So great to see BASEBALL again.. no graphic barrage; no heavy metal jams.. just ball players playing the game. And announcers who KNEW how to call a game and fill time. Love seeing MY Tigers playing again after all these years! Aurelio Rodriguez, Mickey Stanley, Willie Horton, Freehan, Lolich, Kaline... even Eddie Brinkman and Tony Taylor. Not to mention the great Orioles! Boy, I was lucky to be a kid at that time!

I was 9-years old and the '72 Tigers were my team! It was the year I really started collecting Topps cards and I still remember that feeling of getting a Tiger in the pack! I'm sure I watched this game...unless Sir Graves was on. (Detroiters will get the reference)

I was 9 years old when this game was played as well, and might have watched this game. I was buying Topps cards too (I never liked the gum in the cards though) and remember that same feeling of going through the pack to see if there were any Tigers. And watched Sir Graves Ghastly. We listened to the playoffs that year in class and I remember in the 5th Game, school ended with the game still going on, and I ran all the way from school to home to watch the rest of the game (we lost).

Wow, 50 years ago. Can’t say I remember this specific game, but I remember the ‘72 season well. Came down to the Red Sox and Tigers, last three games of the season. Kaline went nuts at the plate for the last couple weeks, leading the Tigers to the Eastern Division crown.

I had just turned 5 years old...2 days before. Hard to believe...how far we have come in television technology. At that age...I do remember black and white only TV's...but only a very few were around. Now...I can watch this game, (or even the 1952 World Series, or the 1979 All-Star Game...etc....), on KZbin...on a phone. Absolutely amazing.

Doyle Alexander (13) warming up in the bullpen for Baltimore. He would be on the Tigers '87 team that went to the playoffs. Paul Jata (31) was just 22 years old. He played in just 32 games in the majors. So brief. Stayed in the minors until 1976. Wonder what he did with the rest of his life.

KALINE never played in the Minors and won an AMER. LEAGUE batting title at 20(.340 in 1955), making him the youngest player ever in MLB with a batting crown.. oh, and he was signed right out of high school at 18 in BALTIMORE, his birthplace, immediately coming to the MLB DET. TIGERS..

Amazing footage I’m a pirates fan and one of our glory eras in our history was during this time too. We just beat the Orioles In the World Series in the year prior. The footage looks more like it was made in the 50s and 60s tho cause obviously color television has already been around for some years by this time.

I was at game 5 of the 1972 Tigers playoff with Oakland. oakland scored the winning run when the 1st base umpire called a guy safe at first when he was literally out by 2 feet. Norm Cash was besde himself. The fans were so mad that there were whiskey and beer glass bottles thrown on the field in centerfield. George Hendrick caught the final out in centerfield- he easily could have tripped on a bottle. It was insanity that the umpires let the game continue under those circumstances but I think they were afraid of a riot or something.. It was a shame to lose like that as this was the last hurrah for the 1968 Tigers heroes.

Well, umpires "called" the rule book strike zone back then. Faster game; more strikes/less balls called; starters threw fewer pitches, meaning they went longer into games and fewer delays for a stream of relievers.

I could never understand how he made it look like the ball picked up speed the closer it got to first base -- but I LOVED it!!! My family also had the good fortune of getting to see Aurelio hit pretty well over the multitude of games we attended, both in Detroit and in Arlington. Flipping back through the scorecards many years ago, I noticed he seemed to be picking up a lot of hits, so I started keeping track a bit. And for that nice fat stack of scorecards, Aurelio's batting average was over .350!

Billy Martin and Norm Cash did not see eye to eye. Martin platooned Cash occasionally . Paul Jata had a cup of coffee with Tigers in 72. Kept off post season roster. Jata sent to minors. Never to return to majors. He did appear on a 1972 topps rookie baseball card.

The time it took to play games then is often mentioned, but pace of play is more important. When the between-inning breaks were changed from one to two minutes, that instantly added 18 or more minutes of elapsed time to each game, even the quick ones. Post-season breaks (which were also a minute) are now three minutes or more. Keep the action moving and the length of the game doesn't matter as much.

Kind of feel bad for the Detroit Tigers shortstop & 3rd baseman, Ed Brinkman was a great shortstop and could of won more than 1 gold glove in the '70s... but in the way was Luis Aparicio and Mark Belanger as for the hot corner Aulerio Rodriguez got his in '76 cuz Brooks Robinson didn't play much and was about to retire, but before 1976 Brooks (the human vacuum cleaner) won an astounding 16 gold gloves ... WOW !! ... By the way , speaking of gold gloves , the birds succeeded in 29 gold glove earnings in the 70s while the tigers at the same span ('70 thru '79) captured 4 gold gloves ⚾️🌟🌟🌟

At 20:30 Curt Gowdy mentioned that Freehan hit a Grand Slam in Boston. I remember watching that game. I believe the Tigers were down 4-0 going into the ninth. Freehan's Home run cleared the stadium making it an 8 run ninth for the win.

Are there any NBC baseball games from the 1970's--particularly 1974 and 1975--whether they were played on a Monday or a Saturday? One of those was the White Sox against the Yankees at Shea Stadium in 1974 (yes, Shea Stadium--Yankee Stadium was too busy being remodeled as a new park to begin in 1976)!

Oh no way..there are very few actual game footage that exist around this era (70s thru early 80s) then VCRs came about and not too many people/fans recorded games..one guy from Terra Haute did record games (WGN and Network game like NBC etc) but very few others.. This 1972 game is on Kinescope when games were filmed basically right off the broadcast..a process done in those games when videotape wasn’t saved or recorded..there are some more Kinescope reels I have (2 or 3 more) I’ll be adding at a later date once I clean them up including audio corrections..but the game your looking for does not exist trust me 🎥

Orioles traded Frank Robinson after 71 season and it hurt them, combined with the fact that the team got suddenly old. Brooks Robinson, Buford, and Dave Johnson all had very poor years in 72. The rookies---Baylor Grich and Johnny Oates helped them considerably. Gowdy mentioned that Orioles BA at the time was last in the league.
