One of the earliest games on the NES and the bonus stage still has one of my most favorite songs on the NES! I think I might add that "Win" jingle as like a text tone on my phone or something lol!

I like the Vs. version the best. I have a friend that has a Red Tent Vs System so I feel fortunate that I've gotten to experience it on the original hardware. I like that that version has the added third tier of height on the play field as well.

It’s says the NES version was in 1985 but you can clearly see on the title screen that it says 1984

Released first in Japan in 1984. Typically, a game wouldn't be ready for export from Japan until the next year. EDIT: Actually, it was released stateside in November of 1984. The game debuted as an arcade game then and the copyright for the property was also filed then.

It's too bad the NES version didn't retain the vertical scrolling from the Vs. version. I think the only reason is because Nintendo's early cartridge PCBs control the scrolling direction with a permanently soldered jumper. In order to add the horizontal scrolling "Mode B" to the game, they had to set the jumper accordingly and couldn't have vertical scrolling in Mode A. Some later cartridge PCBs mapped the scrolling/mirroring setting to a register that could be changed by the program, allowing it to change during the game. I think MMC-1 probably provided that. It could have also been done with a discrete flip-flop, but at this early date I think all of Nintendo's games had the same simple PCB to keep their manufacturing streamlined. I'd love to see Vs. System versions of the early games ported over to NES, along with the addition of high score save.

A shame we didn't get the DS version, just because it had Tingle in it. Truthfully, I never really was annoyed by him. (Though, unfortunately Nintendo is aware that "Americans hate Tingle." Which is also why Tingle wasn't in "Twilight Princess," and why his other DS games weren't released in America.)
