Great Vid ! Honestly nothing has changed for us as a small farm.... even as just end users still nothing has changed. We love the cloud service and slicer and and app the hardware speaks for itself. It just works! Even the response to the bed cord drama was pretty amazing compared to every other printer maker.

As a fellow (but much much smaller) print farm and etsy shop owner, I have the same perspective for now as well. They work, I use Bambu Studio, I use Orca sometimes to try out new features, but so far everything I've liked from Orca has come to Bambu (like scarf seams) my business runs on these printers, their reliability has been proven to me, so unless they do something that harms my use-case, I don't have a reason to do much else with them. I'm actually one of the few ppl I think looking forward to what they've hinted at running a more farm centric app. I just found out Bambu studio can do multiple printer job running without having to send each job to one printer and that was a game changer for me when I had a big run recently. Some of my products are 5 color 0.2mm nozzle prints and though some competitors are creeping up on them, I'm quite content with my little farm of X1Cs, and spare parts I've hoarded. Also is that spool with the RFID stuck to the plastic like new new new? I get shipments around once per week, usually 5-10 spools and refills at a time and haven't seen that yet. I did buy a spool of that new basic green because it looks like Ryobi green, so I'll have to see if mine has that too.

the problem is especailly with the A1 series, when you get the pop up on the machine, there is not "wait" option. You only get the confirm option. With the X1 update currently they can backdate the firmware at least. But those printers also can just close the popup about it if they over the air update comes up for them. A Series firmware havent been pushed yet.

I've only seen a few videos about this whole ordeal and haven't really checked any of it out myself. I have toyed with the idea of getting a 3d printer just for my own personal use. I'm not much of a tinkerer or modifier of most products I use, but I've been burned in the past buying products that are setup to require an internet connection back to the company for normal use, or they're locked down to a specific piece of software. I do my best to avoid that now because one day they will probably decide to stop updating software to support a new OS or heaven forbid they go out of business and shut their servers down. If I ever decide to get a 3d printer I will most likely opt for an open product that can use generic software and allow me to print directly to it with no approval from Big Brother required. I hope they never do anything that messes you up Sam. You seem like a genuinely great guy with a great family. Keep up the good work 👍

My first bambu printer, XiC is coming in late February, my first any 3D printer and yes I bought it after the security update announcement. I am 57, retired. I went with the best printer of 2024. I am sure it will be outdated by 2026, but it is fine for a hobby and possible business model for me. I bought it also to have that Apple guardrail so I can focus on the prints. Sam well done on all topics. Have you moved your filament dryer so you load from the right to avoid the door?

Finally an influencer who's not actually souting drivel about it all. As you said the printers have never been sold as a replacement for the ender 3 (Even if they are in that price bracket), also why would they purposely want to cause issues for print farm owners it'll loose them ALOT of money in the long run. I love my P1S after coming from Ender3's as much as I enjoyed the tinkering with them and learning how 3D printers worked, having the P1S where I can stick my model in bambu studio tweak the settings to how i want it and hit send and wait till it's finished (for the most part things do fail) it's like a breath of fresh air.

I think you bring up a good point with waiting, if you have the printer there is already a work around. If you dont have it, wait and see what happens or go with a different company if it concerns you. Honestly the biggest issue I could see coming is only being able to use their filament but that is all speculation based on what other companies have done (HP)

What I heard about the update notice, was that they implied your future prints may not proceed unless you do the update. I also heard it was related to using 3rd party slicers instead of Bambu's slicer. I have not verified either - just commenting on what another video was saying. I don't currently have a 3d printer but am seriously considering getting a Bambu.

Sam, I’m exactly like you. I have used other Printers in the past for my work, and I have now moved over to Bambu Lab because I am tired of being a technician or slave to a 3D Printer. At work I need to send the job to the Printer and forget about it. I don’t want to worry about a lot of things pre-print & during the print. In this day and age I create the model, import it, check it, hit print and do other jobs while my model is printing. The print job is part of my job but tinkering, and watching and worry about the print cannot be all my job which it was in the past. I look at my 3D Printer like a Toaster….I want it to do one thing, over and over again well….do I want to have to be a Scientist, a mechanic or a technician just to have the Toast cook? No. It’s 2025. I need the Printer for work. I have to be an expert in the end product. I don’t or shouldn’t need to be an expert on settings and any black arts temperamental outcomes of a 3D machine. I don’t have time for that. Bambu Labs can mess with the software or firmware all they like or bring out bigger and better machines, but I’m so happy with the set and forget functionality of Bambu Lab that allows me to focus on other parts of my job. Tools should work for you. Not you working for tools. Bambu Lab allows me less stress and the ability to focus on the other important parts of my job. I’m a fan of Bambu Lab now having done a few years with garbage printers and companies and I ain’t going back! Good video 👍

