I think this is Spike Lee's greatest piece of art. It gives you all the good and the bad of Spike Lee as a writer/director and like any piece of great art, you have to wrestle with it. Whether you hate it or love it, you're 100% correct and that's how great art should be. I hold my criterion blu ray as the pinnacle of my motion picture collection. I also think that "Get On The Bus" is an absolute banger as well (I went to the million man march myself in 95).

Hi Tyra! I love how you explain the parallels between historical minstrel shows and modern day minstrel shows such as what we saw in the film and what we see today. I think it's sad that to this day many Black people are willing to sell their souls for money. You would think something would have changed in the 23 years since this film was released, but nope. Just sad. Thank you for another great review.

This was my most favorite review you did sis! No lies told in the commentary being a relative of Sidney Poitier a lot of what you have said was spoken about him though not in black face and also criticized by black folks for not being black enough. Thank you for being honest in this review Spike went deep on this one and it went over ppls heads but I think a review like yours and a rewatch of the movie could open the eyes of a lot of ppl who didn't get it then❤

This film was prescient about where pop culture was going the same way Network predicted Fox News and A Face in the Crowd predicted entertainers as political figures and would-be demagogues (Spike even dedicated Bamboozled to the writer of Face in the Crowd). I think Damon Wayans was perfect casting because of his behind the scenes experiences with In Living Color. As Keenan’s main co-writer who had to sit in on all those battles with censors, you just know he probably met plenty of Dunwittys in his day. I get a feeling he drew a lot from that experience.

Like most. The first time I watched it I was too young to truly understand what the movie was trying to say. But then I watched it again some years later and automatically saw the point of it. I knew all along what the message was I just didn’t understand it until I started seeing those very things go on around me. Today we have people like Sukiana, Sexy Red, the City Girls, the dancing gorilla looking dude, and countless tik tokers who have little to no talent but make a mockery of being black and produce it for the world to see! Spike is a lot of things but people better make sure to always call him a genius first!

I remember discussing “Gone With The Wind” with a POC schoolmate and she loved laughing at the Black people in that movie. I was taken aback because I was raised to honor Hattie McDaniel and Butterfly McQueen as trailblazers… “Bamboozled” taught me a thing or two about representation vs recognition and self-satire vs exploitation and I started watching movies and TV through new eyes. Blackface is the creepiest thing I've seen in my lifetime, I've watched some old movies way back then, and sometimes I do see the stereotypes of black people in the very older movies and it's very disturbing and nightmare fueled by seeing it. Fr for me before I even knew the historical context, when I saw older movies with blackface I always had an uneasy feeling from it. Sorta the same feeling I got when I saw the man in “Them” , like just ignoring the black scleras and the racism in the show, I got that sneaking feeling of disgust and avoidance. That same feeling I had as a kid seeing blackface, not even knowing what it meant, it never felt RIGHT.

What's amazing to me is how we ( black people) perpetuate whatever we're told about ourselves. First we were slow, lazy and buffoons. Then we were pimps hoes and savages. Next was criminals and thugs. Now we've cycled back to the beginning with the tiktok minstrel shows, it's just disappointing

Basically, this is Spike's personal middle finger to Hollywood and entertainment inc at the time (and to an extant today) It ain't my place, but this is basically what this movie is Arguably aside from the actual minstrel show itself and the overall message, the ending compilation of old racist movies and cartoons is one of the most memorable parts of the film. Somehow, he even got a clip from the live action segments of Song of the South. (Incase some don't know, Song of the South is Disney's 1940s film adaptation of the brer rabbit folktales. Cause almost every movie they made is based on a public domain story. It was infamous for basically taking place on a plantation in Georgia (one of the states the original stories came from) and showed happy black slaves. The actor who played Uncle Remus despite winning an Oscar, wasn't even allowed to watch the very movie he starred in all cause of Jim Crow)

Tommy Davidson has an underrated performance and his dramatic scene (fighting with Savion's character) should have been awarded-- it seemed cut for a nomination, "for your consideration, etc." Those horns still depress me 20 years later. I did a presentation for school to ruin their whole day. Oddly, we thought that English elective class would have become core curriculum by now; it was called Media Literacy. _It's not bad knowing most local elections are decided by 15% of their electorate, for example_

I'm not black I'm not even american, but it's good to have a movie like this as cautionary tale of how racism is Very much a thing in modern society, how old stereotypes can easily come back if normalized. With that being said the only thing in the video I was kinda iffy about was when you showed the TikTok of the Black man wearing a maid costume dancing because I think you kinda missed the point with that one given the fact that as far as I understand it he wears that outfit as a way to parody anime, maybe I'm wrong but that's how I always interpreted it. I think someone like I show speed would probably have illustrated your point better given the fact that he definitely acts like a caricature . Again I might be wrong and I don't mean to be disrespectful that's Just me sharing my vision. Thank you for this amazing review.

I remember an episode of A Different World tried to tackle this sensitive topic, Whitley found out that her ancestors owned slaves and little Ms.Jada Pinkett as Lena was on her neck and disgusted with Whitley until Mr. Gaines explained it away, Kimberly was offended and insecure about the performances until again Mr. Gaines helped her through her conflicts. I don't really remember what the boys were doing for a majority of the episode, but I know they hurt Kim's feelings with the yo momma is so fat/ugly/black jokes... Even though the actors and writers tried to shine a good light on this dark and misguided/miseducated aspect of black history and culture, it still rubbed me the wrong way. I feel like there is too much negativity in black face for me to acknowledge it in any positive light, but that's just me. Wonderfully deep and thoughtful review as always 😊.
