This is J Stephen Roberts and Deanna Proach's second podcast talk show. We were very excited to have Dr. Helena Schrader on to talk about Balian of Ibelin. Balian has been made famous as the lead character in Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven. In this podcast Dr. Schrader discusses the myth versus the reality behind Balian. I remember being psyched to watch Kingdom of Heaven...then the disappointment of having the temple knights turned into agitating fops and hearing all that infidel talk from the "crusaders." Didn't they behead people for talking like that? Ah well, at least the costumes and soundtrack were good if a bit uniform.

The costumes were, on the whole, pretty well done for a medieval film (usually they're trash).

Still love Kingdom of Heaven as a movie, despite the historical flaws. I think Balian emphasized the true purpose of the crusades perfectly. Love this channel by the way, keep up the phenomenal work.

Great interview w Dr Schrader! Though Ridley Scott is among my five fave directors of all time and his meticulous, detailed attention to authenticity: costumes, building of the actual Old City of Jerusalem(in the Moroccan desert, I think?) the construction of fully operational siege towers and tribouchets all factor into why is among my favourites, nevertheless, it is unfortunate that his story lines veer so widely from historical accuracy. However, in spite of all, his Director's Cut enhanced the film's emotional satisfaction enormously and made for quite empathetic characters.

So Kingdom of Heaven wasn't as off as I thought it was. That's good to know cause I quite liked that film. Also Balian was more interesting which is another good thing to know. Hope someone makes a Crusades film right. At least in my lifetime.

Balian of Ibelin was one of the most important figures in Christian history of Jerusalem. Mostly due to his courage and tenacious will. For me, he is third biographically to Baldwin I and IV in the importance of the History of Jerusalem. Go Balian.

Bohemond of Antioch holding the rear enables the taking of Jerusalem. I wish he could have gone, and so did he, but he was the preeminent military leader of his era. He knows how to trap and hold territory, he establishes the entire policy of the Crusader states of holding territory with vastly inferior numbers. But I agree Balian is the most important since the first crusade, other than Baldwin the IV. It’s those two together allows the crusaders to rally around them.

I wish they would create a film which tells all the story about crusades and jihad. Because, The crusades were more as a defense tactical for Christian countries against all the jihad wars that Muslims were executing around the middle East and Europe. The crusades were only a few compared to the thousand wars led by Muslims. But sadly, the political correctness in this corrupt world would never allow it anymore.

I stopped watching the movie when Orlando Bloom started the nonsense speech about fraternity with the good moors. The movie was childish shit from minute 1 but that speech was so grief I had to tell my friends an excuse to leave.

Helena is a great writer and I cannot press that enough.. in the venue of Shelby foote as far as someone who is a writer and should do a history, for TRUE writers should do history to make it more understandable.

I have a question for the video author: Were there any battles during this time period in the Valley of Meggido? I ask because in the OT prophets there is a verse about the "Kings of the North shall set their thrones at Jerusalem" and looking at that verse through the eyes of history we can say proof-positive "yes" that event did happen with the Crusades. (Yet the writing of the Prophets is actually quite early. the Quran Scrolls have copies of Isaiah and Jeremiah that date back to 100 BC)

I despised this movie. Balian was heavily fictionalized for KoH The movie worked because it's a historical drama. Even a historically inaccurate historic drama still works as drama. Let's be serious about the historic inaccuracy, again. There was not even an attempt

Bill Gregory I think he means that Orlando Bloom's Balian did not have the world view, or demeanor, of Knight, acting more like a modern atheist. I definitely share that criticism. The actual events would have made for a much better movie.

Bill Gregory I understand entirely. However, having binged this series, I feel like the historical events would have made a much more compelling story. Of course the character would be altered to be more acceptable to modern palates, but to do what Ridley Scott did is to crap on history for the sole sake of propaganda. A good example of a compromise between history and narrative that sacrifices neither is Arn the Knight Templar.