I was a bit dismayed after reading comments online when Bambu Lab first announced. I had just ordered a couple of P1S units & was awaiting delivery. I pondered cancelling my order, but then decided to give it a try. After setup of one & running a few test prints, I can say that I'm very pleased with the unit. No other 3D printer that I've used (both home & work) has been this easy & reliable. I don't think that I'll every grow as much as you, Sam, so the closed system aspect may never be an issue for me - regardless of what path Bambu Lab takes in the future. Thanks for uour input - I was wondering what Sam thought!

Sam, thanks for the video. I remember you saying that Orca Slicer fixed print issues for you. If you end up losing direct printing control from Orca Slicer ( that is currently what it sounds like ) how will that impact your print farm? Will you export to .3mf files from Orca Slicer and get them to your printers by other means like the "Bambu Connect app"? Maybe, this is what the print farm software they are working on will do, take a set of sliced .3mf files and let you push them to whatever machines you want in one go? Just wonder since I have heard you talking about the reason you switched to Orca Slicer. I guess it is possible that Bambu Studio was updated and you have switch back to using it.

Thank you for your mature and curated point of view, Speaking as an individual, I REAAALLY hate what Bambu did. Thinking as a business, it will work as long as it generates the money needed for the business. Sadly there is no real replacement for Bambu printers, I won't buy one, but I have to agree that they just work. Creality is trying, but they are still in this stupid game of dropping a new model every week and leaving behind any failures of the previous models, not really learning from them. Heck... I really hate Apple, but I purchased and iPad just to play load it with a lot of Virtual Music Instruments just because there is no other device on the market that can do what it do, and as long as it works for my music, I will keep it running, and yes, I don't upgrade it very often because apple tends to F-up too.

There was no confusion - they silently updated TOS and website before publishing the 2nd blog post, so their "reinvented" security argument can stand any ground. That is the real issue - complete lack of any transparency or accountability. As for "sam" and print farm benefits - today, you can get a LOT of benefits as many print farm managers support what you have. Tomorrow, you will either take bamboo offering or get rekt - that's not really a good spot to be in as a business, but it's ultimately your choice.

It's the same thing with my Glowforge. Could I have bought a laser cutter that was more "tinkerable"? Of course! Am I capable of tinkering? Absolutely! But I wanted a laser cutter that just worked out of the box to see if I even liked it. Same with 3D Printing. I have a Prusa and I bounce between slicers for it. I have an Elegoo Resin Printer and I use their slicer for that. I have an A1 and A1 Mini and I use the specific slicer for those. The Prusa requires a lot more tinkering than the A1s and I'm fine with that, but there are times I just want the printer to work. 😀

I was well aware Bumbu was a closed ecosystem. I, like you, just wanted a printer that just worked. It's not what Bambu is doing that upsets me, it's what they could be planning to do. If I'd known Bambu planned to take away stuff, I wouldn't have bought into their ecosystem in the first place. There is a simple solution to the claimed security issue. Let me send my stuff over my network to my printer directly. Let me use my network to monitor my prints. Bambu is bending over backwards to force me to use their servers, the only reason to do that is to limit and control my use. That's it, that's all! So why is Bambu going out of the way to do that? What's in it for them? The only "security" Bambu is worried about is securing future profits.
@deechvogt15894 сағат бұрын
Agreed. They don't look out for the consumer. They look out for their investors. I will remain vigilant but if they start taking away or charging for features that were available without charge when I bought the printer then I am out. Bambu was my 3d first printer but won't be my next 3d printer.

