Ballast Märklin M-rail for increased realism

In this video I incorporate and ballast the classic European railsystem Märklin "the M-rail" for increased realism. The ballasting is permanent and not possible to remove efterwards.

For instance - I've been looking for som RailMatch paint in Denmark, unfortunately without any luck, so I tried to order some in the good old UK ... and guess what - it's not possible to send fluids by post over the English Channel og the North Sea. However toilet paper is available in Denmark. LOL

Hello Marklinofsweden. Best wishes for 2018 with a lot of video's comming! Nice M-track ballast-tutorial 2.0! I ballast the M-track with aquariumsand and paint it with acrylics. Works fine for me, but I'm considdering to add the dust ;-) From me one tip: I put a little piece of aluminium-tape under the fixing-holes of the rails, so there is no hole when the ballast is applied! Nice update to the technique. I was planning to use the 1.0 version on my c track layout in the coming years. How did you clean the studs? I ask as the c-track studs are not as smooth as the m-track studs. I suppose taping up the center to protect them from glue and paint will be critical.

So what do you about the point switches, to avoid them being glued fix or not working due to ballast?

I did this before with K track but the trains never ran well on it again. I was very careful not to get the center rail but some glue got on it. I was surprised you just let the glue get on it and your trains still worked! Could it have to do with the kind of glue or do you have a special way of cleaning it after the ballast without removing the good stuff?

arnold894 Hi Arnold! Intresting information! Okay.. No, I have not had any problems after ballasting the M-rail like this. I do nothing else than just sanding the center rail clean once all is dry.

Hello. The third rail conectors tend to fail with time and dead areas apear. How do you prevent this from happening? How about an individual feeder wire soldered to every track section?

What is the spike stuff in the middle of the sleeper on the marklin track??????? It's not on hornby or peco track or real life so what does it do??? Is it for censers? A 3rd rail fitting?

This was the cheapest track system I could find. It´s really a 60s toy train, but it was the only system I could afford. I hate the spikes, but one learn to live with them..

That's the equivalent of a third rail. Each one of the spikes is grounded and the vehicle's pick-up shoe glides above these spikes and grounds its motor(s) through them. Now, depending on which remaining rail (left or right) you apply the transformer AC voltage, the motor(s) will either spin left or right (moving the vehicle forward or back).

hey marklinofsweden! how do you keep your installation clean? with that much detail on it, it'll be nearly possible to vaccum it, right? how do you keep it dust proof?

HAFFL Hi! 😊 Thank you for commenting! Most of the dust in a normal home comes from textiles like curtains, carpets, cloths, bettlinen and stuff. I have my layout in the garage, which has pretty clean air. The ventilations for air intake comes from outside and do not contain dust. So... I don’t have to vacuum the layout the way I woulf have to in a living room for instance..

That is a good question. For me, I have it in a spare bedroom so I put mesh filters in the vents. They are cheap and you can rinse them under water after a while to clean them. IF you must vacuum, use a hepa filter.

Sonny Latchstring Yes.. A strip of masking tape on the rear side of the tracks along the center stud lead gives additional improved look If the tracks can be prepared ahead of assembly. In my case they were already in place on the layout, so I couldn’t do that..
