The Germans they caught off guard seemed brutal but they found out they were SS soldiers who were always the most fanatic Nazis and responsible for a lot of brutal deeds carried out including the death camps and killing prisoners of war. Every SS soldier has a tattoo and when the war ended German soldiers were checked and any SS were held while ordinary soldiers were just stripped of their weapons and sent home.

My grandfather fought in Bastogne, where Easy company is arriving at the end of the episode. He died in the 1990s, but until the end of his life he had really bad PTSD from the experience. He was an alcoholic for decades after the war, to the point that my father has a memory of his father having to be held up at a Boy Scout ceremony by two other men, because he was so drunk, while my father received an award. We later found out that our grandfather had gotten into a fight with Volksgrenadier during the Battle of the Bulge, which were basically Hitler Youth (Nazi Boy Scouts like in JoJo Rabbit) that they had ended up having to kill, and so whenever he was around my Dad's Boy Scout troop it would trigger his PTSD bad, and if there was alcohol at the event he was going to hammer it. Grandpa never said this was why he got drunk at the Boy Scout event, or made that excuse, but he did admit to being in a fight with the Hitler Youth kids, and the Americans basically slaughtering them, and he always drank the heaviest around school and Boy Scout events when my father got that age, so it is what we think was going on in his head.

Interesting theory and it's probably pretty true. It's funny that most of us go through life without considering the things we say or do could be someone else's trigger. I noticed it shortly after my dad died from a heart attack and would hear people say things like" you almost gave me a heart attack!" While it didn't trigger any full on PTSD, my thoughts instantly went to my dad's death. We just never know what random things people experience that can remind them of something from their past.

I spent 26 months total in combat. In some people you see the change. They become "children of war" for the lack of a better term. They excel at it. When not in the field they seems lost. Most of these people never completely adjust to life without it. Three of the men in the Combined Action Platoon I commanded became American mercenaries under CIA control after their 2nd or 3rd tour in Vietnam was over. Some of our Australian allies did as well. I considered it, my marriage had broken up since my young wife couldn't handle being married to a guy who was gone for months at a time and might not come back. I understand that an never blamed her. I still had the Marine Corps and stayed in to retire. That pulled me back somewhat to normalcy. Many of us came back, but some of us never really came home. Tom Boyte GySgt. "They're about to walk into the worst thing." For that point in the war, you are correct. The end of the episode was the start of the Battle of the Bulge, where the Germans threw everything they could at the Allies to try and stop their advance. The Americans got knocked back on their heels during the initial attack and . . . well, you'll see for yourself in the next episode . . . which is NUTS!!!!

The town they were moving into to defend is Bastogne. It is a major crossroads (one part of the title) and strategically hugely important. What your are about to see is their portion of "The Battle of the Bulge" a very famous battle. During this the 101st earned the nickname "the Bastard sons of Bastogne". It's not just the 101st but the 82nd airborne division and many other units. The rest of the units were strung out in a line through the Ardennes Forrest. The 101st had the actual town of Bastogne. It is hard to describe the incredible against all odds things that these units pulled off.

True as well. Prewar war games were frequently played out as dropping the Airborne in as a sacrificial unit, to cause havoc and disruption. But the one thing that was usually consistent was that you'd lose that unit entirely. Unless you could break through and link up, they stood no long term chance.

The events at the end, with Easy Company moving into an area that other troops are retreating from, represent the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge. Easy Company and the 501st Airborne Division were moved in to hold Bastogne because they were pretty much the most elite unit that was available, and they were relatively well rested at that time. Obviously, their supply situation was less than optimal, but if you need to hold a place that is about to be surrounded, paratroopers are your best option...as Winters said, being surrounded is their natural condition. 💯✌

Erik Jendresen wrote this episode in particular as it was a life changing time for Winters. Erik has written the band of brothers "bible" and had gotten so close to Winters that he spoke at his funeral. Being so close he felt this was his episode and is probably one of my favorite episodes as far as the turning point in Winter's life. Winters would end every late night conversation with Erik with "I'll be here" and such a simple phrase has stuck with me since hearing it.