@@a9ball1 yes, companies exist to make money. But they cant alter how a product functions AFTER someone has purchased it. Thats referred to as bait and switch. I don't think what they are referring to as "security updates" is a valid answer, however I also feel that for the vast majority of people who choose Bamboo it won't have much if any impact. I am curious to see how it impacts folks like yourself (why I watched this video) in the long term. I don't manage a print farm, I don't know what software is out there for it, or how it interfaces with differing brands of printers, but I personally would be concerned about being locked into one choice. Having said that you could probably guess I'm one of those folks who prefers the tinkering and playing with my printer as much as I enjoy printing with it so being locked into an ecosystem is not something I want, no matter how easy they make it. I will say this (puts on tinfoil hat) I do worry about Bamboo doing a rug pull and starting to charge monthly fees for stuff. Their printers always felt like they were priced too low for them to be making money on, they are high quality machines that helped make bleeding edge tech in 3D printing the norm, and it never felt like the price reflected that. (takes off tinfoil hat). I have no real basis for this happening, I have just witnessed it enough in other projects in my career that start offering things cheap/free at the start and then once they have market saturation they start charging for updates/access/whatever so it concerns me. Looking forward to a followup once more news drops and the dust settles!

The issue is, they sold the X1-C machines with certain features, that includes the ability to use third party software like Orca Slicer via the API directly talking to their machines. After you purchase YOUR machine, Bambu is removing features via firmware updates under the guise of security, reducing the functionality and utility of YOUR machine. If the likes of Bambu aren't held to account for abhorrent actions like these, then why are we OWNING these machines, we may as well rent them, because we don't actually OWN them......

First the phrase "Bambu labs is not open source" have been so misused and misunderstood in this whole debate. It drives me nuts when people say, "what did you think they are not open source"..... Not being open source does not mean you are automatically locked into, in hindered in any way to use the product, or that it should be ok for them to change how we are allowed to used OUR purchased product after it was sold. People also keep referring to Apple, again it has nothing to do with open source or not. What if Apple suddenly launched an update that would prohibit you from using other browsers, or other e-mail apps then their own on your phone. Would you be ok it?

This is not even close to being the “Apple” when they built everything off the open source stuff, even down to the firmware. Their slicer is nearly a direct copy of Prusa Slicer, except that you have to upload through their servers.

Do you think their new rules will affect people's ability to upgrade things like the P1S small screen to a larger screen size?
@BigFx3 сағат бұрын
All those touch screen upgrades are using MQTT and/or cloud connect, and not really "replacing' the screen with new wiring. Unsigned apps will not be able to send jobs or commands to the printer (read only, and not even all data), and MQTT will not work unless you switch on developer mode (which disables the cloud). So once the update for P1x hits, it basically means deciding between your hardware working or having cloud capability (ie, getting push messages on your phone about error or finished print...)

It looks to me like they’re taking away features that they don’t need to, to artificially lock things down, which may benefit print farms in some way, but I think it’s shady for the average individual consumer. I love how mine print but I also like modifying/improving things. The OrcaSlicer issue really does bother me, since Bambu Studio is based on open source software. It looks to me like hey’re band-aiding a poor cloud infrastructure that was never truly secure in the first place and still won’t be after the lockdown. Lemontron’s “Developer Mode” video on it was a great watch!

I'm sure you'd see me as worked up and an old timer, but if you're open to listening, please allow me a moment. What they've disguised as "security" is not security. If you go through one of the deep dive videos (which unfortunately none of the videos you linked are security experts), you'd find that the security concerns they outline are pretty ridiculous and far fetched. For me the issue is not that I want to tinker, I don't. The issue for me is that they're changing the entire basis of the product I've already purchased. Yes I use Bambu studio, yes I enjoy the positives of the somewhat closed system. When I bought my A1 it was clear to me that I could connect to it with a slicer like Orca if I so chose. I liked that flexibility. They're now changing the terms of the sale in my opinion by fundamentally changing how I have to interface with the printer. I don't _think_ the sky is falling and that it is time to CANCEL bambu, but please don't encourage the rhetoric of villainizing those that are sounding the alarm. They are speaking up and trying to hold a company accountable. We all benefit from that. We should ask questions. We should call out BS when we see it. And we should demand answers when companies remove functionality from products we've already purchased.

