Hot tip: draw the extremes and breakdowns and leave blank frames between them to get a sense of movement. Don’t do the inbetweening. Clean the extremes and breakdowns then do the inbetweening with clean lines. It saves so much time and stops animation from being choppy if you’re not very good at cleaning.

Excuse me, with "cleaning" the extremes and breakdowns, do you mean making a lineart that looks smooth and in a single line rather than a sketch? And if it's the case, how can you draw the inbetweening with the clean lines from the start? I think I would do messy lines first like a sketch

I studied animation and no one had EVER mentioned copying and pasting parts directly from the model sheets onto your animation draft to make staying on model easier. This is honestly such a game-changer tutors should be legally obliged to talk about it lol

Because it's not a good habit, you should draw each frame independently and rely less on copy pasting.

⁠​⁠​⁠@@peph9750 Idk what kind of school the ogc went to, but using copy and paste in animation was taught to me on year one. There’s a quote my teacher uses “It’s a tool just as anything else in animation is.” And “It depends on the animator if they can make it work, not on the tool”. With your point you should never depend on ANY tool in animation not just copy and paste. I could say “Keyframes are a bad habit” because so much animation depends on it, but I don’t, because saying something in animation is a “bad habit” when it’s working, and looks good is the stupidest thing I’ve heard for a while. And if someone can’t animate without a specific technique or a tool: Never blame a technique, but always blame the user.

Here's to remembering the first animation class where I created the classic bouncy ball animation and thought, "I'm going to make as many frames as possible to make this as smooth as possible." Pressed play and watched my ball snail down the screen... my professor didn't stop me. He wanted me to learn on my own, and then gave me extra time to complete the assignment, as he clearly predicted the inevitable failure. And gosh, I appreciate it. Learning through misstep keeps the lessons in my brain.

Lip syncing and acting is hard. I strongly recommend starting out with little 2-3 second gifs. Just get used to doing drawing 2 key poses and some inbetweens. 20 seconds sounds short, but it’s a lot of work.

@@sloppynyuszi I know, and I'm starting to realize that as I go along. And actually, I did make some small animations before, but I didn't mention those because I never finished most of them. The only one I did finish was a bouncing ball. The 20s thing is just something I push myself to do because I want to challenge myself when it comes to longer things, and learn the kind of pitfalls I fall into when animating a longer sequence. For example, while the first few seconds of rough key frames were pretty consistent, I noticed that I tend to make the character's head smaller as I go on, so I know to look out for that in the future! It's more of a learning experience I strive for, as of now.

I feel like tracing the model is a good thing, even in art. It helps get the proportions right, and eventually you won't need them because of how many times you've drawn that character.

As someone who once was absolutely clueless and lost while doing animation, these tips are seriously helpful as a newbie (who may never even touched animation ever, I'd say) :' ) When I started getting back into animation in 2017, I was basically lost and kept questioning "how does one even animateeeee?!?!", but once I looked into some animation techniques as well as found out about the 12 principles of animation, it helped me sooo much into getting started with animation and helped me get a better understanding of how it all works/is put together, just a matter of practice from now and developing/learning more techniques (one key change for me was shifting away from pose-to-pose to straight ahead for each body part), and now I'm even amazed I can call myself a decent animator, got people and friends to say my animations look like Kekeflipnote's stuff, and getting 1st place for an advertisement contest (where I decided to animate the full thing for fun lol), and I don't animate regularly either (don't do that though, gotta keep going :o) so that's quite an achievement :' ) oh PS: smear frames are the best things ever to make

I had a class at Santa Barbara City College by a former Disney animator. Learning to animate this way, i.e. traditionally, is very useful even when you move on to CG or rigged animation. Look at Into The Spider-verse. It’s a CG film but it looks like a 2D one because it has all of these principles in it

This video is so good, and is now one of my fave animation tutorials behind Alan Becker’s 12 principles of animation! I’ve made some small animations like a goo jumping (basically a ball bouncing but I added eyes-) and a cat loaf with just the tail moving and an ear flicking. I guess now I follow what you said about doing other small practices and build up to a walking cycle, thank you! I’m also doing an animatic, since I figured it would be good practice with less pressure to make everything clean. My brain needs my imaginings to be brought to life, but as a beginner, I dont want to immediately jump into clean animation that lasts a whole song and get burnt out. I just started animating with smear frames and this really helped. Thx! My way of practicing animation is posting it as videos so my subscribers can tell me anything about the animation. Then there I am at home, imagining some more animations and stuff, also practicing my imaginative movement off my couch. I jump off it bc its bouncy enough for a jump movement :D But this video can actually help me in what my animation looks like. I was already practicing smear frames on my newest animation that i'm still making. I can't wait for y'all to see it! 58 frames on the animation so far, using 6fps lets my eyes develop to what I'm seeing. I might practice better fps soon, and yeah. I was also trying to do anticipation for my smear frames too. My smear frames usually have a little anticipation and mostly just squash and stretch animation, sometimes I use actual smear frames.

Thank you so much for this video! These tips help a lot. As I practice animation only on my free time, I am glad to know that it takes time because it takes time... I thought I was too slow (therefore, too incompetent) to animate. When you guys tell that you took several months to animate that character properly, it just makes sense to me. Really helpful and inspiring.
