As a musician of 56 plus years, I found Band-Maid back in 2014. They had a problem with their management company, because they wouldn't put any of their own music on their albums. The song "Alone" is the first song the company let them put their own material on a album. Band-Maid took off after that. They have a new management company now and they let them control their own music and pretty much control their own destiny. Band-Maid was created by Miku Kobato the rhythm guitar player, she is the main lyricist. The lead guitarist Kanami Tono writes and composes all their own music. Akane the drummer and Misa the Bass player both went to the same prestigious Japanese music school together. I have every CD that they have and they don't do the same thing with their music. In my opinion you won't find a better band on the planet today IMHO.

I always like it when people recognize the complexity of their song composition and arrangement. I often describe it as dense. With their latest album release it appears the Maidens decided to show everyone how progressive rock is done. Take some notes guys they are only scratching the surface. I've heard so many people mentioning other Japanese female bands. I agree they are all amazing and have incredibly skilled musicians, but band-maid sound is different, I can't articulate how. Some people disagree with me, but I've listen to so many bands of all genres and still find them unique. I believe all maidiacs would know what I mean.
@yang-it-yin70023 жыл бұрын
@@lurkmerchant Yeah! I agree they have a unique sound that is entirely their own. Band-maid has been grouped with many other Japanese all female groups but I believe it is not due to their musical similarities but similarities of Nationality, gender and they all have amazingly talented world class musicians that play various forms of aggressively heavy music. They all have their own positive qualities which is undeniably impressive in their own way. But I believe what separates Band-Maid from those others is Songwriting and the Tone they have crafted from their gear. Many underestimate Tone and sound engineering and is often overlooked as far a I'm concerned it is vitally important piece to the equation, it lends to that bands overall signature sound and most of all a sound that resonates to others who hear it. And as far as tone goes Misa's Bass tone is exceptional. As important as tone is what truly separates Band-Maid from the others is their Songwriting. And primary songwriter and Lead Guitarist Konami is the architect and musical genius behind those songs. Since she and her band mates are not inhibited or limited by their musical abilities so they have free reign to incorporate virtually any style of music into their own musical DNA. And their DNA has the Best elements of Hard Rock, Metal, Funk, Punk, Grunge, Jazz and Pop all of which forms a uniquely yet familiar tune filled with various catchy Pop-like hooks where even language does not become a barrier. Also I feel many bands that have multiple members the posses next level musical skills tend to over play and cannot formulate their songs where a melody would stick in someone head. Usually those type of bands EGO becomes a problem and their demise. But with Band-Maid it is quite the opposite their tunes make room to highlight each members talent in a way that enhances the tune without taking away from the hook. I often find myself saying wow that song seemed it was over too soon and find it was 4 plus minutes long. They have mastered the art of leaving you wanting more.

@@lurkmerchant the fun fact is people usually compare them to Lovebites, Babymetal and stuff, when they are clearly not the same genre. One can like this or that genre or band but if we talk about rock B-M has no pair today. Although it's difficult to give B-M a genre because they change and mix them like nothing and it always sounds fresh, so yeah I'd also say "unique" is the best word to describe them. While other bands stick to their main genre Band-Maid is experimenting with music itself. Shit, if Ms. Tono decided to make a country-rock song I bet my kidney she'd do it amazing. All that and more is why they are the best band ever in my honest opinion 🤘

There are so many songs to pick from, but going by your preference, I would suggest the following: * Why why why - Another song with controlled chaos. The vocal arrangement is one of the best in the entire Band-Maid's catalogue. * Giovanni - The closest Band-Maid has gotten to prog rock. * Onset Live - An ethereal instrumental. MISA has a cool pick to slap action in the middle of the song. To be honest, you can never go wrong with any Band-Maid songs, but you got to start somewhere.

Kanami, the lead guitarist, also writes the songs; Miku, the 2nd guitarist, writes the lyrics; Saiki, the vocalists, usually directs and has the final say on many decisions; Akane (A-Ka-Nay) is one of the best rock drummers in the business with her relentless drive, fluid dynamics and the kick. And MISA is rather unique with her alternating pick & slap style with up & down (the neck) runs that not only drive the songs, but adds a counter lead to Kanami's main riffs and solos. But you're right, Ryan. Band-Maid has so much talent, personality and creativity that we're lucky to have such a prolific and joyful band (over 100 songs) in our lives. I know some have mentioned this, Thrill was their first successful song and it was the song that saved them from breaking up (something that all of us music lovers can be happy about). Since their song "Alone" in 2016, they have written all their own songs. Kanami Tono (the lead guitarist) writes all the song instrumentation for their songs and Miku Kobato (Rhythm Guitarist) with Saiki Atsumi's (lead singer) help doing the lyrics. MISA is the bassist and Akane Hirose is on drums. I know I suggested some songs last post, but I will add "Play" (Live) to those. Its an instrumental that they added lyrics too. Anyway, I enjoyed the reaction, looking forward to more, subbing to you and have a great day.