Apple users have accepted that they can't just do what they like with their products, we can't even upgrade our memory once we have purchased our Macs etc. What we buy is basically something that works well and this is why Apple charge a premium. Bambu Lab is no different. I love my A1 and A1 Mini and have no reason to think that anything will change for me. I only ever use Bambu Studio, and generally only buy Bambu filament because they just work - something Steve Jobs always said about Apple products. Well said Sam 🙂

I've heard a similar take elsewhere, and I'm still not sold on it. I also bought my Bambu because I wanted it to just work. It's done that beautifully. But the architecture for Bambu Connect puts Bambu in a position where they have the potential to control what I do with my printer. It's less about them taking offensive action in this step, and more that this step enables them to setup vendor lock-in. The scenario I'm worried about is: 1. Bambu continues to grow market share, and becomes the true Apple of 3D printing. 2. Either a competitor comes out with a better product (Filament, AMS, Slicing software) or Bambu's quality starts to slip. 3. They start losing their market share. 4. They pull the lever to restrict Bambu printers to Bambu branded consumables and lock out 3rd party products (slicers and MMUs) 5. People put up with the crappy quality because they already have Bambu printers and they're popular 6. Bambu continues to ship crappy stuff. I don't like having my hands tied like that. If Bambu Connect isn't open sourced so it can be forked and replaced, I won't buy another Bambu printer, and I'll start diversifying to other brands. It's not because I want to mod my hardware, it's because it feels like Bambu is starting to close the exit doors. To be clear, they haven't closed them, and there's nothing overtly problematic happing right now, so the sky is not falling. But the way Bambu Connect is architected, it makes it possible for them to close the door sometime later. I don't like them having that type of control. The security enhancement is nice. No fault there. The issue isn't with the security, it's how it's implemented. LAN Mode and Developer mode do get around this, as long as they don't take those away later. All that to say, this puts Bambu in too much control. They have that right, but as long as they claim that much control, I'll move elsewhere.

Sam, I tried to mine crypto with video cards, they kept burning up, the wiring and the plugs to the wiring, it was a waste. Takes a year or more to pay for the equipment. Then profit year two.

Is Bambu only a new version of a Da-vinci ? I am not against Bambu because i dont have and wont have one ! I am not in an emergency when printing and i dont see a difference in quality so big to warant a change , except the speed that i dont need The thing that i dont like is paying something that is not mine exactely the same thing that happend with Da-vinci !

You may want to check out Louis Rossman’s videos (there were 3 of them). Louis is a right to repair guy and consumer advocate. He has some interesting views. 24 printers x monthly subscription is going to get expensive… if that’s the way it goes…

I don't think what Bambu Lab is doing is going to hurt you at all. They are probably going to make there software work even better. But, me, I will stick with Prusa.

security reasons... meh... we can handle our own network security right? It's like your car manufacturer changing the lock on your garage door because they fear that your car might get stolen. And if you add aftermarket seats, they will instantly disable the key and leave the garage door locked until you get those seats out again.

Its completely ok not to freak out. If you use exclusively Bambu stuff, this is also not something to worry, at least not for some time. However, 2 thing here needs to be recognized and I really dont see it in this video. 1) features are removed/locked that were there when (some) bought the orinters, so retroactuvely. And that is very different from just plain locking it down prior to selling. 2) "Security" improvements are 100% fake. Anybody in IT security will tell you that there are many more systems of securing pronters and networks than the one chosen by BL (middle-man software) which clearly i dicates something else is a motivation for this. In fact, with crippling LAN mode (and partially BL connect) security of your printers and local network go down with this.

2 things if you use the printer and just Bambu studios like a lot of us probably Sam included you don’t lose anything. 2 a few IT guys have come out and named the few new security features and that you saying it’s fake is also false.

I hope that Bambu is smart about their choices going forward, otherwise they will likely fade away like many before. Their design isn't what I'd call original, but they brought it all together by being easy, fast, quality and affordable. But other companies have already followed close behind while being open source. Given this latest ordeal, I'd be willing to bet that companies like Bigtreetech are working on drop in replacement control boards that will retain all the current features and maybe add more while open source with klipper. But you might put your bambus on a seperate router and turn it off when not needed, they've forced updates middle of the night before. But we'll see what happens.

