Any way you can give is a breakdown on the shell cutting jig you use. Can't figure out the way you have the rollers attached.
@BALES50006 жыл бұрын
I started a jig/fixture video last year, but lost interest. I should revisit that. The end away from the fence comes off. 2 star knobs lock it in place and the 1 knob on the top secures it to the bottom deck of the fixture. Both ends have sets of drilled holes - sections of metal pipe was cut and inserted to act as bushings. The threaded rod, which runs through the center of the rollers, inserts into those holes. I'll be making a new version this winter. It will be larger, more modular, and use steel conveyor rollers, which will drop into slots instead of the captive hole design.

MAN! this is awesome!!!! I suppose the metal parts takes part of the stress so the plywood doesn't break right? awesome awesome

@BALES50007 жыл бұрын
Currently, this is the only one and it's in my personal collection. I have a second planned - 14" and red dye, which I hope to place on consignment with a local drum shop. My cost in parts alone (since I don't buy/stock parts in bulk) is/was right around $250. After labor, I'd price it at $600 - before any shipping costs.
@p_rossi7 жыл бұрын
BALES oh, k. thx haha Only problem is that I have an eletronic set; xD! But if I had an acoustic one (and the money for it), i'd definitely buy one.
@juanzavala25027 жыл бұрын
I just want to ask.. what were you thinking?
@BALES50007 жыл бұрын
Several things, I guess. 1. I could make "ordinary" drums or I could try designs I've never seen before. 2. Split vent snares exist, but I've only seen them as two separate shell sections with an evenly spaced gap. 3. Is the split vent the main visual feature? Should it be? 4. What if I added zipper tracks to each side of the gap? Need the zipper pull to have that make sense ... that means part of the zipper track has to be closed. 5. Does the gap really need to be a consistent spacing? I see no reason why it can't fluctuate. There are no rules about split vents ... if there are rules I don't know about, screw them. 6. I'm definitely making it look like the shell is being unzipped to enlarge the standard vent. Then a whole bunch of measurements to deal with lug, throw off, and butt plate placement ... followed by just trying it knowing that it might not work or could be a disaster.

@thesuccessfulbarber7 жыл бұрын
me too. i have some 63 slingerland with re rings and it gives a nice percussive thud. seems a lot of drum builders are going to thin bearing edges whuch give a timbale effect! then the drummer has to use tape or moongel to dampen it.. drum builders should bring rerings back!
@SteveStockmalMusic7 жыл бұрын
I was thinking... it could open and close and that would affect the sound ... so you could get different snares sounds for recording without having to take different drums with you to the studio. You could be onto something great here
@BALES50007 жыл бұрын
An adjustable vent would be nice, but doing it with a zipper would introduce too much noise/rattling. I have seen it down with a mechanical iris.
@SteveStockmalMusic7 жыл бұрын
See... gotcha thinking 🤔 Could be the NEW snare standard
@dreamer0978 жыл бұрын
sooo it's just to look cool right? does it affect the sound in any way?
@BALES50008 жыл бұрын
Very dry with a quick decay/short sustain because the air isn't 'trapped" to resonate the shell. I hope to get it into a recording studio this summer for a follow up video.
@dreamer0978 жыл бұрын
ooo, that sounds really cool actually. If you remember, can you respond here so I can check it out? I produce electronically, and have always found live snares to be a bit loose to work with on their own. Amazing craftsmanship btw, keep it up.
