How amazing that there are as many recordings by Vernon Dalhart preserved as there are. When I was a lad just three-foot-three (5 years old) I spent many an hour listening to my grandfather 's recordings on a machine of about the same vintage as Dalhart's early stuff. Grandpa (Scotsman and Idaho sheep breeder, Michael Barclay) had a collection of Dalhart records. This ballad was among the set. My favorite was THE LITTLE BLACK MUSTACHE, but I liked all of them. Many thanks to everyone who has uploaded the songs to KZbin. Even though I last heard them at that young age, they are well- remembered, (Not many memories survive from the age of five).

My mother used to sing this song as she cleaned house back in the 50's. Brings back memories.

Love this- the earliest recording I've heard-fun to play on the banjo. I'm archivist at the Historic Washington Co. Courthouse in Stillwater,MN. In the winter of 1884 we had as guests in our county jail, Bob, Jim and Coleman Younger for two weeks while repairs were made after a huge fire to the State Pen on the north end of town where the Boys drew life sentences.

This is one of the best versions of this song that I have heard. It's 2nd only to when my Dad used to sing it to me as a boy. RIP Pa. I came here to hear the real version of it. I just watched The Long Riders. It was an okay movie, but I hate it when at the end, they try to make the song PC, and won't talk about the cowardice of Bob Ford. That song even says that he was killed by Bob and Charlie Ford

An amazing recording. Even though it bends history, it is, in itself, history. Thank you for uploading this.

The records I remember from the past sounded just like this, with crackles and hisses. Somehow it just sounds better than the "clean" sound of a CD. (8 Track anyone?)

This is where Woody Guthrie got "I Ain't Got No Home" and he sang Jesse James often. Also wrote a song based on this called "Jesus Christ". All great songs.