While I know it makes me a bad person in many people's eyes I do believe in being honest and blunt. I have ZERO sympathy for anyone who gets caught up in this bambu nonsense. It was clear years ago that this was in the making and anyone who bought into the ecosystem has to shoulder the blame for their own choices. Many simple said "but they are so easy to use and they print great" without looking at exactly what they were getting themselves into. Even the basic laws the ccp places on chinese companies should have been enough of a warning, but sadly in today's day and age far too many people are willing to just walk away from their freedom for minor convenience. I don't WISH people to get into trouble for their choice but I'm not going to shed a tear for them either. Everyone has the right to make their own choices but with that comes the obligation to suffer the consequences in silence.

I bought my X1 Carbon with AMS and when I did, I knew it was a closed system.. but , I do have nothing but Mac's in my home network of 6 computers so I'm used to closed architecture. Your explanation says it all. Bambu will NOT do something that will slit their own throat. If they do something and it hurts their sales, it will be quickly corrected.

Thank you. I was poised to order a P1S, (? I think that was the one, with the AMS system) once I heard the update controversy’s I paused, waiting for all the update information before I make the purchase.

IN MY HUMBLE OPPINION, the only people complaining are the die hards who love to tinker and fix. Aside from all the legal crap. and as an ex-tinkerer, I dont want to tinker. I dont want to have to upgrade and fight with my printers. I have several creality and sovol printers that were such a pain that they have been gathering dust since I replaced them with Bambu P1S printers which for the most part, have just worked and did so out of the box.SOME OF US WANT A TOASTER. Something simple that does what it says it does. If those complaining want a PROJECT, fine, go get one and leave the rest of us alone. With the number of idiot hackers out there, I think Bambu covering thier asses is a good thing. 3D printers can be dangerous. If someone hacks in because of crappy security and tells your printer to crank the bed and the nozzle to their highest temp and stay there, your house could burn down/ Then how will you feel. A little additional security is a good thing.

Is this all about the firmware updates and security? Why is everyone freaking out about it? I’d be 20 times more worried about the lawsuits in the patent infringement coming up from stratasys and it’s effect on the industry

I'm new to the Bambu party with A1 combos. Do I like what happened? Absolutely not! Will I buy more A1's if I need to increase output? Absolutely. They do just work as you say. I'll simply use them in LAN mode. I have decided not to order a P1S that was planned and will look elsewhere.

Thanks for the video Sam! I’m like you, I’m not going to worry until I have a reason to! Bambu Lab wants to remain the market leader and that means happy customers. We’ll just speak up if things get bad! 😁😄

Just getting interested in 3D printing and appreciate your business-based perspective, though I have no intentions of starting a business myself. I think your overview of the situation was terrible, missed several key points, was too easy on Bambu’s new policies and public responses, and wrongly focused too heavily on the “tinkering” aspect. However, you are correct, most companies are just that, companies. I agree and support that Apple, Google, Microsoft, etc. create products for us to consume so that their company can grow and make money. However, let’s not pretend that they are our friend, family, or doing things altruistically for us. Almost 100% of the time, when a business changes their TOS, it is not to benefit consumers. I may not know 3D printing, but I know a bit about both cybersecurity and software development. Much like congressional bills with 15 unrelated riders snuck in under the radar, there’s no better way to lock down, exploit, or take control of system than under the guise of a firmware or security update. That said, I’m really interested in your perspective as a 3D print farm owner and would like to see if you end up affected by the changes, negatively or positively.

I’ve only got 3. But I’m doing what Sam is doing. No sense in getting all bent out of shape. Yet. And you may not have to deal with it at all. Saying that. I’d be more worried if I had Sam’s volume of printers. With only 3, the worst that can happen to me is offloading them and replacing them. That’s the worst that can happen. I don’t think k it will come to that but with that in mind I’m going with business as usual til I start having issues with any changes.

I’m with you on this one Sam. There’s no reason yet to get all crazy and wound up. They announced something and I have not seen lots of people with large BambuLab Print Farms start wholesale swapping them out. I personally own two BambuLab X1Cs and they are tools that I use in my hobby (now turned small business). If the company changes how I can use that tool, then I find a new source for the tool. If the tool continues to meet my needs, then why change anything. Keep it up Sam, and thank you for the videos and the laid back, level headed mindset you bring to things.

I have a small little all Bambu farm, I make some products for the Golf Sim industry and added 2 more a1 printers to the room today. I Really enjoy your content and info, as a old farmer from the Abacus generation! I bought them because they work, don't have time to be fixing and building them anymore. That was when it was a hobby for me! Thanks Again!
