Is VTMNTS A Worse Version Of VETEMENTS?

Earlier this year, Guram Gvasalia launched a new brand called VTMNTS that’s sort of a separate off-shoot brand of Vetements. They launched this brand and claim that they are aiming to redefine traditional luxury for the younger generation.
According to an article in WWD, the brand claims that the name was chosen because it’s meant to prove that everything isn’t always about the name the focus is more on the clothing. Is this a very interesting new brand or a Vetements bootleg?

The numbers of the barcode literally spell out "Vetements" on old phone numb keys, so, again, just a different way of spelling - like the brand's name. Honestly, as someone who used to love Vetements it has really been disappointing to watch it after Demna left and this new brand is just yet another disappointment, in a way

People keep commenting that Demna is from Georgia and not the Balkans: 1.) I mention repeatedly in the video he is from Georgia. 2.) He references Balkan and Slavic fashion a lot. He doesn't have to be from a Balkan or Slavic country to reference them. 3.) He is also heavily inspired by Slavic countries like Ukraine and there are countless fashion journalists and publications who have covered all the different times Vetements took inspiration from Ukraine. 4.) The eastern European aesthetic shares many similarities across the board and it makes more sense for Vetements to take inspiration across eastern Europe when you consider people like Gosha Rubchinskiy was involved with the brand in the early stages. Please actually watch the video and listen to what I say before jumping to conclusions

@@realerthanyourdad_ He was 100% inspired by Balkan and Slavic style just the same way he was heavily inspired by Margiela, Martine Rose, his time in Belgium etc. I don’t know why people seem to forget he lived in Ukraine. Just because I say the aesthetic looks Slavic doesn’t mean he isn’t inspired by Georgia at all which is what confuses me - we’ve seen Vetements collections inspired by the Georgian war, dresses inspired by clothes typically worn by women in Soviet Georgia and silhouettes inspired by orthodox Christian priests in Georgia. However, loads of the prints and general aesthetic of the clothes and the marketing campaigns looked Slavic - you had collections that were inspired by clothes he used to see walking around Antwerp when he was studying there etc. The “Antwerpen” logo is literally a direct copy of the logo on clothes in some random corner shops in Antwerp. What’s this weird assumption that because he was born in Soviet Georgia that’s his only inspiration point when he has spoken about his multiple influences from different countries in countless interviews?

It 10000% looks like the new VTMNTS is designed by Gosha. It is the perfect way to utilize Gosha's skills without suffering from his tarnished name, while still being able to put all of Demna's best work into Balenciaga. Also, wasn't Gosha allegedly a key member of the anonymous original Vetements design team?

To me it feels like vtmnts is a way of Guram present his own style and vision that is sort of just a slightly more minimalist take on the vetements style. I guess they chose to make it a new brand cause they thought the toned down aesthetic might disappoint some vetements fans. To me though I really just see them as one brand and don't think too much about it.

It's kind of like a nod to Valentino VLTN really think they thought of Valentino when they came up with this branding. Trouble is Vetements hasn't been doing numbers for a few years now so it's hard to see how VTMNTS that's less known would.

I also made a video discussing this new brand and have very similar thoughts and sentiment about it. I was hoping for something fresh but ultimately what we ‘re getting is redundant. Disappointing but I’m glad that there are other up and coming independent brands doing some really exciting things. Time to make way for the new wave IMO

The barcode means: Vetements For exemple on your telephone or a calculator 8 is T,U,V 3 is D,E,F and etc… Also great video but i think the name VTMNTS adds value to the idea that the important thing is the clothing and not the name because we do not even know how to pronounce it!

i think "post soviet " is the term you are looking for instead of Eastern European or Balkan. Greece is Balkan too… Until the USSR collapsed, Georgia maintained a twisted form of some autonomy, including preservation of their language, via underground privatisation and local corruption, outside of Moscow. One of the industries that did thrive in Soviet Georgia was textiles. Even before the USSR, Georgia was the cool place for Russian elites pre Bolshevik revolution. My point, though new to us, and perhaps contained to the former soviet world and even before, Georgia always had a unique flair and perhaps influence in style on eastern europe and the balkans. its like saying any reference to pizza is American. i know those of us in the west have a hard time contextualising what we dont know. Georgia is not slavic, only considered eastern european or whatever depending on politics and context; VETEMENT is definitely post soviet, but distinctly Georgian.

