The secret to playing for 3+ hours is to have several breaks where they interact with each other and the crowd. This show had 5 where, 1. Miku greeted the crowd, 2. Talk about the 10th anniversary tour and show off their new "battle-armor." 3. Saiki and Kanami talk before doing their acoustic together. 4. Miku reads her letter of thanks and then does Omajinai Time. 5. Old videos from their early days are shown and they talk about them. Hate? was song 27 of the 33 and was followed by MC #5 the old videos. I do love your reactions. Always learn something new. Thank you.

Hell yeah, it's Jules! :) How play so long? They take breaks. Instead of going backstage, though, they take their break on stage in front of the audience with Miku's MC breaks. Omaginai Time is always one of the MCs, and there's always a greeting / welcome MC. The rest of the band sit around and relax and occasionally heckle Miku, who comically gets frustrated with them. In Nashville the venue had a bowling lane so they snuck off to bowl a few frames (which, hilariously, the audience could see and Miku would have a mini tantrum at them for interrupting her). The other members have started helping more with the MCs, Saiki in particular. Honestly the MCs are highly entertaining so they are working to earn more than 100% of your ticket price each show. They bust ass to earn you buying a ticket the NEXT time they're around. Always good to have you back doing BAND-MAID, Jules.

I saw them last October in Otaru Japan and it was MISA's birthday. MISA actually took over Omajinai Time (Moi Moi! Khun Khun!) while Miku sipped champage looking on approvingly! MISA was so shy it was super cute! I love it when the band wind Miku up too!

During their "Conversation" you can hear Miku enter in with her guitar in the left channel. Which makes it sound so much more rich and full.

Jules, really enjoy your reactions. Just to address a couple of things you brought up (and if I'm wrong, somebody will let me know.) The "home" or tonic note actually doesn't change. If I recall the pitch, I think it's in E all the way through. BUT, it changes from a scale that has a minor 7th in the verse to a major 7th in the chorus - that much I'm pretty sure of. I think it's got a flat 3 all the way through too but could be wrong on that. I'm just going off the top of my head now. On the issue of how they come up with this stuff, yeah - it's nothing short of miraculous isn't it? That's how they keep such a wide variety of people, with different musical interests and knowledge levels, not only coming back but loving the band more with each passing day/week/month/year. Been over 4 years for me at this point. Kanami (lead guitarist) is the primary songwriting genius here. Her brain just doesn't work like a normal human brain. She's on a whole other level. That said, she'll give the members lots of leeway to come up with their own parts. MISA is such a virtuoso, of course she's going to want melodic lines and creative stuff that shows off her chops. Akane just doesn't think as a timekeeper on drums either. In fact, she'll often accent in the least expected place - for one measure - and then do something different for the next one. And the next one. It's a miracle she remembers her parts. And when you're finally at a place where you have taken in the sounds, and want to read the words, many of Miku's lyrics are really, really, really, REALLY good. And that's coming from someone who doesn't really care much about lyrics as a rule. Theirs are worth reading. I swear to God and to Pink Floyd and all my favorite bands that I've never heard a band like Band-Maid in my life. They are indeed a miracle.

Yes Miku normally writes the lyrics she then gives them to Saiki to approve, Saki also approves Misa's bass line just so Misa get praise 😅. Although Saiki wrote these lyrics to Hate? It is about a friends husband who had an affair and broke her friends heart. Saiki wasn't impressed as you can tell from the scathing lyrics.

I agree with everything, especially about Kanami. She's the one that elevates this band beyond "very good." It's tempting to say she has a really good musical education and background (all true and it certainly doesn't hurt) but "Her brain just doesn't work like a normal human brain" seems to be the best explanation. She is one of those rare birds who always seem to have something to say. It's uncanny how she comes up with new, unique phrases that seem odd but are perfectly logical at the same time.

From an interview: Q: So, Track 8 is HATE?. The very last song has a scary title. I believe it was written rather early among the songs on the EP, wasn’t it? Kanami: It may be the oldest song among these. I wrote this song back when when I was writing a lot of riffs. Originally, I was thinking of writing a riff-based instrumental, and then we decided to add a vocal melody to it. She asked me if she could sing the instrumental melody already there as it was, so I had her sing it… [Note: the speaker is noted as Akane in the original Japanese text, but I changed it to Kanami.] Saiki: Yeah. I had her complete it as it was.

