Flip the model over so the front is on the build plate and use a textured pei plate. Your front surface will look great.

Couldn't you do this faster by painting it when it was split into pieces and then assemble afterwards? To me that is faster as it cuts out about a minute of the steps in this video but am I missing something? Also, wouln't this cause one of two issues, either too many material changes or an ability to see through the filament if you don't choose to just paint the top 1 mm?
@ashleys3dprintshop
@ashleys3dprintshop Жыл бұрын
There are many ways to do this. I reassemble after a "split into objects" so folks don't accidently move a piece before reassembly. If you are careful they may not be an issue but these steps are for beginners so I aim for reduction of potential issues. SVG files can "punish" your AMS with many filament changes if painted incorrectly. The big print was about 9 filament changes. white over black could come out grey if there isnt enough layers so it depends on your model height and ultimate goal. So for instance if you split into parts you have to click on each part and paint individually. There are about 40 parts and 40 entries into the paint tool. Which arguably could take longer and we are assuming new users do not move a single piece by accident or make a mistake in the object process tab. If you are assembled you can paint, the top few layers, and entire model in one pass. If you split into parts or paint using the "number keys" you will have filament changes every layer. The big one was 5 layers high "Top layers" only 22 grams 2.88 flushed 9 filament changes 45min print Change every layer 24g used 5grams flushed 16 filament changes 1hr 4 min For a simple print it's not a big deal but for more complex prints it can get crazy. 😅 This covers it a little better kzbin.info/www/bejne/aau8laSLqbuUaas using a 10mm high model. The print time explodes from 1 hr to 3 and uses much more filament per layer and way more filament changes. But in the end there is no wrong answer as long as the model meets your needs. Thank you for the suggestion.

what if you dont want base layer/color, but 2 sided??
@ashleys3dprintshop
@ashleys3dprintshop Ай бұрын
There are a couple of ways to think about it. 1. You can paint both sides, fill bucket makes it simple. (ideal) 2. You can paint using the number key (not ideal) I personally don't like to make too many filament changes per layer as it adds to the print time if you have a thicker model. So if you think of this like a 5 layer poker chip ------color layer----- ------black base----- ------black base----- ------black base----- ------color layer----- vs ------color layer----- ------color layer----- ------color layer----- ------color layer----- ------color layer----- This video goes over how svg files are handled. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aau8laSLqbuUaas I will warn you the latest version of bambu studio completely breaks how this works so I would either avoid updating or keep an older version around.

Thank you for kind words. There is a several ways to convert to a SVG file(like vectorizer.ai) and you can change their levels/height independently in the slicer. From there you can paint them too. I'll try to make a video showing the steps. You will see a common theme in my videos where I paint the top layers do save on filament and print time but you can paint them a few different ways. There is are several painting options. "circle" spot color (surface) "Sphere" makes a similar circle but penetrates the model Triangle. Similar to circle with surface painting, Most models are made of triangles so it's a more granular painting option. **Height range paints on a "plane" paints all the way through a model (this would be the one you want)you can define the range Fill (i call paint bucket) but paints an entire section as defined by angle Fill gap. just fills in gaps with the color selected using predefined values.

@@ashleys3dprintshop Let's try this reply again as I lost my last one! Super explanation on the paint options in Bambu Studio(BS). In BS I see how to adjust the Z axis layer height by typing in a value. It looks like the only way to set/adjust the the Z axis position of a layer is using the up/down arrows? U cannot set an absolute Z axis value? In UR videos have U shown how to do this? So it becomes tricky combining multiple layers. TinkerCAD maybe the best solution to set an absolute layer height? I like the CENTER option in BS to align the different layers. When combining layers must U embed each layer into the previous one or just have it touching for it to print correctly? Will BS give a warning message if not correct? Doing a little research it looks like INKSCAPE maybe the best software to use for creating a multiple layer SVG file from a PNG based upon colors per layer? It is important to have a SOLID first layer to print the other layers on. So the first layer is a combination of ALL the layers above where U want to print. Then each succeeding layer is also a combination of the layers above. U can't print in free space and have it stick together! My layer separation project is on butterflies. In Printables.com I have downloaded several multi-layer butterfly prints. Excellent prints. There is a butterfly house nearby and I have taken many photos that I want to 3D print and upload to Printables, giving back something to the community. Looking forward to UR video on how to do this quick and easy! THANKS David

