Band Maid is a rabbit hole. Their live performances alone are extremely addicting. For me it starts with their musicianship. The way that they construct songs, inserting different styles and genres in a single song that on paper other bands would never dream. of doing. When they do it, it sounds perfect managing to put hooks where they need to be making it sound so natural. They obviously appear to care about and actually like each other. They also look like they are really having fun performing and actually cheer for each other in live performance (you will see this if you watch more of their live videos). Least importantly, they are definitely not hard to look at, and are a refreshing change for me from ugly guys dressed in black scowling showing their audience everything that they know in 60 seconds. For me Band Maid is not about styles or genres. Band Maid is a sound. They are also the most adorable group of musical badasses on the planet.😊😊

I still love watching freedom. Apart from Akane's amazing skills and her heart melting smile (for me anyway), I love seeing Kanami clapping for her and miku cheering and pumping her fist in the air. I do not think that I have seen another band to demonstrate that much enthusiasm for another member on stage.

@@xagorvangard wow, for sure. Most of the music that I love came from my teens and early 20s when I had little responsibilities and spent my partying cruising and chilling with that music, and gave it my undivided attention. Until Band Maid. There hasn't been another band that has come close to getting me to pay as much attention that I give them. A few years ago when they first came on suggestion feed on KZbin, I took one look at them and said "I'm not listening to this $h!t". I thought that they would be another gimmick idol band from Japan. One night I got bored and the live "Domination" came up and I decided to give them a look. My jaw was on the floor. I judged the book by its cover. Their song structures/writing and musicianship completely won me over. I ain't going to lie. They're not hard to look at either.

@@scottmcgregor562 I can relate. Thrill was the first song/MV I was able to see. And after that no turning back. Sorta turned into an obsession actually. I'm just happy to see more and more people are discovering them. They really should be bigger and more popular than they are. They are so immensely talented. Like you said song writing/musicianship is just on another level. Complex yet simple enough that they can create such catchy riffs and choruses. The fact that they can do it over and over without sounding the same and repetitive is just simply amazing. Hits after hits. Sky is the limit for these ladies.

In Japan they call it the Gap. The difference between what you see and what you hear. When Miku the rhythm guitarist started the band she wanted to shock everyone when they first heard them play really hard rock coming from these cute girls in maid uniforms. It is true that she got the idea after working in a Cafe Maid. They call their concerts Servings and the audience are Their Masters and Princesses. She also does a part of each concert called Her Happy Time where she puts a spell on the audience so they will enjoy the concert. Eccentric? Yes but when you see how good they truly are it is all just good fun.

One of the great joys of Band Maid is that they keep pushing each other to get better at their instruments and to play more challenging music. I truly haven't hit a bad song yet. Whenever "Band Maid" tour again in Europe, absolutely do go and see them live. in 40 or so years of concert-going the Band Maid gig I was able to watch in Bochum easily ranked in my top-5 experiences (along with Sonic Youth, Pink Floyd and Einstürzende Neubauten) I don't remember if I mentioned it on your last video, but you might enjoy the band "Glim Spanky". They are generally filed under "Stoner Rock". There are a couple of full concerts on youtube, and a song called "All By Myself" which is plainly Country music (and pretty great btw.), buut I'd suggest their latest clip "Circle of Time" which is live with a small orchestra as backing band kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJu2g2OOhtiWgZI . Ah, yes, the outfits. To make a short story long, Miku (rhythm guitar/backing vocals/lyricist) had worked in maid cafes and thought that a band dressed in outfits associated with sexy submissiveness playing hard, in-your-face rock would be a great hook. Kanami (lead guitar/songwriter/principal arranger) loved the idea, largely because she has no fashion sense and this way she never had to worry about what to wear on stage. Akane (drummer) thought the idea was dumb but fun, but didn't like how the costume restricted her movement. MISA (bass) hated the costumes, and almost didn't join because of them. After MISA's reaction, Miku only told Saiki (lead vocals) that they would wear 'cute costumes ' when performing. Saiki was horrified when she saw them, not because they were maid uniforms, but because they were boring and dowdy (Saiki is quite the fashionista). Eventually, things came to a head, and Akane (the leader the band doesn't have) decreed that everyone could design their own outfits, as long as they stuck to the maid theme. Kanami kept the traditional maid outfit. Miku started heading into cosplay maid territory, like she owned stock in the ruffle-and-flounce factory. Akane initially ditched the apron, shortened the skirt, and ripped out the shoulder seams of the blouse. Later, Miku helped her make a black and white jumper that suggests a maid uniform while leaving her limbs totally free. Saiki took a head housekeeper 's uniform, sexed it up, and emerged looking like a sexy dominatrix head maid. And MISA showed up in a black dress, claiming it was a Croatian maid uniform. Or maybe Lithuanian. She finally went with Ninja maid uniform, because 'you'll never see her cleaning. '

I'm going to challenge some of your comment and defend their honor. Even though they're very attractive they don't sexualize themselves. I know in the US we may see sexy maid costumes at holloween and some anime for adults have sexy maid costumes. But if you walk in Akihabara the maids you see are all about Kawaii(cute and adorable). Also the Croatian thing is out of date. When Miku defended MISA's costume it was translated as Croatian(which may be right) but some Japanese speakers thought she said assassin, which makes more sense. Hence fans refer to her as The Barefoot Assassin.

