When composing, Band Maid don’t hold back on ideas and riffs for fear of running out of material for later. They are the only band I’ve known in 50 years to not try to hold riff and melody concepts in reserve for later. They’re very courageous musicians when writing and confident in their ability to craft each song with its own uniqueness.💪🏻🤘🏻

I'd agree 100% that listening to pretty much any Band-Maid track makes you realise how many other bands have got away with just cookie cutter drums and bass for years and years. It also makes you realise how much more interesting/ entertaining things get when the band members playing bass and drums can actually contribute to the song. You don't have to have deep musical insight, or even like it, to realise that it's just better. It really is!

Anime studios must pay BAND-MAID by the note. Kanami not only demands more from her bandmates in these new compositions but she demands more from the listener. For mere mortals, the first listen of this song is a bit overwhelming. Hey, it's not her fault that it took me several listens to figure out the second half of her guitar solo was not random chaos but had a structure to it.

Band-Maid's music is dense with many ideas in each song yet it's so tightly integrated, it doesn't feel like a jumbled mess. for my particular taste, there have been few drummers who have moved me, like Bonham, Coupland, Palmer, now there is Akane too. Saiki sounds amazing. I swear her voice just gets stronger and richer in sound with each release.... Miku just adds these glorious little high note counter points to Saiki throughout that just takes it to another level. As good as this song is.. and its great. Imagine that-a 55 year old fanboy! Yet every time you turn around there’s people who just don’t get it, and say we’re fanboys, or we’re “not objective”, and that Band Maid is ordinary… no different from other rock bands out there. But we know they are! It’s really not hyperbole. I guess it will take 20 years to pass before they are recognized for what they are… or maybe it requires them to magically become men, or sing only in English for them to achieve greater recognition. 😟

There are some elements in the song that I have heard in some of their other songs such as the low and heavy bass and drum just hammering hard for a moment in unison. It seems like Kanami has dozens and dozens of pieces that she assembles songs out of which is one reason why it is both different and familiar at the same time. That said she still manages to add new and unique pieces with each song. One other thing with Kanami's music composition is I think she comes at it more like writing a symphony than a song as many songs seem to be built around one instrument, person or riff but hers takes all the instruments into account and treats them fairly equal. You can listen to each person and they all have important roles to play. I have been listening to them since their second CD and have not gotten bored listening to them yet.

It is just absolutely STUPID how much is crammed in to this song. Dare I say more than 90% of their catalog. I'm used to the second verse gymnastics and the breakdown and half time section but this is a different animal. This song needs to be pulled apart and listened to over 10 minutes to even have a shot at catching it all. The speed of the song makes it even harder to process in real time. This song is some next level big brain stuff. Mincho's guitar tone reminds me of the late 80s guitar synth sound ala Scorpions "Savage Amusement" or Iron Maiden "7th Son." DAMN GOOD analogy Ryan with the "1000 jagged (sic) pieces making a smooth surface."

They’re going all out with these anime openings. My first listen and it didn’t click with me… it was too chaotic, but the more I listen to it, the more I get it. I can start to pick out the chorus better and the melodies. In typical BAND-MAID fashion, they hit you with a ton of energy and killer drums. They’re going for a sound that is unique to them and will make them stand out. I want to say this is really important because anime is a big deal in Japan, and if you have a killer opening theme for a popular anime, it can really boost the popularity of the artist. I hope this song can help propel their popularity in Japan. To me, Blooming would work so well as an anime opening, the first half. It has the formula and structure of a great anime opening. However, they went with the likes of Different and Sense, which are a lot further along in their evolution. They deserve a lot more exposure and recognition than they’re getting, and hopefully this song will help.

A really amazing song. I'm glad they can continue to impress and up the game as they release music. I think the best thing I notice is how the vocals have been improving. Miku and Saiki both are really doing amazing and it's great to hear them try new things and push themselves. Saiki's a true beauty and I hope she gets the recognition she deserves for her talent. About the Reddit folk, I can't imagine being that disillusioned about music. "Ah man. A band I really love made ANOTHER good song? Geez man. Why can't they try something different?". I'm poking fun, of course, but I don't know any band worth listening to that doesn't have a 'sound' to them. Like you can put on a new song and know that it's them. I hope I never get to the point where I think that's a bad thing.
@stevehall51283 жыл бұрын
The guy's complaint was more about the tendency towards more frenetic sound and proggy complexity starting with "Different," so it was really a wish for them to go back to simpler stuff. But...he based that on one album and three singles (two of them anime themes) released within just eleven months, which isn't enough to predict a trajectory for any band, and especially not this one. It's like if it rained two days in a row and somebody went, "Welp, I guess it will rain every day now for eternity." It also ignored songs like "Manners," "Chemical Reaction," and "About Us" which are mid-tempo and groove-oriented. And of course if they put out another song like _those_ somebody else is gonna say they sold out and went pop - oh wait, that already happened with "About Us." You just can't please everybody.
@darkchiron3 жыл бұрын
@@stevehall5128 I could see maybe not liking a direction a band is taking, at least. That makes more sense. @stevehall51283 жыл бұрын
@@darkchiron Yep, the Conqueror backlash (to the whole album, really) was what I immediately thought of when this guy was expressing fear that they were just going to get proggier and mathier. And as I have to point out all too often, those people were proven completely wrong by Unseen World. Trying to guess what Band-Maid might do in the future is a fun pastime but it's even less productive than trying to predict what's coming next in one of their songs during the first hearing. I don't understand how anybody familiar with their catalogue doesn't get that by now.

