I especially like the reactions of people like you who are technically musical and understand the changes, the build-up and release of tension etc which Band Maid excel at. They blew me away and I enjoy watching people getting real enjoyment out of their music. And they make you feel so good, you are so right about that. And your final point about finding it weird - yeah, some of my buddies can't appreciate it at all.

I think you hit on the key point - a lot of these Japanese bands make you feel good, not only listening to their songs, but watching their videos.. Same reaction with Babymetal. Band-maid is a band I got into a little late, but once I did, there was no stopping. Great reaction. I loved this song from the first listen.

Love your reaction dude. It's almost exactly the way I reacted when I first saw their video for their song "Alone". While the girls haven't disclosed their exact ages, they're all early to mid-twenties. The maid outfits make them look younger than they really are plus the fact that Asian women age differently. Miku (backup vocalist and rhythm guitar, with the pigtails) used to be in a J-pop idol group. She got the idea to form a hard rock band after working in a Japanese maid-cafe, thinking that the contrast between the "subservient maid" image and hard rock would be pretty cool. Kanami (lead guitarist) was a KZbinr who did guitar covers and songs before Miku watched some of her videos and recruited her as the first member. Kanami knew Akane (drummer) from jamming with her and suggested that they recruit her. Akane knew Misa (bassist) since they attended the same music school. Last to join was Saiki (vocals) who was previously trying to make it as a solo artist. Check out "Domination" -- it's one of their heavier, thrashier tracks. Also check out "Daydreaming" and "Secret My Lips" both of which are more on the poppier side but still quite heavy by today's standards.

It's also worth pointing out, that they write most of the songs themselves. By the amount of hits they put out in such a short time, I was sure they had a lot of guest authors, but they don't. There's some guests, but to be honest, I prefer the songs they write without help. And now that you've done Babymetal and Band-Maid, it's time to react to Doll$boxx / Take My Chance.

Don't be afraid to pause the video and talk - in fact, talk more! That's what reaction videos are best for - commentary, expression, discussion :) Nice video! Like some others here, I'd suggest checking out "Thrill" next (their first music video), but really, you can't go wrong with any BAND-MAID song, they're all refreshingly awesome. No instrument fades to the background, they all play phenomenally, and whoever mixes their songs does a damn good job.

Check out a few of their awesome live performances before they're taken down: kzbin.info/door/5q-a21ctifYAJr0MLv2kkA ; kzbin.info/door/yaZU3Ct58N1tO39oOB9KhQ ; Band-Maid is about to embark on their third limited world tour. Band-Maid is fast becoming one of the best hard rock bands in the world. Their music composition, thanks to Kanami's guitar (Ka-na-me) and Misa's bass and incredible chops and music background, Akane's powerful drive and novel kick drum patterns, Miku's writing and personality (which I hope she'll tighten up a bit) and Saiki's super strong rock Goddess voice (hope she doesn't blow it out anytime soon) and stage presence all go to make Band-Maid a major world act and culture influence.

LOL, Yup your reaction is the same as mine on this song and a few others. I had a brainless smile on my face and felt like I needed a cigarette. I DON'T EVEN SMOKE!!! LOL I noticed you have some gear in the background, so your reaction as a musician is valid in my book. I've been in an out of bands as a drummer/lead singer for nearly 4 decades so I can relate to your feelings when seeing this. Not since Loudness and EZO back in the mid "80's" have I seen such an insurgence in the Japanese rock scene of current. And especially the female bands. I LIKE IT!! ehem.........I mean I respect it. ;)

I just found these girls a couple weeks ago, and have been listening non-stop. The talent here is incredible. I don't know if I love Misa's bass, Akane's FIERCE drums, or Kaname's shredding solos more. I'd say an earlier track, "REAL EXISTENCE" to see Akane just murdering it on drums, and "Thrill" for a more visually interesting video, with heavy doses of Misa's bass, and Kaname rocking the fuck out. Just amazing. I thought the maid thing was a gimmicky put-off at first, but I don't even see it anymore.
5 жыл бұрын
I love the maid thing, I think it does exactly what they wanted it for: the contrast between the "oh, we're just cute, 'obedient' maids" and the brutal, aggressive sound.
@somejoshthing
@somejoshthing 5 жыл бұрын
@ Yeah, and I totally get that too. I only find it unfortunate because it's inevitable it'll cause some people to dismiss them as a gimmick. Hell, I almost did. But three or four songs in I changed my mind :D It is what it is, and I enjoy them no less for it. Fantastic band.

This is one of the bits I so totally love about this band: they have a ROCKING bass, always featured (many songs have a bass solo, usually followed by the guitar solo, like here). And of course a rocking bassist. Misa is awesome. I'm a lazy-as-fuck bassist myself, 's why.

I've never missed their live in my region. I feel their playing skills drastically got better this year. They play themselves, they write songs and lyrics throughout the latest two albums, but not all, though. That's the difference between the other commercial girls bands in Japan. BTW, I guess they are mid- twenty, not mid-teens.

Viewers usually jump on MISA "Bassist", also called "the barefoot assassin".. The next couple the drummer just blows your face off, Then a few more songs, the lead guitar shreds you into little bits.. After 5 or 6 songs in you just give up trying to figure out who is your favorite and just go with it..

They're in their 20's I think misa (bass player) is the oldest but her age is nowhere to be found I know that kobato (rhythm guitar, back vocal, lyrics, founder) is 26 and Saiki (vocals) is 24. They're all so funny specially kobato the rhythm guitar some people say she's seriously missing a screw, she's the one that came out with the idea of maids playing hard rock and forced the other members into wearing the suits haha, she nags the vocalist to the point she has to kick her away, and often lays flat on the ground in the street.

Great band, great song, seen them live a few times over the last few years and they are fantastic, the bassist and drummer get a massive sounding rhythm section locked down, super super tight. Not sure about their ages exactly but I'd guess they're early-to-mid twenties? Another j-rock band you might be interested in is Doll$Boxx. They are not straight up hard-rock like Band Maid, a bit of a genre mashup really, but they're on a similar spectrum to Band Maid I guess. I'd suggest checking out their track Loud Twin Stars to see what you think of them if you're interested in trying them out.

You mentioned a few time "top of the world" and i can´t resist to mention a veteran band, also a japanese band from the 80´s: Shonen Knife. A punk-rock band They start in 1981 and they are still active. The front vocal and guitar is now 57 (yes, 57). They are a punk-pop but the songs are very "fun", even they made the opening in Japan for "The Powerpuff Girls" They made a version of the classic "Top of the world" from "The Carpenters" and they do a nice work Chek it here kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3PEZGlmed9kqbM English isn´t my fisrt language, so maybe a do a few mistakes

The issue with american music these days is that instead of focusing on creating music around artist identity and letting creation be at it's core is that artists are so focused on creating music around politics. Like that Jussie Smollett music vid so focusing around racism and black lives matter. After watching his and listening to his vid it really made me feel not good, just with all that negativity and white hate just really rubbed me the wrong way. Band-maid doesn't care about politics, their music is about them, their identity as a girl rock group that focus on giving their audience a good time. It's about making people feel good and living in the moment. This is why Japanese girl bands are starting to take over the rock scene worldwide.