The girls moved from one record company to another, the last one being a major pony. At that point, they decided to go the whole hard rock route with all original songs. This tour was the final stop of their world tour in Tokyo, and it was the most exciting. The staff was top-notch in the past, but now they are upping the ante in terms of capital. This show gave the girls a taste of what it would be like on a large scale live stage. This venue is big, but not too big. The next step will be a big venue in Japan.

Band-Maid tends to play different genres of rock, so you'll never get bored. You have punk ("Warning"); hard rock ("After Life"); heavy metal ("Rinne); prog ("Different"); power ballad ("Daydreaming"); pop punk ("Alone"); groove ("Bubble"); classic rock ("Manners"); WTF ("Blooming"), and so on. Then there's the live stuff like "Play" and "Puzzle" and "Onset" which all demonstrate amazing musicianship on stage. Have fun with your journey.

It takes quite a few of their songs to really understand how great these ladies are, since none of their songs sound the same. Also, you'll notice more and more details that you didn't hear before, even after many listens. Their song structures can be very complex (like this one - certainly not verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge), Akane's drumming constantly varies as she's anything but a passive timekeeper, MISA the bassist is in a league of her own as you'll see if you focus on her in many of their songs, Kanami Tono's playing is crazy good but her best skill is songwriting as she is a hit and riff machine. Of their 100+ catalogue you won't find a bad song and many of them are simply spectacular songwriting, mixing a little prog with their hard rock at times, maybe some blues, drop off the cliff switch-ups, extra beats or hesitations to make it interesting, and SO many also just happen to have catchy choruses just for fun. They put "sing-along" parts in many of their songs just so the fans can participate. Simply put, I've had more fun with this band in the last 3 years that any band I can remember and I'm both over 60 and have a music degree. Oh, and almost forgot a shout out to Miku, the young lady on background vocals and rhythm guitar, who writes the lyrics and who started the band years ago after working in a Japanese Maid Cafe. She also claims to be an 800+ year old pigeon.

@@BritPopsReact ...and, remember, the 811-year old pigeon had never played guitar before the band formed. Kanami taught her well. This tune was number 20 of 21 songs in a just shy of two hour concert, and these ladies brought the energy the entire time. "Hengao" (Hen-Gow) is the name of the Japan game they play on stage where they make faces at each other. This is also on display in "PLAY" and also "Freedom" both live from this same concert. Akane even cracks-up Saiki while she's singing with her Hengao in "PLAY", enough to crackle Saiki's voice just a haiir......it's cute. These girls are quite "nutty" off stage, it's another reason we Maidiacs love them so much. Let me throw "Blooming" music video into the hat for your reaction. This one showcases their strong rhythm section, wonderful-wonderful harmonies, solid song writing and guitar shredding throughout......Cheers Boys! ....keep 'em coming

Why are they maid costumes? The audience is their biggest customer, Since they are "masters" and "princesses," the concept is that they serve as maids. The concert is called "okyuuji", the audience is called "master" and "princess", and their concert is called "homecoming". And their biggest selling point is that they play hard rock in maids and their playing technique is the best.

You *DO* want to go to a Band-Maid concert, trust me, it's worth traveling for. Watch out for them in the UK. The current top of the J-Metal heap is Nemophila. Start with Life, which is classic rock, and work up to Dissension which is in your face metal. Nemophila are very diverse but always sound like Nemophila. Hanabie - Nobody initially thinks they will like "Kawaii rap scream j-pop choral growl metalcore punk", but you just can't help smiling like an idiot and wanting more of it. I think the Japanese have weaponized music in a long-shot PR stunt to make them more popular on the world stage. Either that or Fukushima had some interesting undocumented effects on the population that are just now becoming apparent... ;)