Winters is having flashbacks that’s why he keeps staring off doing the thousand yard stare. He’s reliving the advance in his mind as does several combat soldiers do. When this happens time for that person slows down as they relive the events that are traumatic. So when he’s on the train and sees that boy it reminds him of that young SS soldier in the train me I’ve gone on a half hour but in Winters mind only five minutes have passed. Grandfather would talk about World War II and during his stories he would pause and sometimes these pause moments with last five minutes but you could see he was reliving the event that he was about ready to tell you about.. I hope you are prepared for what’s going to come in the remaining episodes…

The real-life encounter at the crossroads was a little different and deeply affected Winters, In the show, you cant see how young that first man was but he was very young and that came back to haunted Winters. I stood on that river where the red devils crossed in Holand, If you want a followup about how big a failure Market Garden was watch a bridge too far. They even have the rescue scene in the end from the British point of view. When I was there it was the 40th anniversary and the last of the British red devils ware there and Easy company men were there. Anyway, it's awesome to see your excitement for this story. My daughter has the same reaction and we ever share Curahee tattoos earned when she graduated college.

The scene at the end of A Bridge Too Far was the withdrawal (codenamed Operation Berlin) of the remaining 2,400 men of 1st Airborne Division after 9 days fighting on the north side of the River Rijn on the night of 25/26 September, leaving behind 300 when it got light, as well as 2,000 dead and 6,000 wounded in German hands. The rescue of 139 British Airborne on the night of 22/23 October seen in this episode (while Winters was typing his After Action Report of the German attack on 5 October) was Operation Pegasus, and a later Operation Pegasus II involving 130-160 Airborne and civilians on 18 November was compromised and was unsuccessful.

You have got to be my favorite reaction person for BoB. You’re really into it. That’s fantastic. The sentry that shot Moose. He was a new guy. Hadn’t been there long. Shooting was an accident so nothing happened to him except he was transferred out. They wasn’t going to let him stick around. The series didn’t go into this but the book did. Easy Company was so good that most of the Battalion & Regimental commanders and staff of 506 Regiment were ex-Easy Company officers. Major Horton who died which allowed Winters to be promoted was the same Major Horton who, back in Episode 1, the guys mimicked his voice in order for Sobel to cut down the fence & let the cows out. Sobel-“Major Horton ordered me to cut down that fence.” Strayer-“Major Horton is on leave…in London.”

Excellent review. All of the episodes of this series are excellent this one has always stood out to me. Its a bit quieter from the fighting standpoint from some of the other episodes but you are correct does an excellent job showing the subtle changes in not just Winters but several of the men as the war begins to take its toll on them. This episode was directed by Tom Hanks, and I for one really appreciate the details he and the writers put into it. You picked up on the Typewriter keys sounding like bullets one of those minor details that a lot of people miss their first time watching only to realize on their 2 or 3rd time watching. Keep up the great work. and PS Everyone loves Winters, a true American Hero in every sense.

During the summer I visited my aunt and her family in the Netherlands... While en route to a museum, I begged my mom to stop at the Crossroads location since I had found it on Google Maps beforehand. The crossroads actually looks almost the same in real life as it does on-screen, although there is a crosswalk (7:14) and some places are blocked off (7:16) with barbed wire fencing (because it is located near a village, I suppose kids could fall in and get hurt). Anyway, the ditch where Easy Company first engaged the Germans is still intact (3:53) and nearby is a memorial dedicated to Dukeman, the only man killed during the engagement. The memorial has a plaque, written in both Dutch and English. I took a photo of the plaque and asked my cousin to read out the Dutch part. She read it aloud to my uncle and although I could understand about 15% of what she said, I think my uncle understood the story a lot better (mind you, they can understand and speak English very well). Later on, he drove us to a local cemetery dedicated to British soldiers and there were a few graves marked for 18-20 year olds (which was difficult for my mom and aunt to fathom because I was 22 at the time, now 23). War is absolute hell and it's almost jarring to imagine soldiers my age and sometimes younger going to war.

