I have a TC Contender chambered in 414 Elgin Gates Super-Mag - That's the .41 cal version if the .357 Maximum or the .445 Super-Mag . That was where my quest ended, to destroy by own joints and connective tissue . Pretty much the muzzle energy of a .44 mag in a light handgun.

My oldest brother was dying of cancer, from agent orange! He had a bucket list and one of the things to do was to shoot a 44 mag. His friend had one shooting 300 gr. Bullets, the friend loaded one round. My brother was weak from chemo therapy! The gun flew out of his hand and hit him in the head knocking him down! We got him up , he was bleeding from the nose, cut lip,and on his forehead and thumb! He was laughing and said WOW that was great! His friend apologized saying I should of put a lower recoil in the pistol! My brother said hell no I enjoyed that!!! He passed 4 months later at 51 years old, in 1997. ( Sorry for long story)

Agree, that 45-70 muzzle rise came dangerously close to exceeding 90 degrees starting to point backward toward his head. I saw a little of the cleanup after some "Watch This" idiot tried one-handing the 500 at a Firing Range in West Columbia, SC about 20 years ago. He fired it, it rotated backwards with the 2nd round to the face. 45-70 is for Rifles, SIlly Rabbits.

The limiting factor in 45-70 power is the twisting recoil. The barrel is high enough up relative to the handle, and the twist is in the wrong direction for right handed shooters. So high performance ammunition will try to pull the gun sideways out of your hand long before you surpass what the firearm can survive launching. In this regard, the BFR exceeds the 500 magnum by quite a bit due to its larger mass, and the longer shell lets you use more slower burning powder. You waste a bunch of the powder, but this isn't about economical ammunition. Oh, and there are actually standards for those rounds. 45-70 is split into 3 sub categories called levels. Level 1 is ammunition compatible with the old black powder rifles. It's stout, but fairly pedestrian (about .44 magnum level from the BFR, with less recoil). Level 2 is the standard for modern repeating firearms (including the BFR, but also the Marlin levergun). It kicks like a mule in the BFR, and the muzzle jump hurts your accuracy (100 yards is fine, shooting past that gets rough). Level 3 is for use in modern single shot big game rifles. It's stupid high pressure, and high velocity. I've never been willing to try it out of a BFR as it exceeds the manufacturer guidelines, _and_ the level 2 is already hard enough to manage. I chronoed my BFR shooting level 2 ammo around 1900 fps at 325 gr.

The issue is, which you mentioned is that energy is out of a 18" barrel rifle, not a short barrel handgun. Look at Grizzly Cartridge on the 500 AutoMax (just a 500 S&W Mag with the rim rebated and a taper crimp instead of a roll crimp) they have a 350 gr JHP that's putting out 4110 ft lbs energy out of the 18" bbl AR500!

Yep 450 Marlin was created at a time when .45-70 wasn't loaded in "+P" format. With stronger actions these days (such as a Ruger #1) the .45-70 can be loaded to ridiculous power. Probably tops in production cartridges is Garrett Cartridges of Texas, with 420gr doing 1850 fps. You can go higher but you'll need a Ruger #1 and approach increases with extreme precaution. You can also still get new production Winchester 1886 lever actions in .45-90, which gives you about 250 fps increase over .45-70.

I had a T/C Encore in .45/70. The Encore was also chambered in belted magnum rifle cartridges, so I reasoned that the .45/70 could be loaded to the most extreme levels of pressure. This was probably not my best thinking. The most extreme load I tried was a 400gr Speer bullet over a compressed charge which I will not name. The muzzle energy was over 3200ft/lb from the 15 inch un-ported barrel. It was very unpleasant to shoot. It honestly seemed like the rubber grip would eventually break off from the way it was bending in my hand. It flew out of my hand and hit me on the head, landing behind me once when I got a bit too relaxed with it. If the muzzle had caught me in the face, I shudder to think of the damage. I had T/C install their muzzle tamer brake, which did nothing as far as I could tell. I do not miss that pistol. .500 S&W has a different sort of recoil. The guns are mostly ported, so muzzle rise is not as extreme. They definitely slap the palm of the hand like nothing else I've fired though. Given the shorter barrel of most .500s (compared to the 15" Encore) I don't think they are making the same energy, but then again, I am not making up extreme, crazy loads for the .500s either. AFA the most powerful, though? That would probably be the .500 Bushwhacker, which is a .500 S&W which is lengthened considerably. Energy ranges from 4100 to over 5000 ft/lb.

Still doesn't matter 500 magnum is still hotter then 45-70. Hottest 500 mag load vs 45-70 500 mag still comes out on top. In this video he pick hot 45-70 load and medium of the road 500 mag loads.

This video is very helpful since one of my inconsiderate neighbors got a mammoth for his kids and just lets it run around the neighborhood. I keep asking him to keep it in his yard since it got after my golden doodle dog. Now my poor little dog won't leave the house. So thank you!

Tbf, .460 magnum also has the ability to shoot .45 colt, .45 ACP if you have a revolver that takes moon clips, .410 bore if you're a machinist, .454 casull, and .460 magnum. It's a gun with a *massive* number of calibers it at least theoretically can shoot.

@@bleachedtiedye Schofield! I knew there was at least 1 I was missing. I always get its naming a bit confused with the .38 calibers since .38 has short colt, long colt, and special. I always forget .45 "short" is actually .45 Schofield, and then when I look it up again, I'm like "wait, .45 short isn't a real thing" lol. Based off of the spec for .460 magnum, I don't see any reason .45 super couldn't be used in it, tbh. Its nominal bullet diameter is .451", which *might* cause some issues in the case of slightly undersized bullets since the bore of .460 magnum is also .451", but I think at worst it would maybe lead to accuracy issues, and only really in cases where the bullet is smaller than .451". Otherwise, externally it's dimensionally near identical to the .45ACP. It's biggest change is a thicker case wall.

Once again, the actual ammo used can make all the difference. On a secondary mote, the .500 S&W Mag is not the most powerful handgun. It is the .500 Bushwacker58, which is a LOT more powerful than the .500 S&W.

Until the .357 Mag was introduced in 1935, the most powerful production hand gun was the 1847 Colt Walker .44, when loaded to capacity. However, most users deemed it unnecessary to load full charges, as it caused problems with the loading mechanism and appreciably shortened the lifespan of the gun while still able to do it's job. And even if none of the rounds penetrated, at 4.5 pounds, you could probably prevent "mammoth abuse" by pistol-whipping it...

Ages ago I got to fire a T/C Contender 45/70 factory barrel,it was 12" long with a muzzle brake. Fired standard factory 300 gr jacketed soft points and after 3 shots my wrists and elbows said enough. If Underwood ammo is anything like top end 45/70 handloads (border line 458 win mag velocity) the recoil out of th BFR must be hellecous. Recoil out of a 7-9 lb rifle will beat you into submission in short order must me BTDT.

I own a bunch of these and the BFR 45-70 isn't actually all that bad if you shoot wheelguns regularly. the 500 actually is worse to shoot. I bought my 45-70 BFR in 2016 and it's hands down my favorite and it's actually the most accurate wheel gun I own. Back then it was only $850. It's a great hunting gun and I keep telling myself I'll take a deer with it from my archery stand but never had the right opportunity. Also, the dewalt impact driver holster fits it which I find comical.