@@BritPopsReact what ever gave you that idea 😉 As you said all 5 musicians are very talented and they are amazing to watch in person. I have seen B-M play twice here in LA in 2018 and 2019. The experience is fantastic because like their songs no 2 concerts are alike. Their reactions to their fans are special. As talented as these ladies are they have never acted like pompous Rock Stars. They take nothing for granted. Another reason why we Band-Maidiacs or Maidiacs love them so much and say they are the best Hard Rock band in the world right now. B-M is at their best playing in front of their fans because they need to feed off our energy. When B-M played in LA in 2018 I could see how nervous Saiki was right before the start of the concert at th meet and greet of the band. She didn't know what to expect. LA and SF was B-M first stand alone concert. The only other time playing in the US was a Comicon type event in Seattle with other bands in 2016. B-M opened up with Domination and when they started playing you saw Saiki's eyes light up because everyone of the 300 in attendance of that Sold Out show sang every word out loud. Saiki's fears melted away and the high energy continued for the next 2 hours. I was on MISA'S side stage left just a few meters away. It was mind blowing watching her play. Misa was in the trenches playing her Bass with constant back bending or leg lifting. She would be lost within a song and you could see the music flow through her. Her Slap/Picking style is memorizing to watch because she is so fluid doing both within the same song. You need to check out their Live videos Play, Onset, Freedom, Real Existence and Thrill to get you started. My favorite Live versions are Don't You Tell Me, Moratorium, Puzzle, Take Me Higher, Turn Me On but these are hard to find links no longer on YT but I'm sure one of the Maidiacs can help you with that. Japanese music or better... Japan can be a little confunsing for us western. As an spanish (sorry, english ins´t my first language so i can make some mitakes here and there) i went to Japan i don´t know, maybe now 8 or 9 times along almost 20 years and one thing you must understand is that this isn´t only "a foreing country", also they have a very different culture. Japan´s culture developed along more thant 1000 years in almost complete isolation. Only a few brushstrokes of chinese culture of course, but my point here is that they have a very different culture and manners. Maid costumes, well, this is a "typical" thing in nerd culture in places like Akihabara, but the issue here have two parts. One is that they call "the gape". An english word but with a japanese meaning. It´s the differente between the thing you must espect and the one you receive. You espect something from a groups of girls dressed as maids and you receibe a completly different one. The other it´s arround a very cultural issue in Japan, the "group" In Japan culture you are in a group, in some groups always. Your family, your friends, your coworkers... and inside this groups there´s also another groups. The costumes or uniforms in a band reflects a "group". A lot of japanese groups use some kind of uniform or image (of course this also happens here in the west). Another famous band called "Scandal" (a really good one, less hard and maybe a little more in yours area) used for years some kind of uniform that looks like a female high school uniform (they start playing in high school). Also another thing that make a difference, is that many music groups make longer and different versions of their themes to play live. They think "you already pay for an studio album and now for see as live, so we must make a little different version" You pay money to see they live, so they do a different thing. Play the songs exactly like the studio album it´s not an option, you pay a little more, so you deserve something more. Also, of course they have very good musicians. Music is part of the japanese school curriculum. They start to learn music in kinder with a recorder or pianica and in high school you must learn to play an instrument, any instrument in almost all the high school in the country. You have every years millions of new players and of course some of them are talented. Aldo there´s a lot of professional music schools, not only conservatories for classic music. In fact, Akane and MISA (drummer and bas) were in a prestigious one before joined the band. Anybody who wants to join a band in Japan must be a good player, not only "a normal one" Again I encourage you to hear something from another band: Scandal. They have now about 15 years on stages and start playing in public parks

@Jose Manuel Perez Well, what can we say, that was very well written and some great information. We had another comment regarding "Scandal" and they also mentioned it may be more in our comfort zone, so we will be interested to take a look there too. Also, none of our comments or scores are valid in a court of law and under t0urture we will deny all knowledge!! 😁 That was an old reaction too, your memory is much too good for us. Finally, you have to remember we are two "Brit-Pop" softies and the harder metal is sometimes a bit too hard even though it's is technically very difficult to play we go more with the "how did that sound to us on a first time hearing scale" You are always welcome to challenge our scoring, but to get it overturned will require a signed written statement from the band or artist in question with full VIP tickets to a concert of our choice. We can't say fairer than that 😁

Are you just talking about the drumming (since that's what the Brit Pops guys focused on for some reason)? Because, song for song, you may be right that the drumming isn't as technically difficult in this one BAND-MAID song as in that one Megadeath song. Don't for one second think that means Akane can't play any and everything, because she can, in spades. Megadeath's drummer might be right there with her, too, but I can't stand Mustaine's voice (and I've tried) to refresh myself enough to know. I've already been through the phase of my life where I listened to a lot of thrash metal, and honestly I have no interest in revisiting that stuff. In the long run, we're all gonna like what we like, but BAND-MAID's trio of ace musicians (Kanami on lead guitar, MISA on bass, Akane on drums) are extraordinarily skilled.
@BritPopsReact

@Crabuki Yes, well said and me, "The Brit Pop guy" was focused on drumming as I enjoy watching the drummer. We are here to react to the song and we say what we are thinking and if you have seen any of our other reactions, we don't just say all the nice things to make everyone happy, we talk about how we felt about a certain song. C4duke here, comments on almost all our our reactions from Megadeth to Katy Perry and we have a bit of banter going with it, so his comments we more aimed at us "Brit Pops" and they scores we gave, which are for fun only and pulling US up on our scoring and not having a go at Band-Maid as such. Let's all stay respectful and we all have different taste and thresholds, we are giving Megadeth a go and some of it is OK to our delicate little ears. Peace out all and let's all get along nicely, the world is in a Sh1T state as it is.
