I feel that this is a setting where a campaign can be made insanely fun depending on the DM. Someone with imagination and a knack for trickery can really run wild here and make the game an experience that will be forever etched into the memory of the players.

You know, I feel the same. The Upper Planes are so underdeveloped, lore wise, compared to the Lower Planes, like the Nine Hells. An adventure or two might fix that.

The 4e-5e transition involved a module called Murder in Baldur's Gate. Unfortunately, it followed the infamous book version of the Baldur's Gate saga. Yeah, Bhaal laughs at your efforts in the CRPG. The Lord of Murder lives again.

Could be wrong but ever since the CRPG from the 90s bearing the city's name Bhaal's symbol has become linked with the city itself. I bet most of my players have no idea that the symbol for BG is actually a ship, not a terrifying skull.

Yes it is unfortunate that game makers put their spin on the places we know and love. Baldur's Gate is a renaissance city of commerce, invention and high exploration. They are just exploiting the name recognition. While not on the Swordcoast Westgate or almost any city of the Moonsea region are also much more Gotham like.

You had me at hell, you lost me at the Forgotten Realms setup. Just make things setting-agnostic or set them in good settings. Stop forcing the Realms, it's a bad setting!

Well..it's FR hell, so using FR as set up makes sense. If it was to be setting agnostic, they would have to remove the bloody war, since that's FR multiverse thing, and wouldn't necessary apply to other settings (like..let's say Deltora), and probably edit out other setting-specific things. Besides, it's not like you have to start in Baldur's gate. You could start off at Ravnica, L.A., or whatever setting you like.

@@gabrielrussell5531 I always considered planescape, eberron and FR as one setting, since for the most part they share the cosmology, lore, etc. Also, lore wise, they ARE the same setting, connected multiverse. Different setting would be one with it's own cosmology, orgin story, etc. For example TES.

@@MaelikWorks That's just the general D&D cosmology that sprang up. It has nothing to do with the Realms. It's mostly Greyhawk-centric.

@@gabrielrussell5531 Which is my point. Bloodwars are part of general D&D setting, as well as the layers, etc. so it doesn't really matter from which world you start. Be it FR, greyhawk, eberon or some other, it's all part of the same general setting.