The Bass Player MISA plays with a pick and slaps in the same song and changes from one to the other very quickly! From a radio interview - - (Chris): What amazed me most about your play style is the changing of picking to slapping, and then picking again so smoothly. Some bassists may throw their picks away to slap, but you use the same pick when you change from slapping to picking again, right? (Misa): No, I don't throw my pick away. I have become better as I practiced. For the recent 2-3 years, I haven't lost any pick. (Chris): Show me how. (Misa): I keep the pick with my index finger and palm. (Chris): Then you slap the bass with your thumb and middle finger? Can you show me how you play? (then Misa shows how) (Misa): Because I've been practicing these days, I can change faster than ever. (Chris): You are mixing them up! That's awesome! (Misa): I think anybody can do it if you practice. In most bands, the drum and bass are the foundation of the song. In Band-Maid it is only the rhythm guitar, everyone else is given the freedom to meander and do crazy you know what. Somehow each girl knows their part and when to pull back and support the rhythm guitar and when to cut loose. Everyone is given a moment to shine. And with all that going on somehow the vocalist just plows through. This band is made of five pillars and cannot exist without each one. Their songs are self written and Kanami (lead guitarist) writes them. If you would like to hear one of their ballads react to "About Us". Yeah the change into the chorus is still throwing me for a loop even after 4 months. 🤣 This is from their latest album and is definitely among their more chaotic/crazy songs. Most of their songs sit somewhere in between the two songs you've listened to so far on the craziness scale. Band-Maid have said they watch reaction videos and this is one I hope that they'll see. I feel they're in a bit of a hard spot because they want to continue to please the fans of their older stuff, but at the same time they have said over and over that they want to keep pushing themselves. I hope videos like this -- full of genuine, enthusiastic appreciation of the craft they've put on display here -- will help to give them confidence that they can succeed in this space, that they can please fans and gain new ones, and help encourage them to see how far they can go.

I really enjoyed your reaction 👌🏻 MISA is also my favorite bass player and she's so fast when she's switching from pick to fingers to pick. She's a real prestidigitator! It's funny that you were talking about Billy Sheehan because he plays the bass parts on the song "One More Chance Is Enough" by the japanese band Li-sa-X BAND. The leader of the band is the japanese prodigy guitarist Li-sa-X (she was 15 years old when the song was recorded last year) who already played with great guitarists like Martin Friedman or Paul Gilbert. Check out the song when you have time ;)

Misa uses both a pick and slaps, when she is slapping she tucks the pick in her index finger and effortlessly switches back and forth during songs.

Ok I have to add this to my first comment. The bass player makes Geddy Lee from Rush sound like a beginner. I was and still am to some extent a Rush fan.

Punk - "Warning"; Prog Punk - "Different"; Pop Punk - "Choose Me"; Old School Heavy Metal - "Rinne"; Hard Rock - "Afterlife"; Groove - "Bubble"; Classic Rock - "Manners"; Power Ballad - "Daydreaming"; All of the above - "Blooming". Misa is a pure work of art, and I can't think that Billy wouldn't appreciate her artistry too! An excellent band, through and through, I've been listening and following their progress since about 2016, and it's a rare thing to be able to say that they've never done a single song that I've not liked. Even the ones I expected to be quite easily generic in execution carry that special Band Maid spice of soul and depth to them.. a kind of honesty that comes through in the work and raises the bar.

"And there is no doubt about the technical credentials of MISA. She is a graduate of the Tokyo Music School, one of the most prestigious music schools in the world. If you have heard of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, then you will understand how impressive that credential is."(RaijinRock)

The drummer does so much with so little. She gives drummers with monster drum kits such as Neil Peart of Rush (RIP Neil) Daniel Carey of Tool, What his name from Metallica. Those people are dinosaurs. So many drummers today have small drum kits and are doing so much more with them. I look at drummers with these huge drum kits and they actually look comical.

When I was a young shit drummer I wanted a giant drum kit with 2 bass drums and 6 toms. Now I'm an old shit drummer all I can carry round is an undersized jazz kit

It sure ain't no verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, verse, chorus end. Their arrangements are stellar and are like this in every song pretty much. On top of that, this is live, just no physically present audience, but a lot of on-line fans. They would need a huge venue to fit them all in. Who knows, this might be their future, live real audience shows with an online component for the rest of the world. I'd be fine with that!

Great reaction, I was thoroughly entertained the whole time and you clearly really enjoyed it. For me what’s makes band-maid stand out is the song writing. Like, there’s a ton of great musicians better than these women. Bands of musicians that are better on their instruments. But band-maid has the ability to show case their talent, do some wild and even chaotic stuff at times while still making catchy fun songs. Like songs you wanna hear again and again. And that’s the key to their success to me. They something for everyone, for the casual listener and the music geeks.
@fastskipper7773 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I will say spade a spade. There are musicians who are better than Kanami, Misa or even Akane. When I see some Jazz bassists out there, or Senri Kawaguchi or even those two girls in Lovebites, yeah it true what you say. But, I still love Band-Maid more than any other bands. Their songs really touch me. It's often kind of dangerous to start listening to one of their songs because then I have to listen to more than one. Their songs are so addicting. And I will use up a lot of time when I need to do other things like go to sleep at night.
@joshi_new_wave3 жыл бұрын
@@fastskipper777 Yea for sure, I wasn’t taking anything away from them by saying that. But rather saying their strength is in the song writing. But they’re still top notch technically speaking. But simply being technically better of course dose not mean you’ll get better songs. Hell, I’ll take the Misfits of Dream Theatre any day lol.
