Thank you very much for just another wonderful insightful breakdown. You’re one of the very, very few reactors I absolutely don’t mind if you stop every second. I learn so much. I seem to recall reading somewhere that Miku's highly enthusiastic yell at 15:05 caught the entire band off guard and they tease her about it to this day... but when the little pigeon yells "SING!!", you'd better sing.....

You are right, can be heard on the subchannel of their live DVD where the members are talking over the whole show (I think Miku is yelling "SAY!!"). Another interesting moment at 13:38 where Misa gives a sharp gaze to her right. Kanami was assigned to move over to switch Misa's pedals. Misa needed to confirm.

Unexpected is the best definition for Band Maid. Ever since they began as a band they have surprised everyone at every turn. Play started out as an instrumental, but Saiki thought it would make a good song so Miku wrote lyrics for it. That probably helps explain the weirdly cool structure. It's a live staple, but they change the intro bit periodically. It seems to get more elaborate and epic each time they re-work it. This is intro #2 of 3 I have heard them do for this song.

My favorite BAND MAID song is the last one I heard. Kanami's Gear from an interview: PRS Custom 24 "I have tried other guitars as well. Among those I’ve tried, PRS was the perfect guitar for my image of BAND-MAID songs." Amps Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifier 4×12 Recto Standard cabinet Effects - When I compose, I don’t think much about the effects. I use it to enhance the songs I've already written live. Here are the typical settings of my pedalboard: Delay: Free The Tone FT-2Y, Eventide TimeFactor - I prefer using Digital Delay on the TimeFactor and on the H9, I use Spring Reverb. I use Free The Tone FT-2Y in a series circuit because it adds delays to a set tempo. TimeFactor is used to connect sends and return effects to clean and solo channels. On the other hand, I use H9 only for songs that use reverb. Currently, I only use it for reverb, but I would like to try more algorithms in the future. Reverb: Eventide H9 - I am a big fan of Eventide's so I want to keep using it forever! Volume: Shin’s Music Perfect Volume Drive: One Control Strawberry Red Overdrive, Fulltone Obsessive Compulsive Drive Overdrive Distortion - I use the boost pedal to add more gloss and deepness in the clean channel or to amplify the sound of the solo or riff. Booster: Friedman Buxom Boost Compressor: Pete Cornish OC-1 Noise Reduction: ISP Technologies Decimator II Wah: Morley Steve Vai Bad Horsie 2 Octave: Digitech Drop

I still hear things after hundreds of listens to a song -- like Miku's singing with her unique vocal accents and close harmonies. Or Kanami's verse riffing around the drums and Saiki's melodies. Or MISA's independant counter riffing while incorporating a little bit of what everybody else is doing. (She's very busy. No wonder she doesn't smile much because of all that concentration). And of course Akane continues to amaze me because I'm always hearing new things from her. This is why their songs continue to grow on me after all these years. Like I've said before: Band-Maid writes and performs the most dense yet beautifully integrated hard rock music in history. FYI, “Play” was originally to be an instrumental for Akane, Misa, & Kanami. Miku, having greatly improved on guitar, now participates more in the intro. Anyway, Miku & Saiki heard the others rehearsing and they liked the music so much, they wanted to make a song of it. Miku went off and quickly penned some lyrics and the song “Play” was born. Akane’s drumming is amazing on this, particularly her pedal work. Great review of a cool song.

That was, to paraphrase an ex-PM of the UK, "Educational. Educational. Educational. And not for entertainment." As a non musician, hearing your analysis helps me understand what all the band members are doing to contribute to the overall splendour of what I'm hearing, increases my appreciation for Kanami's expertise at composition and increases my levels of awe for this superb and seemingly faultless band. Their latest release on their channel is a live double bill of 'Manners' followed by 'Black Hole', which is one of the heavier songs I've heard from them and which skilfully shifts from Rock to Prog Rock to Metal with their usual ease and which I think you'd find interesting - kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5LJamekg7iFfac . Another reactor, a multi-instrumentalist who analyses the drums most of all, is Wave Potter, who said something about that call and response at the start between Miku and MISA being Kanami's lesson for Miku in playing 7ths. At least, I think he said that. You'll know!

