Band Directors" How to Get Your Students to Do What You Need & Want Them to Do

Hi! I’m a section leader in my school band and you visited us recently. You taught us how to compliment the 4 behavioral styles in the seminar but I have a question around that. How can I compliment someone who did a great job without making other mates feel isolated and react negatively? I like to compliment success, but I’m afraid some people might think they deserve the compliment instead because they did the same thing as the person being complimented, or make my compliment make others feel like they did a bad job.

Lee, great question! Compliment all who do good, when they do good, and do it sincerely. As long as you're sincere, genuine and CONSISTENT with your praise and recognition, I don't think you'll have to worry about making your other band mates feel isolated and reacting negatively. Be fair and be consistent in all that you do, and you will be received well. Have a great year!

We have just gotten our leadership applications. I have been watching some of your videos and I genuinely feel like they are helping. I do have a question on how I can improve my application/ make myself stand out. I feel like I have a solid set of goals for the marching season however how can I explain that to my directer through the application?

Hello. I’m the brass captain at my school and I would like to ask you for a little bit of help. Over the past year I’ve noticed that it is hard to get my point across and get my section to listen and respect what I have to say or ask of them. This is most prevalent in situations when I ask them to play through a certain section in a song and them not follow. We have a small band and brass section and I always try to not be the bad guy, and give them as much slack as possible because they are my friends and I don’t want them to think negatively of me. This is good in some aspects but I also need to govern them when they are acting up, and if I’m ever as harsh as I should be, I’m scared they won’t take it seriously since I am their friend. Im afraid it’ll get to the point where either I’ll be too scared to say anything to them, or they won’t listen to me when I’m serious because they don’t respect me as a person. This double entendre has been my biggest fault as a leader this past year and I want to fix this to be the best I can be. I appreciate you greatly and recently started watching you videos.
