The much needed ball return system
•••
We’re getting close to finishing this piece off- next up is the ball catcher/return system. This turned out to be one of the most complicated non-mechanical parts that I’ve ever designed. Not only did it need to function well, but it could make or break the entire aesthetics of the sculpture.
•••
I also decided to explore a completely new printing method (SLA resin printing) and a flexible material. Thanks so much to @Formlabs for making this possible. Not only did they send me a Form 3+ machine to mess around with, but they also made a machine that was easy to use right out of the box.
•••
Of course the catcher didn’t work the way it was supposed to right out of the box, but instead of reprinting any of the parts, I was able to simply add an adapter which tilted the catcher back and from that point on it worked perfectly!

tip: After the print remove the supports before curing it. It will be way more easy if you don’t use flexible PLA. If it is to hard heat up the supports with a hot air gun.

I think just a tilted basketball court floor with like some clear walls on either side and a collection spot under the hoop would've been very aesthetic for the whole basket ball swoosh and drop, but the trade off wouldn't be the most accurate or timely when it's left to bounce around.

I know it sounds a bit sill but would love to see you add a "score" counter that just counts the number of total baskets across its up time. Reset by the machine getting turned off of course

Congrats on the Formlabs printer! Keep us posted with its reliability. A lot can change in 5 years, but I used one in 2018 for an internship and it was a nightmare to maintain.

At my last job I was the only one that used our Form3+ so I could print whatever I wanted on it. I miss it so much! It was seriously one of the main draws that made me want to stay there

A word of advice I got from another youtuber is to remove the resin supports after washing, and before you cure it, I know it worked now, but who knows, anyways I'd recommend it

Could you demonstrate why the catcher needs to flex? In the video it seems pretty rigid and doesn't seem like it needed to be flexy.
@Engineezy
@Engineezy Жыл бұрын
The flex is so the balls don’t bounce around too much, but it was mainly because I could haha
