the first weekend where I've been able to play it for hours on end, and I'm liking it so far. I'll admit, it's a bit hard to get used to the mechanics - there's a lot in this game that just seems kind of poorly explained, and I've been having to check online for answers (eg. is there a point in having more than one character with the lucky charm skill? Apparently not - glad to hear I can respec for free once I hit Act 2, though). My biggest issue with this, though, is the camera. I find it very easy to just walk by a chest without even noticing it, or finding myself stumped because there's supposed to be some obvious lever that opens a door but it's hidden behind some scenery. Maybe it just takes some getting used to, but I've gotten into the habit of constantly panning my camera around just to make sure I haven't missed anything. And sure, you can highlight objects on the ground, but even that is dependent on whether they're both visible to your character and the camera (also, it doesn't highlight containers, which is frustrating). But with that said, it's a pretty good game and I'm enjoying the narrative aspects of it. I also find the combat pretty fun; it's one of the few RPGs where I find myself actually using consumables fairly regularly

Divinity, the game that I cannot deny is great by how many people loved it and it seems extremely well done, but could not stay interested through early act 2 and for me matched up poorly to poe2.
