The thing is this is one of the easiest spins. I find that non figure skaters like fast but very easy spins over slower technically perfect spins that are way for complex

@@sophialiu4043 nah. most pro skaters couldn’t do this perfect of a scratch spin imo. of course they can do a normal upright spin but they wouldn’t be able to make it this fast, perfectly centered, and aesthetically pleasing. even a lot of times when a skater ends a spin with a corkscrew or a simple scratch spin I notice how much they travel.

@@user-kh9ki3kq8m because of rule changes skaters are expected to do combo spins to get maximum points. It is hard to keep a spin centered when changing positions. Blur scratch spins by comparison are easier to center. Ronnie Robertson in his day was considered the best spinner. John Misha was also an excellent spinner.

"Textbook" perfect scratch spin. Today's skaters are too busy practicing triples and quads (men) to spend time perfecting spins. The scoring system gives points for revolutions even if a skater falls, which is why the men's competition features so many falls--even among the winners.

Yeah, kind of sad, the direction the sport's taken. Medvedeva's spins, for example, travel a good meter or so... And the current system doesn't really force them to improve spins because they aren't worth much anyway. Not only that, but it also encourages them to do sloppy jumps because that's the way to win... I also wonder whether this will also result in much shorter careers now that kids are being forced to do quads just to place in the top 5-8 at JUNIOR worlds... Will ruin their knees much faster, that's for sure.

There's got to be a separate contest for artistic presentation for both men & women. Today's system leaves you with a jam packed LP. Fine. Olympics got no issue w/an event arising from a core event. (Men's 100 free...50 free) With a Ladies AI, we'd see beautiful spirals, spins, flowing combinations...⛸️

Best scratch spin i've seen! Its funny how you see so many skaters trying other more complicated spins like bielmans and flying camels and their scratch spins look like they havent practiced them in weeks! scratch spins are beautiful spins and probably should get more credit in competitions then they do esp. if they looks as nice as Dorothy's or Paul Wylie's !

This is precision. I miss the days when technique really counted. Now we get "quads" where the edges are sloppy and there's almost full revolutions before the skater leaves the ice and they still count it as quad... and the careers are so short due to back injuries from cranking thru rotations to get those quads done that you don't get to see skaters evolve and really master their craft... but this, this shows calm mastery.

Posting in 2022. Quads are all that matters in today's skating. If I saw ANY of the little teen skaters do this I would faint. Of course, I love the advancements and the crazy quad jumps but please please put some artistry back in the routines- I want everything not just skate fast, jump skate jump...falls are even ok if you attempt these new jumps! I want Dorothy perfection too!

The only skater with a similar scratch spin was Paul Wylie. Both took lessons from the legendary coach Gustave Lusi. Paul was good but not as good as Dorothy's. It was obvious that Dorothy had worked to improve on the scratch spin as a professional and made it a major highlight in the pro programs. The spin during her amateur days was centered and decent speed but nowhere close to the the wow factor that is seen in this clip.
