Balsa USA 1/4 Scale Cub Aircraft modified into Army L4 Grasshopper

First flight of Balsa USA 1/4 scale Cub converted to Army Air Corps L4 Grasshopper. Wingspan 108 inches and weight 20 pounds powered by Saito 1.50 four-cycle engine.
Runway is north-south so fighting a 7mph crosswind made for long takeoff rolls and hot landings. Grasshopper flew well with slight aileron trim needed.
Flying field of Western RC Flyers located near Mead, Nebraska approximately 15 miles west of Omaha. Airplane built/flown by Nelson Carpenter. Steady video by Tom Wild and much appreciated assistance with first flight by many of my flying buddies.
Quarter scale airplane modeled after full scale Grasshopper used by Army Air Corps in the Pacific theatre during WWII circa 1943. Currently it is based in Hawaii and flying. Owner is Tony Skinner.

Yep, you're so right about the suffix. I've been meaning to change it and just leave it L-4. The four-stroke really makes the Grasshopper! Thanks!

Very nice model ,landings nice and smooth.concidering the winds landings wre good too.over all very nice and calm ..That 4sroke makes all the differance .

Beautiful! Love the four stroke sound. I think that war tiem L-4 letter suffixes ran only to "J".

wow great job what a beautiful plane! i sure would love it in my hangar. i think i would put a camera inside with a pan tilt to look around while flying. and i would use fatshark goggles eventually to fly from the cockpit view as i do with other planes i have. only they are smaller so the camera must always stay outside the plane but it is so much fun. theres nothing that comes close to getting to leave the ground to fly and your safe on the ground but it feels like your up there. thanks for sharing what a plane so nice and stable flies smooth im very impressed. question how long will a tank of gas fly for total time? i only fly electric so far. tommy
