I'm curious about fashion criticism. It used to be a "thing" where "experts" would review a runway show with knowledge and honesty. Now every review is good no matter what the stuff looks like. Why is that? I know Vogue does not do "criticism", they are basically a fancy advertising platform. I am guessing they are bound to LVMH or some other conglomerates that have their designs featured in the Vogue magazines, but is there any real, thoughtful criticism taking place that I, not being part of the fashion world, am not aware of? I follow you so obviously I'm into style, I can look at a garment and make a judgement but I would love to follow a fashion critic as I follow art critics and film critics. You are as close as I have found to honest criticism on the internet.

I find COS as an exception due to its distinguished quality compared to others. Uniqlo for essentials as well. But like you said, so much better finding a miu miu trouser for $300, secondhand of course.

If Demna’s out of ideas then so are Rick and Sabato. I think it’s just an interlude / boldening of the same finger’s print.

If you’re going to New York sometime between March and June, I’d definitely recommend June. March and April are cold and most often rainy. May is a hit or miss. June is very pleasant. That’s when summer really arrives here but before it gets so hot all you wanna do is leave the city.

CELINE by Phoebe was rather colorful, prints, sometimes unusual shapes and feminine, it wasn't the "quiet luxury" genderless look of The Row, or Khatie, Jil Sander, Phoebe under her own brand is very neutral, less feminine. I would say CELINE by Phoebe is different from Phoebe Philo.

I’m late, with everything. I find you amazing… I want to feel better so I watch this… Lots of stuff is causing me to tuck my “turtle neck” inside my turtle shell armor (maybe nearly an analogy to a Kafka novel, or both “Metamorphosis” and “Castle”, if I recall them correctly). Among other surreal things (worse things happen I know, and they have and do to me), most of my clothes (among other very personal things) were stolen. The reply I get is “so… cut your losses and start over”….Umm. Anyway, I’m going to redouble efforts to be efficient (like I used to be). I am not finishing anything I start, and here you are with such super production coming out. I write this at minute 15. A treat remaining (32 more minutes). Love you.

That was not responsive other than to state consistent APPRECIATION. What is written here is bizarrely personal when I’m usually private. “Do not say anything unpleasant or self-oriented” is a mantra I was raised with. I get the feeling TA is similarly private. You (Tuba) say as much here (quite private).

I love Demna, but yes, he is out of ideas. He rose to fame pre-pandemic and now everyone is dressing this way on the street. Anti-fashion is great, I'm a permanent follower of this aesthetic, but we need to find ways to keep it fresh as we develop our language which should be consistent like an archive. This is the challenge! It is not impossible.
@tubaavalon
@tubaavalon 2 күн бұрын
It’s true that an ongoing evolution will stay relevant, I guess that’s the biggest challenge he has. Nevertheless I feel like his fundament is so strong that he can easily build up on it and the evolution doesn’t have to be as extreme anymore. It’s more the nuances that he needs to find

I think he has talent and his early Balenciaga collections were so full of potential, particularly that first womenswear one for 2015. I think ultimately for me good design is both brilliant pattern-making and intuitive textile selection and development - both of which he has scaled back on as each Balenciaga season appears, probably because as a huge brand design is influenced by sales figures. I think Doublet takes his design philosophy much further and with more good humour - I always get a sense that Demna secretly hates his fans, after all, any successful designer probably grapples with the disparity between the client they envisioned in their head and the actual client that has the money to purchase their product - his use of archetypes (especially the LA show) always feels mocking rather than a tribute.
@MarshallSmith-q4e
@MarshallSmith-q4e 2 күн бұрын
@@seanyeo5514 For sure, and my critique as a fan also spills over to Rick Owens. I 100% agree that each designer/house should have an immediately recognizable style and point of view. Also, I believe in evolution even if 'slowness' is the approach. I'm hopeful and appreciate Demna's willingness to 'stand his creative ground'. I am always here for glimmers of hope and miniscule movements.

Imo Demna is the only Designer atm who manages to have good new Innovative Designs that i actually want to buy while still sticking to his own Vision, even tho i would love to see him make a Collection where he does something more. Something where i wouldnt instantly recognize its from him.

Business wise Balenciaga/Kering or whoever is in charge has gotten beyond awful tho, almost nothing costs less then 1k the recycled Moto Jackets 10k insane Piece but realistically who has enough money for that? Most ppl that can afford that wouldnt want an old looking Jacket. Its almost impossible for someone with genuine interest for these pieces who has an normal salary to afford these insane pieces.

I love NIna Ricci and Oscar De La Renta, and while I feel NR is suffering a bit, I feel these brands should not depart from their OG aesthetic - NR is romantic feminine French and Oscar is sophisticated American sportswear. Imagine if NR and Oscar became streetwear look, or The Row, genderless, or Cavalli sexy. OMG, no.
@tubaavalon
@tubaavalon Күн бұрын
yes, that's what I mean as well, some brands suffer from a too strong creative director language that suppresses the brands identity, others flourish. In terms of NR it's been complicated and still is, for Oscar I am a bit scared of what's going to come.

IMHO, Demna started sniffing his own farts, for the lack of a better description. He bought into his own hype, stopped innovating and started navel-gazing instead. It affects many creatives, he’s not unique in this, but nothing Balenciaga made recently was genuinely revelatory to me.

Wait. What? COS is fast fashion??! Well shit. Hearing that is crazy to me. Their quality alone makes them worth the money. And to many folks $135+ for one piece (which is COS range) is a lot of money. So to say that something from COS is in the same FF boat as SHEIN feels horrible to hear. How even can it be? I can see H&Ms stuff being FF bc their stuff is crap. All of it. But every single piece of clothing I own from COS (11) was stitched together with better fabric and last me years. So I don’t get it.
@madibrianna
@madibrianna 17 сағат бұрын
Fast fashion is clothing that is designed and produced with a very short turnaround time, in response to current trends. The alternative being the traditional model where clothing is designed about a year before it's available in stores for consumers to purchase. Definitionally, COS is fast fashion.

its more street also I feel, before 2019 the main looks were skirts, dresses, coats, meanwhile now its sweatsuits are disrupted joggers. I think the darkness increased with the focus on streetwear to differentiate it from the common streetwear on the market. It worked, but I miss the old pieces that I can only find in smaller numbers now throughout the current collections
