In Conversation: Jeffrey Deitch and Lawrence Rinder on Barry McGee

Watch BAM/PFA Director Lawrence Rinder and MOCA Director Jeffrey Deitch as they talk about Barry McGee's work in the context of international street art. Deitch presented groundbreaking installations by McGee at his Deitch Projects gallery in New York. Rinder is co-curator of Barry McGee, a major midcareer retrospective of the San Francisco-based artist, on view at BAM/PFA from August 24 to December 9, 2102.

I'm curious to know how much of the commercialization money and non-street cred money does Barry reject? I say this because it's accepted criticism for example, to point out those who take x money from x organization who's values don't align. I think I've heard from third party info that Barry doesn't believe in commercialization of his art. So just curious about this sentiment and topic. Running another art factory, with a crew producing the work to the artist's style, is pretty much the epitome of commercialization. Making it a party and giving them all beer doesn't change that in my mind.

I am still so suprised that such a clueless patron of art like Deitch is considered such a force in the art world? He looks like he dressed himself in the dark and has no style of any note. A man that dresses so awfully should not be able to comment on art. That is the starting point for any person with taste. He has the Emperors new suit!! Idiots will follow!
