Scott Grimes, the actor who plays Tech Sergeant Donald Malarkey, discusses a pivotal installment in the series, where after a daring night patrol, the men of Easy Company begin to believe that surviving the war may actually be possible. Grimes reflects on how on “Band of Brothers” helped the real Donald Malarkey open up about the experiences he had kept bottled up for so long, and the profound impact Malarkey’s transformation had on Grimes as an actor and human being.

How amazing, and so heartbreaking, to see 90-year old former soldiers, some incredibly tough men who had survived some of the most intense experiences in human history, yet still cry over incidents that had happened 50 or so years before.

I think that's one of the most remarkable things about Band of Brothers; Even though there was an endless variety of personalities, voices and stories...everyone involved contributed such a master class performance, every voice stood out. It's actually incredible if you think about it.

If you read David Kenyon Webster's book " PARACHUTE INFANTRY" written immediately after his wartime experiences he states that coming back to Easy Company after his hospitalization was like coming back to a loving family, not at all like the scenes in B.O.B??? It's a true pity he died so young, his addition to the series would have added even more realism and shock as to the treatment of wounded German prisoners.

I read Don's memoir. You could feel the emotional scars in that book. And Johnny Martin, although he didn't write a book, i can always feel his emotions when he talks on camera. Like he is so broken he's just barely keeping it together.

I was working at my friend's rock store in San Francisco, selling rocks and crystals and such, when this guy walked in and we talked. For some reason, I mentioned Band of Brothers, maybe I had watched it the night before and I was still living with it in my head and he said he was a physical therapist, and that he worked with Don Malarkey to help him with his hands, which still were affected by the cold and frostbite from the Battle of the Bulge. I questioned him for an hour and finally, he told me, that although he wasn't a psychotherapist of any kind, Malarky opened up to him about his experiences and so I (I had been trained as a journalist) questioned him relentlessly to find out everything Malarky had said. I always asked any vets I met about their war experience, but when I realized I knew this man who had been with Malarky who had been at every battle and suffered through every moment of Easy's long years of travail, I just had to talk with him about it. Roger, you have done such a great job, I know I will be listening to these podcasts again also.

@nickgraff9413

@@daveyboy_ Band of Brothers was the first series to be completely honest about the war, in a way that no other movies had been. Saving Private Ryan will always have the most intense, true to life combat sequence for Omaha Beach, but Band of Brothers portrayed the war as it was fought. I've watched a lot of the old war movies, and pretty much every single one missed the true horrors of combat, and after Saving Private Ryan helped break that taboo, Band of Brothers just feels authentic, and that's in no small part due to Capt. Dale Dye, a combat veteran who made it real. There's no one man assaults, or cliched action sequences that Hollywood churned out back then, and still continues to churn out. John Wayne isn't charging at the enemy, Clint Eastwood isn't staring down a tank and daring the commander to shoot, Brad Pitt isn't holding off a German assault with just his tank and crew. Instead, we've got a group of guys and their stories from the war that actually happened. We see the harsh reality of war as portrayed in a way that isn't glamorous, but respectful of the sacrifices these men made. There's no glory, no honor, just men who went to fight, who want to end the war, and come home.
