This time at Balmer's workshop, I take a new approach with a walk-around video of one of my production products rather than featuring the build. Join me while I go over the features and options of my Xterra rear bumper center section replacement.

As of the publishing date of this video, I only have a few of my Nissan products and some of my Suzuki products featured but these sections will be expanded upon soon and other sections will be added as well including the highly anticipated "DIY - Builder Parts" section! Thanks for the compliments. This is a very popular bumper, possibly my best selling. My design, as mentioned in the video, has features and options not available with other brands and the build quality is very high as is the finish/coating. I've worked with Xterra rear bumpers from two other companies, who's names I won't mention, and I can tell you they were poorly designed and built. I've also had customers tell me of negative experiences with bumpers offered by other brands, including having the spare tire carrier fall completely off of the bumper in travel. While it may seem expensive, it may lend some perspective to know that two of the biggest off-road fabrication companies in North America (Iron Cross and Shrockworks) have gone out of business within the last 12 months. It's very tough making money in this industry. The overhead is massive and the profit margins are razor thin. This is a very reasonably priced bumper.

Thanks for your interest! This bumper needs to be built on the vehicle to insure the fitment is just right... I don't have a jig for this bumper or the room to store another jig so, unfortunately, this one is for locals only ;)

Nice! But what do you do about backup sensors? My 2014 has two in the middle part of the stock bumper.

Thanks for your comment! I actually haven't dealt with proximity sensors on any of these bumpers yet and I've produced a couple dozen... What model is your Xterra? I have incorporated proximity sensors into some of my other rear bumpers, including the Nissan Frontier, so I'm guessing it would be a similar approach (adding small sections of the appropriate diameter tube to house the sensors and cutting it on an angle to match the back side of the bumper)...

@@BalmersWorkshop It's a 2014 X-Terra Pro-4X. It's got a backup camera and sensors in the rear bumper. If you Google a picture, you'll see that there's four sensors along the length of the bumper with two in the center portion which I believe get's removed when you install a bumper like yours. I guess you could disconnect them and perhaps tuck in the wiring, but I don't think anyone would want to do that. I'm no fabricator, but I think the easiest thing to do would be to drill two holes in your bumper matching the stock spacing and hole diameter where these sensors could be installed. My guess is folks like you making these bumpers are probably missing out on potential sales because there's no support for all the Xterras equipped this way. 🙂

Hello, in the video you say the rear bumper will fit all years of Xterra, but web site list it as fitting 05 and up I have a 2001 xterra se will rear bumper fit it? By far the best constructed an useful bumper i have found would love to buy it if it will fit

Hi Patrick, thanks for your view and your comment! This bumper fits all years of Xterra - it's the front bumper that doesn't fit the first gens... I'll adjust the website to reflect that. Thanks very much for your interest! Unfortunately the 1st gen Xterras have a different bolt pattern for the mounts as well as a different bumper profile so it doesn't work.

No offense, but some company needs to make a rear bumper that replaced the crap stock step-up plastic with steel. What is the point of a rear off road bumper if it doesn't do that? The only thing the driver is gaining is a rear tire mount.

No offense taken. In fact, there are a couple of companies which offer full replacement rear bumpers for 2nd gen Xterras so, if you're after one, they can be sourced. Personally, I see absolutely no gains in replacing the entire bumper rather than the center section alone. Replacing the plastic sides of the stock bumper yields the same clearance and departure angle while adding literally hundreds of pounds given the enormous size of the side portions. Since there is weight being transferred further to the rear of the vehicle by moving the spare tire from the stock location to the swingarm, it's even more preferable to limit the weight of the bumper in order to limit suspension sag. A complete steel replacement bumper would very likely require new, stiffer rear leaf springs to level the vehicle which is another big expense for an unnecessary addition. The price of a full replacement would also be at least double that of a center section replacement - again, for no clear advantage. I'm curious to know what issues the stock sides have presented to you?

@@BalmersWorkshop I weigh too much for those stupid plastic step ups, and people have literally destroyed both of them by backing into my car. Nobody even needs the step ups. They just want some steel protection for the rear corners of the vehicle. A small steel plate or tube can be added for that protection, while also allowing clearance for larger rear tires. Trust me, I'm not the only Xterra owner who wants this option. Some people actually fabricate some themselves. I think there's a company that sells such a bumper, but you have to weld it together yourself. In the past, a company provided an option (I forget which company), but I don't think it's available anymore.

​@@BalmersWorkshop I definitely understand your point about the weight. That's one part of the 2nd Gen Xterra's I think they designed poorly. I wonder if a company offers aluminum sheet metal replacements for those stupid pieces of plastic. It doesn't need to be super strong. It just needs to give extra clearance for the rear tires, and stick out a bit to protect the rear lights.

​@@BalmersWorkshop Coastal Offroad is the company that makes the weld-together bumper that completely deleted the rear step ups. They say it weighs 139_lb. I'm not sure how much your bumper weighs. I have a master's in mechanical engineering, but I'm not a welder. I'd have to find a weld shop to do the work for me properly. Their option doesn't give a lot of protection for the rear tail lights. But unless something really bad happens while offroading,I suppose that's not a huge deal.
