Damian Lewis - the Emmy® and Golden Globe® award-winning actor - whose portrayal of Major Dick Winters is the centrifugal force of Band of Brothers - joins host Roger Bennett to reflect on why a classically-trained, well-heeled Englishman was cast as a salt-of-the-earth American war hero, and why two decades later, Band of Brothers remains more than just a job.

First discovered D. Lewis w Stephen King's, " Dream Catcher" fabulous performance. So when he showed up again in "Homeland", another stellar performance I nearly stopped watching if not for Clair and Manny. And "Billions", (Bobby "Axe" Axelrod) easily my favorite show. Very, very sorry for your loss mate. But, I hope he will continue acting, for he is Brilliant.

On the relationship between Nixon and Winters, he said that part of the reason they worked together so well was because in the morning Winters was at his best and Nixon wasn’t because he was hungover, but as the day wore on Nixon would start to come into himself as Winters wore out

20 years later, and BoB is still the gold standard of docu-dramas. These podcasts just show why. The cast and the writer knew they were doing something important. Thank you HBO for now creating these pod-casts but also knowing 20 years ago that these stories need to be told by the people who lived them.

The German general’s speech is always so profound to me. I think it’s maybe the best moment of the series. Winters’ face says it all there when listening. That scene titles the series right there. It always chokes me up even more and is nice listening to, considering that I know German. Liebgott did a great job translating. It’s pretty much perfect. Damian gives one of the all-time great performances, for me, on television, and I will never forget it and the memory of Winters. It was a large part of my childhood. Thank you for these.

wish the german general would have told them if they had had a set of balls at the beginning and refused to attack other countries for a luntic leader, then they really would have been couragous, but the square jawed general missed that part.

@@barkeater7867 I guess I understand somewhat what you’re saying, but perhaps also disagree. A General does not condemn his men after surrender, plus the British and French had quite a hand in the war’s beginning, I’d say.

@@barkeater7867 You seriously need to go away and learn why the German people were so receptive to Hitler. The reparations Germany were forced to pay, after WWI, and the restrictions on what the German government could do post-WWI, crippled Germany and drove the people into Hitler's arms. The Allies were definitely a major part of the reason Hitler swept to power in the late 1920's.

My dad knew Mike Ranney in college, they were in the same fraternity. Dad was Glider Infantry in the 17th AB, he was one of 55 guys in his platoon to walk into the Battle of the Bulge, and then was one of only 5 that walked out 45 days later. He then went over the Rhine in a glider in Operation Varsity on March 24, '45. (Bronze Star, Purple Heart) He never knew Mike Ranney was in WWII until reading Ambrose's book. They just never talked about the war years.

I had a great uncle who died in pretty much the same way as Janovec, in May 1945, just as the war ended. He was on a supply run in France and hit a pothole on his motorbike. He's just another name on the war memorial in my town in central England. As an aside, my patriarchal side of the family comes from the US. I found out only recently that I have a great uncle who served in Charlie company, 101st.

A beautifully timed podcast series. Well done Roger and all those interviewed. I have had a passion for military history since a teenager of the 70s however until Saving Private Ryan and then BoB it was always the fascination of the events, the machines, the equipment and the merchandise that was associated to WW2. These productions finally made it about the men and the wider people. A production that will be analysed for generations to come and deservedley so.

No way. The European theater didn't involve kamikaze attacks, cannibalism, desecration, torture, all kinds of horrific violence against POWs. The Eastern front was awful, but neither side practiced cannibalism and suicide attacks. You clearly know very little of the Pacific theater. The Marines were fighting in jungle. Jungle warfare is far worse than fighting in civilized land. A German general once said that jungle warfare was the worst because even if you're not in combat, the jungle will kill you. Were there venomous snakes, spiders, scorpions in the European theater? All kinds of biting and stinging insects (except for mosquitos)? Did men contract malaria? Hepatitis? Jungle rot? You have no idea.
