The back/lats cue makes so much sense when you think about it, really anchors you. Stable instead of flailing.

I recently binge watched Russian ballerinas doing fouettés, most of them, especially younger generation, actually do the front one. Only zackharova and very few others dancers did strictly “plié to the side” which surprised me a lot. 😮

Hi ladies! I'm Cuban trained, so I do my fouettes: front, to the side, relevé. Thanks for demostrating all three types!

A really great analysis and critique of the different fouetté styles. I am naturally a LEFT turner, so for me learning in flat shoes came first. I am also initially Russian trained (Mdme Helena Antonova), but subsequently learned the Checetti and RAD styles. Technically I found the latter style fouettés the best for me. It’s also much easier to turn on pointe. Fouettés are a lot of work and practice, but once you get it, you get it.

I didn't realise there were three types! My teacher tried to teach me the plie to releve one, but I was really struggling. I may try one of the others to start out with.

Just an observation tutu's offer a better perspective for leg movements and perception for angles adding a point of reference.