And the amazingest thing is that 9 out of 10 Maidiacs would say the same thing. Their songwriting is unmatched in my lifetime, and that includes the Beatles. There - I said it.

Jules -- Picking a favorite Band-Maid song is like picking a favorite Maid. It can't be done, imo. I mean, what's better: Puzzle or Moratorium, Play or Freedom, a Kauai sunrise or a Kauai sunset? My favorite song is the one I'm currently listening to. My favorite Maid is the one I'm currently watching. Even though it's futile, it's fun, I guess, for trying.

Band-Maid has amazing endurance. The members are careful to eat right and exercise regularly to keep themselves in top peak physical form. They are true musical athletes.

Hello Jules, I hope you are having a great day. My favorite Band Maid song seems to be whichever song I'm listening to at the moment. It's like asking a parent to name their favorite child; they may have one, but they won't admit it. If I remember right, this song was later into that marathon 3.5-hour set, and they still had tons of energy. I can't prove it yet, but I suspect little Miku has a fusion reactor inside her to give her energy. Miku will let the band take breaks while she continues to entertain the audience usually, but Saiki has been gradually increasing the amount of time she speaks to the audience during breaks too.

Omg! I would get tired dancing and playing on stage for 40 mins sets, I can't imagine the HOURS on stage even with some breaks. These girls are so amazing

Yes you are right, Saiki just got into the dueling solos without the solos ending. No home. MISA and Kanami just got on at a lower intensity, then came the hook. And we were home. It was just hanging. This is a thing I like with Japanese bands, and also western bands from the 60-ies and 70-ies. They break conventions. Why not put in unexpected chords here and there? Why follow the ordinary patterns? Lets Jam! Who cares about how it should be made? Its like Nightwish or Iron Maden. You listen at "Afraid of the Dark" and you do NOT know where it is going.

HATE? was song TWENTY-SEVEN of a 33 song set list at their Yokohama Arena Tenth Anniversary Tour Final. I live in the Midwest and got out of bed at 2:30 AM to watch the live stream from Yokohama that started at about 3:15 AM and lasted 3-1/2 hours - the sun was coming up here as it ended. The Ten Ant final set list was very carefully scripted: the breaks were timed to give every member of the band enough time to catch their breath and do their best through each section. For example: they played "Rock In Me", a Miku song, just before Kanami and Saiki did 2 acoustic duets and Saiki made her solo piano debut, then the band came back on stage and played "Onset", an instrumental, then "Brightest Star", another Miku song, before Saiki came back to sing "Freedom".

This is why we love Kanami. She keeps creating NEW songs. I believe "Hate?" is Saiki's indignation at a man who was unfaithful to a friend of Saiki. Moral: don't get on Saiki's bad side. She'll sing a song about what she thinks of you -- and the whole world will know. My number 1 Band-Maid "song" is the instrumental "From Now On", followed by "Blooming" (my previous number 1). Soft spot for "Gion-cho" ... and about 120 others. I would never have picked "Don't You Tell Me" in my top 5, but their recent live release from Yokohama Arena was an absolute killer -- right up there with "From Now On". Oh, and Puzzle -- every version. And....

"Glory" has a Latin or Caribbean rhythm, "Bubble" has a distincitve groove. Both are different from all the other Band-Maid songs you've reacted to.

Apologies for being an unbearable music nerd. The singular most interesting thing about this song for me is Saiki’s chorus melody note choices. I haven’t tabbed it out yet but it’s the transition from the second to third measure. The first note of the third measure is absolutely unconventional and gives me visions of 1930’s Big Band music. So we have a furious rock song with a Big Band element in the chorus. Only Band Maid doing Band Maid things ❤

Yokohama Arena last November. I watched the livestream. 33 songs, 3 1/2 hours! It was amazing! 🙂 My favorite song is 'alone' 'Manners' and 'Take Me Higher' and Anemone, Smile and Real Existence.... and Memorable

@@80mtn I received info from the fan club but no mention of the word Livestream. I'm not sure what they're trying to sell me other than merch . The concert tickets (seats) are about 60.00 USD.