Majority of the looks and designs are almost direct copies from the photography project 'Slavik's Fashion' by Yurko Dyachyshan. The project ran from 2011-2013 and documented the style of Slavik, a Ukrainian homeless man, who put together a different outfit every day out of shelter donations and clothes he found in the trash. And of course Vetements, or VTMNTS, didn't cite Slavik, Yurko or the project as inspiration for the collection at all

No one can claim any sort of rights on a clothing style that is extremely generic not only in Eastern Europe, but worldwide at this point. And who actually pinpoints their references when doing a fashion show? Sorry, my mistake, Eastern European publications, that still doesn't take away from the fact articles have been published on it & Yurko himself has accused them of copying? Yes, a designer can be inspired by something but when the inspiration is practically identical to the end product, that's copying. And brands/designers do give an overview of their inspirations & references in their show notes, the show notes are just distributed to the press & the public very rarely get their hands on them

VTMNTS my arse, I remember how me and my friends looked through this entire thing on the day of release. Not only the quality is subpar (you can see stitches sticking out, mediocre stitching, etc), but the designs are of so low quality, its ridiculous. The funniest shit is how the Vogue page states that this collection has 0 logotypes, but if you are not completely blind, you can see that every second piece has a logo on it, literally spelling out VTMNTS. This shit is so disappointing, its beyond me. The moment Guram took over Vetements, the entire thing became the part of the fashion world, instead of criticizing it. You truly live long enough to see yourself become a villain. PS - small criticize towards your video: You mentioned in one moment that Demna is from Balkans (as I heard), but he is from Caucasus, 2 different regions. Other than that, good analysis.

the question that appears on my mind is, is the colured television symbol of vtmnts a reference to the 80s & 90s or is it a reference to gaultier? another question: if your design theory is consisted of too many references, how will next generation of designers make references to you in the future? my theory is that vetements (namely demma. a few others like gosha & hba had the chance but they missed it) ) was the designer who grabbed the zeitgeist of the 2010s before and better than anyone else & now im waiting for the new designer of the 2020s. any guesses anyone :D

Love your educational aspect of the channel! However, for future references, Georgia is not Balkans. Except Greece and Turkey, the rest of the countries were the communist reign, which probably made you to assume some connection with Georgia. Regarding the Balkan‘s style, to my opinion, the outfits resemble to 1990‘s ex-You fashion. Especially with the puffy sweatpants, white socks ans slippers combination. And the sweatpants with the side buttons and the side split! I believe only people from rural parts of underdeveloped Balkans still dress like that, the rest of us wear typical EU fashion. As far as I know, in Balkans kids don’t wear school uniforms. At least not in any of the ex-Yu countries. Completely opposite, what you wear to school makes you stand out and show off your wealth. And, a funny thing, someone from Balkans would dress like that for working around the house, for serious hard physical work, gardening, taking the trash out, when you just couldn’t be bothered.

Bringing up Balkan & Slavic styles / culture is because it’s a heavy inspiration point of Demna’s designs which probably comes from the fact that the countries like Ukraine, Russia & Turkey literally border Georgia so there is bound to be a crossover. If you study his work you see how heavy his inspiration points from the Balkans are. Even in this comment section someone earlier was talking about how they took heavy inspiration from Ukraine and Turkey for Vetements and didn’t credit it. If we were speaking super technically I don’t think Georgia is part of the Balkan countries or the Slavic countries but Georgia adopts the same cultural traits (orthodox Christianity, similar language, etc)
