We might be in the middle of a MAJOR drought, but this hay looks AMAZING!
Despite the lack of rain, it's still a run to try to get it OFF the field JUST IN CASE the sky suddenly changes it's mind and lets out a downpour!.
We are growing 15 acres of pure orchard grass as small square bales for horse hay on our first generation family farm built from scratch!
Our hay operation uses a 9ft 1219 John Deere mower Conditioner, an 11 wheel New Holland speed rake (v-rake), and a New Holland 575 high capacity small square baler, along with our fleet of tractors: new Holland T5.115 and TYM 574. Our hay accumulator is called an accumalgrapple, this one is made by MAxilator and it's been a pain in our BUTT from day one! But it's far cheaper than a Kuhns system, so we are struggling along with it!
We average 2 cuttings of hay a year but if we get enough rain we can get three cuttings!

If your windrows were narrower and fluffier the baler would have picked up more hay. That also would have prevented dampness underneath them. If there is dampness they need to be tedded out and dried, then raked up again. There are simply no shortcuts in haying. I know you thanked the big guy, but I'm pretty sure he has nothing to do with this.
@This1LifeWeLive
@This1LifeWeLive Жыл бұрын
I needed that extra dampness to keep the hay from being TOO dry. It's already far too dry. I like my hay between 11-15% moisture, and this was about 6%. Its so dry, that when I throw a bale down from the loft, it explodes hay. It just shatters. That's why I didn't rake it twice. Extra raking means more shattering on the field and more dirt picked up. I should have tightened in the rake to make the windrows more narrow, but next time ;)

Thankyou Dr. Lee! Have you ever checked old rainfall totals from ages ago in your area? I looked at ours from 100 years ago, and it was actually HALF of what we now get. in the 1920's rainfall totals were much much less, didn't start picking up until the 1970's perhaps . . . quite interesting!

Just a thought, you need to bale in clockwise circles. Easier turning and you won't put your baler driveshaft and universal joints in a bind. Be careful and God bless you !!!!!! Edd
@This1LifeWeLive
@This1LifeWeLive Жыл бұрын
It always seemed to me that running clockwise caused extra stress on the u joints since the baler is already leaning toward the counter clockwise direction?
@ronsommer9409

@@This1LifeWeLive Your turns are painful to watch. A baler or forage chopper pto shafts were designed for clockwise turns. When you make a clockwise turn, the baler pickup is pivoting less so you can get lined up on the windrow. Pull type rakes were also designed for clockwise turns.
@ronsommer9409
@ronsommer9409 Жыл бұрын
@@This1LifeWeLive I wondered how you turned when you mowed. When mowing, you showed clockwise turns ( at least on the first rounds). You should also bale the first rounds turning clockwise.

The horses are very pleased and happy you've got a bigger yield. Maybe a down payment on new baler, down the road. It's enough to fight with the weather much less a finicky baler.

It sound like you knotter is missing the spring that is by the mechanism the runs the knotter is broken or missing. I looked at a parts schematic and there are 2 springs in that area. Take your owners manual by the baler and look for them and you might find the issue. Also you might need to replace the knives that cut the twine. Poly twine is hard on them.
@This1LifeWeLive
@This1LifeWeLive Жыл бұрын
I attempted to replace the knives, but they were STUCK TIGHT, so I attempted to sharpen them, lol. I'm sure that didn't help matters, but the knots not tying is likely not due to the knives . . . something is slightly off. I will definitely check those springs!

6-28-23 Illinois Hey Sue glad see back baling hay !! Always make LEFT turns to keep the pto universal joints in as much alignment as possible. You can make right turns as long as that is not you most common turn. Compare it like bending your back backwards.....doesn't feel good !! Regarding long bales........Check condition of the METERING WHEEL it may be the little teeth are worn and or have build up of dirt Replace if worn or take apart and clean teeth with wire brush. When it slips on the METERING ARM the arm does not raise to trip the knotter into action. Hope this helps Bye.👍👍🌹🌹

@@This1LifeWeLive Yes as I suspected !! Since baler not stored inside the little teeth tips are rusted away result in poor traction. Just order and replace you can't fix it !!! I suggest next winter to put a tarp over the knotter for protection. A knotter ties in nano seconds.........needs to be in TOP CONDITON !! Bye

Happy Birthday! Seems the older balers worked better than the new ones. Mechanical weight adjustments, things like that. Don't run the baler by the tachometer, run it by ear. You will get used to the sound when it is running right, and soon be able to run it by ear better than by tach.

I agree, Erik wants to get a new baler but I think we'd still have the same issues. Plus spending $1500 on baler repairs is cheaper than $20,000 on a new baler ;)

Put a SPINNER on that steering wheel. More control. If your windrows were tighter (closer together) you would not leave so much behind. Don't drive ON the windrow. You could rake the field again and get some extra bales. Don't make empty passes, its' not the Space Shuttle. That Baler deserves to be inside over Winter. Your hair looks nice Up. So glad your crop worked out well for content. Wear an N-95 Mask, even in the cab.

I believe I did cover that in an earlier video . . . there was NO CONCLUSIVE IDENTIFICATION. The best they could tell, was that the trees all came sick from the nursery. The mineral content tested the exact same between the live trees, the yellow tree and the red trees. They did sseem to be lacking in phosphorus though, which is odd considering they had slow release fertilizer tabs good for 2-3 years :( But NONE of our bare root trees showed the same odd red death . . .

You should go right turn, right turn, right turn.. Reason>> PTO stays more inline, the baler makes a slower turn following the tractor. less likely to hit something with the baler. IF you need to make a left make it wide and/or disable PTO. Disable PTO when not in use> hay dogs are beating away on the frame which shorten their life. Take one row skip two come back and repeat making turn arounds wide each time. Really need to lift the kicker wheel up and try and make fluffy - smaller width wind rows. Just my observations.... Kicker will put clumps in your windrows and square balers hate those. Kicker is used for wet hay in the middle of the windrow. Over all nice job!

700 bales are about 100 bales short of what a 53ft enclosed van trailer will hold, 38--21 bale bundles is the normal amount we deliver to the TSC stores...... 39 bundles doesn't allow the store techs room to break down the bundles as they sell out of the trailer........Our Baler/Baron setup can be used it the field, but we prefer to use it stationary under cover...... because small squares even in a bundle tend to loose color and conformity with multiple handlings......The small squares from a converted 4x5 round fresh out the Baron have a crisp, fresh look, when loaded onto the trailer.......Hybrid Bermuda Grass is the most fed grass variety throughout the South.........
