as of right now, the CFW is boots off the SD card in the screen, so if you reboot with it not there, it`ll just run the normal OEM FW And for now, the bambuhandy app lets you revert the FW version to a compatible revision for the install itself......for now

Quite interesting, I didnt realize the Bambu printers are just running embedded Linux OS tho I guess that makes sense. I wonder if you can set higher bed and nozzle temps with this, I expect that you can 'unlock' the extra 20C nozzle that the X1E can do on the X1C. I just bought some QIDI PAHT-Cf filament that has recommended nozzle temp of 300C-320C and I wish I could get that extra bump.

If I understand it correctly then the jailbreak is not of the printer itself but of the touchscreen and controller? Hopefully this means BL should be more comfortable with people just adding functionality there, assuming the rest has some safeguards and most of their IP is in the ESP32 firmware... Not that it won't get dumped one day as well or grabbed from a firmware image once we have the keys. I wonder if this means the RFID encryption keys will be exposed as well? I wonder how this will play out, will we get proper X1 fakes from random Ali seller in a few months? Clones that work with Bambu cloud? Fake filament spools that were suspiciously cheap? This is what BL were afraid of.

Not possible, the linux is on the display only, meaning x1 has linux (even stated by bambu) while the p1 does not. Also the way that the bambu controls the steppers is different than on normal printers. The bambu does not have stepper drivers in a conventional sense. On a normal stepper driver, lets say a tmc2209, you have a chip that takes the input (uart, step/dir/enable, etc.) and with that information controls the mosfets. It also generates the sime curve for moving the stepper. On a bambu all that is done by the processor, this is also partially the reason why it has a 200mhz cpu for xyz motion. So even though you could probably install klipper on the display and mcu it would be pretty pointless as tge printer wont be able to do some thing.

⁠@@kilianlindlbauer8277 Why are you saying this like it’s completely impossible? Klipper does usually handle things differently, but it’s still possible to port the code. Linux has a direct communication line (for controlling all motors from the display, choosing the print file etc) with any of the proprietary chips like the on the toolhead, so there’s a way to control the printer with ported klipper, we just need to do it.

@@maka6000 you would need to replicate the stepper driving software as well as find out the pinout of the board. Not impossible, but how long does it take to get equal performance? What about the "lidar" scanner? Also, what about the p1 series? No linux there, youd need a sbc or similar. A1 series would be even more difficult as they use load cells for monitoring belt tension and resonance. Yet developers still struggle to implement strain gauge reading for nozzle probing and clog detection similar to what a prusa mk4 has. To my knowledge they even strapped a mk4 toolhead onto a voron test machine

Only 30 seconds in, so I apologize if this gets covered later in the video. Do you print a lot of ASA or ABS? The glass on your X1 looks pretty foggy. I've heard that ABS and ASA leave a film all over everything in the printer. I'm wondering if that is what that is from.

Petg does. I print 90% petg and there is a film on the glass I have to clean off every few weeks. That's why I run a HEPA & Carbon filter. FYI I have a Prusa in an enclosure.

Yes ABS/ASA leave a ton of condensate on the inside often the machine. This is also why you must periodically clean the carbon rails when printing ABS on the X1, or they start binding.

I wish we would get an update on this. I need to know how to get back to BL firmware if I'm having issues with the custom firmware. Some folks are saying they are being banned on some sites for even talking about this subject. I went back from 1.07.0 because the the BLLED controller would not work on that firmware and It was more important for me to have that feature than waiting for more information so I downgrading to 1.6.5. I know that the BLLED folks do have there controller firmware working on 1.07.01 at this time.

I believe the P-series printers don't have an SoC and don't run Linux. It is my understanding that all the "processing" work is done by an ESP32 of some kind. I think it will probably require significant effort to port this to the P-series printers. I have a P1P with P1S conversion kit. I would like an aftermarket firmware in order to heat the bed hotter than 100 C.

@@UnCoolDad using pybambu module that's part of the HA integration. Works in LAN only mode as that's how I run. Basically creates a virtual serial connection and virtual SD card to Bambi. Right now I have it uploading/listing/deleting files, monitoring temperatures, starting/pausing/canceling prints and got camera access using go2rtc that provides an hls stream for the control panel.

There are alternatives regarding the hardware alone. The software should be the only selling point left (besides the AMS for now) to consider Bambu Lab. If you just want an enclosed printer: get the K1. If it can be open for PLA: there is Sovol SV07 or even the Ender 3v3 Klipper version and others out there ...

@@hassosigbjoernson5738 according to many reviews the k1 has some print quality issues, or at least did at launch. Requiring print profile editing and other tinkering to get anywhere close to bambu quality. And as far as open printers I have a klipperized heavily modded ender 3. The draw to bambu lab is the price to performance aspect which from everything I've seen (which is quite a lot) is unmatched in any other machine. As well as the "it just works" ease of use factor. Furthermore no other printer, to my knowledge, offers a legit competitor to the AMS or AMS lite. Definitely not at the price of an x1c or a1/a1 mini. As I said the proprietary software/firmware and connection to Chinese servers is the biggest factor preventing myself, and from what I've seen many others, from considering these printers as their next daily. I'd honestly much prefer to build a voron or ratrig but when looking at the cost and amount of work, a bambu lab printer makes sense to come first and be used to print the required parts and to have a reliable backup when tinkering with a diy corexy machine. All just my 2 cents, maybe to you the printers you mentioned meet your needs and from your view the software is the determining factor, for me that isn't the case.

Im no software expert, but i can tell you that the printer is not running even a modified version of klipper. First it would require Linux, which is on the x1, but not p1 which runs a nearly identical firmware. Second even if you could install klipper on the x1 screen, get it to communicate over can/usb/uart with the mcu, flash that with klipper too and it would be entirely worthless. All the bambu printers dont have stepper drivers (yes, you heard right), the mcu directly controls the mosfets that would otherwise be controlled by some tmc chipset

You say that like this isnt what every single company would do. If Bambulab doesn't, people better throw respect on that, because they are 150% within their legal right to do so. You better pray and hope they simply open source, even if not with a permissive license.

This could be very interesting! For sueing others they maybe have to public code from their firmware to proof their work. I wonder how much code from Klipper actually is on that OG Bambu Lab firmware ... we'll see! =)

I am assuming the code is all open source software. This is the only way I would run a Bambu machine. I am not a big fan of black box software on the Bambu printers.

That's cool feature. Though i think your warranty will void instantly. Also that's a little bit against that bambu vibe where you just buy it and it works. On the other hand it gives great chance to create custom API for bambus, which opens a lot of possibilities. (automating stuff etc...) Running connecting Ethernet to it is also nice feature.

​@@xargon1234that could run afoul of copyright law, given that's proprietary code. The DMCA does have exemptions for "compatibility" I believe, but I'm unsure whether these cover making stuff just work on a competitors' machine.

Nero - this sounds crazy, but how do we downgrade the firmware? I had to borrow a phone to set my printers up a year ago, and have only used them via a PC and the bambu studio. I want to revert before it is no longer possilbe