oh hell yes!!!!! This is the song that hooked me on Band Maid! Oh and I guess... FIRST? Had always avoided Band Maid, figured they were just another gimmick Idol band. Had youtube on autoplay, was doing house chores when the 2018 Zepp Tokyo version of Play, and... yeah. If you can hunt that version down, do so. MIsa's bass tone has never sounded better. Also... nice cheeky way to do the reverb explanation..
@stujamieson39443 жыл бұрын
Like many, Thrill was my introduction to Band-Maid. Then a few weeks later I listened to Play and this was the song which compelled me to look deeper. Then I heard Onset and the deal was sealed.
@killerpeaches73 жыл бұрын
@@stujamieson3944 Yeah if I'd heard Thrill first. I don't think I would have gone looking for a second. Not that it's bad, but it's... well, not "Band Maid" enough, for me, none of the flourishes and intricacies Kanami and the ladies would add when they started writing their own stuff. Not that I hate on all the pre Kanami stuff, since Real Existence is one of my faves to this day. But it didn't help with Thrill that on first view I could tell Miku was just holding the guitar, Akane looked bored playing (probably was because the drums were so beneath her abilities) and that Misa looked like she wanted to be anywhere else. Really only Miku and Saiki didn't look painfully uncomfortable in the MV, to me. I was happy they released the live Okyu-Ji version so I can watch that instead. With Play, about halfway thru I stopped cleaning and sat down and watched, then clicked on the MV for Dice. Then Moratorium. IIRC this was about a month before they released Conqueror, so already had MVs for Bubble, Glory and I think Blooming? Anyhow, pretty much spent the next hour watching every MV they did have, Before Yesterday, Non Fiction Days, etc, etc, and haven't looked back. I would say that Band Maid and Lovebites have been my two biggest finds since Nightwish way back in the mod 00s, for stuff that absolutely just grabbed my personal tastes by the throat and refused to let go.
@stujamieson39443 жыл бұрын
@@killerpeaches7 I've tried Lovebites and they just don't do it for me. They remind me too much of Iron Maiden who I'm not that keen on. But in truth I'm not a huge metal head. Hard rock is pretty much my limit. My gotos at the moment are Band-Maid and Kiyoshi. Have you checked out Kiyoshi?

Thanks for another great reaction. You're the first reactor I've seen that points out MISA's left-hand muting. I love that you mentioned how Akane silenced the drums during MISA's bassing in the opening call and response with Miku's guitar. One of my fave Band Maid concert moments is during an earlier version of "Play", when MISA calls and the response comes from each of the guitars and the drums. You should check that out at bili bili. Just watch the opening minute over there. The call and response comes 35 seconds into that. The first 35, you get to watch MISA tear up her bass. The expression on your face when for the first time Saiki calls to the audience to sing the chorus. Hilarious! You're also the first reactor I've watched that points out that Saiki screams in pitch. Next up, maybe try another instrumental: "Without Holding Back". Also on bili bili.

Thanks dude, glad you liked this one! Left hand muting was a huge leap in my bass playing, you get so much more control over the feel and groove! Cheers for the suggestion, I'll make a note of that for sure!

Ha ha nearly 28 minutes for "Play" So for "Black Hole" or "No God" (Live versions) I'd think you'd be getting into the 35+ minute realm, pausing quite a bit more as they are a tad chaotic but still melodically organised?
@JbfMusicGuitar3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'll see how that one goes, but I might have to split it in to two (if the songs are clearly separated)... the logistics of editing that terrify me, lol!

@@JbfMusicGuitar The two songs are separated clearly, and they're actually from different parts of the set list. I guess they're demonstrating their range. As I recall, the double video came out just as they released their blu-ray of the previous live performance, so good (intentional) timing.