They have genuinely created their own genre and it grows more complex and melodic with each song. Amazing song. What a band, what a way to compose! There is something you have said that has made me reflect. Regarding the melodies and countermelodies that MISA and Kanami play. They are like flying buttresses in cathedrals. It's been a while since I stopped considering Band Maid's bass as part of the rhythm section. Rather, they use a musical bass-lead guitar combo as the sustenance of the melody. And it is tremendously robust. Of course from there you can build cathedrals. As tall and beautiful as you want, every time. Like the songs that they compose.

Great breakdown as usual. I found this song very interesting because the second verse doesn't change much by Band-Maid standards, but the bridge is a new sound, with hardly any vocals and some quite different phrasing in the vocals that are there (8:18). The third verse is where we get the change and this verse sounds more like a typical Band-Maid bridge to me. Saiki trying out new vocal stuff (5:14), (8:33). Not my favourite Band-Maid song ever, but I think it shows some continued growth from the band and it's still good enough that it would be the best song on any album from most other bands. Pay no attention to the misery factory that is Reddit. They are (not everyone, of course) every bit the cancer they claim Facebook is (and it is) but with an unearned superiority complex thrown in to make them truly insufferable. Looking forward to your impressions of the other two songs!

You are not the lone ranger when it comes to Band-Maid's ability to spoil the listening experience to any other music out there. I agree with your Black Sabbath comparison. I think the time has come to label Band-Maid as the Band-Maid sound! This band transcends anyone category and is uniquely an entity that stands alone. No other band sounds like them. They have a unique signature that is nearly impossible to duplicate. The proof of that statement is the indispensability of each member. You simply cannot replace anyone from this band without drastically altering their sound signature and that is truly a rare thing. Although this band has been established with a vast catalog of tracks under their belt which is approaching the triple digit range, I feel they have yet to peak and are only scratching the surface of where they can take this. I also play the drums as a hobby, but I'm at a decent level, I can tell you that certain passages of Akane took me one day to learn them, one day for just one fill!!!

Wow, that's nuts!

@@RyanMear Akane often makes fractions between hands and feet that are really absurd and unnatural, in many songs if you listen carefully you will notice that she breaks into beating and taking up even the low kick burst, this is not easy to perform, and also to recognize, but it is that which allows Alkane to have that incredible musical transport, which very few drummers would be able to achieve. The speed of Akane moving around the drum rig is crazy, when you try, you will always be a little bit backward at first, or you will be forced to play dirty to close just right. Before you can do anything decent you will have to try hundreds of times.

Many good comments here to a great reaction... one of the first to try to put into context why this appeals so much musically. And we didn't even get to why this is a great video - atmospheric, edgy lighting and camera angles, great coverage of the players, Saiki sucking up the focus when she points those eyes at camera. While I want to just listen a bunch more, the video is also top notch.

Dear Ryan Mate (incidentally mate is the British/Astralian/New Zealander equivalent f "Man" in the US)! This must be your longest comment for the shortest song! Incidentally, the lyrics are quite positive around the message "幸せになりたい/shiawase ni naritai/I want to be happy" (with "whatever..." to back it up)! Definitely looking forward too the next reactions! Cheers, Robert-Gilles PS* The pandemic is definitely on its way out in Japan and we can safely surmise they will resume their live concerts early next year! They are just preparing the terrain!

Hello Ryan, how came it that you don't have reacted to Spiritbox so far ? They have an awesome groove in their instruments and a good variety of song. Some suggestions: Spiritbox - Rule of Nine Spiritbox - Blessed Be Spiritbox - Holy Roler ( Very Heavy) Spiritbox . Circle with me I hope you sometimes look into it ( there are Live Takes from Cortney singing for Rule of Nine and Holy Roler but they really have extremely nice artful Music Videos you should look at)

Just an example, when band-maid release a soft song, some of them said its to soft. When band-maid release a heavy song, they said its to heavy. Well its up to them, its their opinion even i've got mine, we can make everyone's happy, right. But yeah, some people on reddit just "meh" for some reason, some of them just cant stop complaining + btching around and somehow loves for being a toxic lol 🤣🤣🤣 Btw What a cool way to end the reaction sir.. Never watch anyone did the same thing before.. Damn, its so epic.. You've got the style sir.. You've got the style, Love it.. 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 #bandmaid #takeovertheworld

Sometimes I feel like a crazy street preacher, trying to get people to listen to a band of five young Japanese women in maid costumes. So many get hung up on the maid part, or that they are not singing in English, or that it's an all female band even. And I'm there with just a few minutes to try to convince em to give it a shot, as I work in the music section at a retail store. I may just sound like a weirdo drug addict trying to get people to take the same drug to 99% of the people I talk to about them, but if I can hook that 1% and bring them just that little bit more love, all worth it! Now if I can just sneak some tracks onto the overhead speakers...