If I remember correctly, that was Winters’ only confirmed kill throughout the war. He did what he had to do but the kid (around 16 years old) he shot was helpless and unarmed; however, if Winters hesitated during the assault the whole camp would be aware of them and could take out Easy. It was kill or be killed and Winters made the right choice but that kid still haunted him for the rest of his life. A bit of context, during this battle Winters was 26 years old. The SS recruited from the Hitler Youth so they had soldiers as young as 16.

A quick note about Jimmy Fallon's cameo. The character he is playing is a true-blue American hero. Second Lieutenant George Rice made nine separate trips in a jeep that was towing a trailer back and forth from a nearby supply depot to Bastogne in order to bring what ammo he could to the troops digging in against the German advance. He did this on his own volition. His last trip was technically made after the Germans had surrounded the town, meaning he could have easily been captures or killed. The only reason he didn't make a tenth trip was because he was specifically ordered by his CO to stand down.

That scene where Winters is drinking coffee at the curb cafe in Paris and you can hear the other guys in the background going, “You know what I had to do in basic … I ate rats.” For a seasoned veteran talking about boot camp is the most booter thing ever. So you’ve got a guy who’s done two combat jumps and fought in two campaigns and he’s hearing a bunch of booters talk about booter stuff. That scene flies over most peoples heads who aren’t veterans.

I eventually realized that great leaders need to be promoted. The good he does, in saving lives and winning battles, needs to extend beyond Easy Company towards the whole war effort in general. Though downplayed and mocked by pop culture and external viewers, Winters getting bumped up to XO was logistics serendipity to be one of the men who reconstituted enough of a battalion to be available just when it was desperately needed.

By this point, Winters is no longer just handling Easy Company, but all the 9 companies that make up the 2nd Battalion which he leads. He is missing his old Easy bois but that's what usually happens when you move up the ladder.

Fleeing soldiers are - odd as it might sound - perfectly valid military targets; it is only after a soldier or unit *surrenders* that it becomes illegal to attack them. Fleeing, retreating, panickedly routing, sleeping or in any other way completely unprepared military unit is not only a valid target, but a rare jackpot - a perfect oportunity to score a lot of damage. All fighting forces therefore also ensure to not be caught off guard, sleep in rotations etc. As for the accidental friendly fire - it is usually not punished (provided it was truly accidental!), because of the danger inherent in the job either way, and because you'd be surprised how common friendly fire is - especially in the dark, when guard units are sleep deprived, jittery, etc.

I heard somewhere that the guy who brought the ammo in the Jeep played by Jimmy Fallon is actually related to Jimmy himself.

It barely showed one of the drivers of those trucks that drove Easy Company from Holland to Belgium. “The Red Ball Express”. Unsung heroes of the European Campaign. African-American unit whose job was to drive those trucks loaded with supplies & men all over Europe-France, Netherlands, Belgium, etc. At its peak was 6,000 trucks moving 12,500 tons of supplies & equipment PER DAY. The trucks had a red ball on the side of the truck & they had priority. Everybody else were force to step aside. Don’t be taken in by the fact that Europe is a continent. The countries aren’t that big. Paris France across France & Netherlands to Bastogne Belgium is only about 200 miles. 2/3 of US states are bigger than most of Europe’s nations.

My great-uncle Russell fell in The Battle of the Bulge. The largest land engagement in the history of the United States Army, 600,000 Americans fought in it, then add in the other Allied nations fighting in alongside them opposing in Germans in Hitler's last desperate bid to turn the tide and you realize the scope of this. Just as an aside FYI among the many units fighting at The Battle of the Bulge was the all-Black 761st Tank Battalion aka 'The Black Panthers' (motto: 'Come Out Fighting' The unit list for this battle was amazing tho

Just to help set the scene for next episode, It was so unbelievably cold in bastogne, soldiers were freezing to death overnight, Soldiers had to urinate on weapons to thaw them out to use, And this combined with no waterproof boots, And uniforms designed for summer in Europe, It was hell on earth.

Some people don't know this, but the reason Winters checked Liebgot's ammo was because he was wasting ammo by picking off the straggling Germans. His point was "you only have one round because of this stupid stunt you pulled, now you need to escort these prisoners. What happens if one attacks you and you need to kill him?" He was making sure he had enough ammo in case he needed to kill more prisoners if they jumped him. THAT is leadership, ladies and gents.