How long does it take to print. I'm an industrial designer and artist, I have been considering using the ams as a business tool. The question is how fast is it, from what I have seen elsewhere. Larger models seem to take 5 times longer in multicolor. I would be better off printer and painting or printing and assembling separately if that's the case.
@ashleys3dprintshop
@ashleys3dprintshop 6 ай бұрын
@@dwintster printing via the ams can either be relatively quick or paingfully slow depending on your model. Each color change adds about 60-90 per color change. So simple 5 color swap may be about 10 at worst. But if you are changing colors multiple times a layer the overall print time will explode. There are several mitigations steps. Larger layer height for the whole model or parts. (Reducing the overall number of layers at the expense of detail in the z height) Changing colors for ”blocks of areas” Think of a flag straight 🇩🇪 flag where you may only have a few changes total. Reducing purge amounts can speed up the color swaps but by a few seconds but the time savings compounds. Painting is an option but I recommend post processing like sanding / priming the painted area first

@ashleys3dprintshop thanks for the detailed response. I'm all too familiar with the painting process I had used it on every prototype I built throughout my degree in Industrial Design and at my internships on 3d printed parts and handcrafted alike to get a great surface finish. I would rather not paint things when possible since it dramatically increase the cost of production. Though it's something to consider in the design phase. There is nothing like dry and wet sanding and patching with bondo and car body filler before spray painting with a lacquer based paints with a clear coat on top. (Your paint job is only as good as the surface finish underneath.) Though I have had a lot of experience with 3d printing, it's been SLS and SLA at work, I decided to go with fdm because I didn't want to deal with the toxic chemicals at home. (I have very little experience with fdm.) Thanks again for explaining everything in detail. One more question, how much of a difference do nozzle sizes make? .6 for vase mode.2 for sculptures. Is there a drastic difference in quality?

Svg files are a bit different from STL files but they have some unique features. Not to throw you down a rabbit hole of videos but I created a few that can assist with SVG. I should ask which program did you use to create the SVG file (vectorizer) or another program/website. Also if the SVG has a bunch of "parts" it can be a pain to deal with until you reduce the number. I recommend simple graphics or items with *bold* lines and reduced colors/shading.

Greetings, when you painted the surface, does the filament color go down to all of the layers or just the surface? I tried that as an experiment a few days ago on a thicker model using white over blue and when I printed it, I saw some of the blue color filament underneath and the white was muddy looking. It was a single model and not made up of assembled parts from my CAD program (Autodesk Inventor 2024). Thank you!!
@ashleys3dprintshop
@ashleys3dprintshop Жыл бұрын
Thank you for commenting. It was just surface. I typically print that way to save on filament/number of color changes. You can easily run through a lot of filament coloring all the way through. You can color deeper with a combination of the paint layer or the sphere but it also depends on your model paint technique and angle of painting. Also some darker colors can kinda show through lighter colors. The hello kitty has a black base, white top but it is a slighly greyish white. More layers would correct that. ********************************* Sorry about the long response but this may be your answer******* Turn off purge to objects infill setting if you have it on. That will cause color issues with the infill showing through the surface layer. It uses a little more filament but looks much better. In bambu studio Others tab Flush Options Flush into objects infill (unchecked) Flush into objects' support can be checked.

@ashleys3dprintshop
@ashleys3dprintshop Жыл бұрын
Hello, thank you for your comment and question. I have upgraded my microphone and I didn't catch the issues since I lean more to treble(voice) on my speakers. If you have a bass heavy sound system voice does not come out as clear. As for the non-manifold edges. It has been described to me as breaking the laws of physics by having 2 items exist in the same space. Since we are looking at digital things the slicer will throw up the error but generally works it out. The slicer "knows" there is something there but will completely ignore it. That SVG file can be made of 10s to hundreds of parts that exist...and not exist if that makes sense. You can paint,remove, resize them too but they are a part of the model but can be ignored by the slicer. So if you look closely I only painted the top but when I printed the bottom is completely black. When we create a model the slicer expects every section to be "closed off" and it's own part. The SVG files are taking 2d images and making them 3d. You can see an outline of the hello kitty when run my mouse cursor over it but if I sliced without painting it will print completely flat. You wont even see the edges. When I separated the model into pieces I was able to remove the outer boarder and even the foot. You will see the error disappear but throw up "objects are to close" until I assembled them. You can run a repair if you like but If there is a couple of issues with that. 1. I can take a while to repair. Some models can take a very long time. 2. It will remove your coloring so run repair early in your work flow. I dont run the "repair" unless it's in certain circumstances. What I usually do is make my edits and slice normally. I check the model to make sure everything looks ok then print. If not I may run repair. Sorry about the long winded response. and thanks again for the kind words.
