Rescuers were searching for as many as 20 people after a major bridge collapsed in the US state of Maryland, plunging several vehicles into the water below. The accident in the city of Baltimore happened in the early hours of March 26, 2024. The Singapore-flagged cargo vessel Dali crashed into one of the supports of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing the roadway to break apart in several places as it plunged into the water.

Even though the ship was sailing at a slow speed approximately 7 knots as it exited the harbour, given the vessel's mass of about 100,000 tons, the amount of Kinetic Energy that the ship possessed at the point of impact would have been rather great. Since, Kinetic energy is directly proportional to the mass of the object and to the square of its velocity, the vessel's speed alone does not tell the full picture (K.E. = 1/2 m v2). Those who suggested that the bridge is 'tofu', it is rather unlikely that any structure could have survived that collision unscatched, especially so since Francis Scott Key Bridge was a steel arch continuous through truss bridge built in 1977.

There was nothing wrong with the bridge's construction, apart from some connections being too sturdy. No bridge would survive being rammed by a cargo ship. But a bridge like this should have had protective structures built around and away from the piers to protect them from collisions, and this one didn't.
