As a retired O-6, you NEVER dress down an officer in front of his men. “Praise in public, correct in private.” That finger point was petty and demeaning. LT Winters had every right to refuse that illegitimate command.

Bad leadership.

I read that Sobel was rude as an officer. He wrote soldiers and officers under him for perry reasons.

Yeah bad leadership especially in civilian world. Never correct men in public, but in private. This is humiliating

I think Sobel knew Winters was winning some favor among the men, so he tells Winters to trump up some BS infractions and disciplinary recommendations in order to try and turn the men of Easy Company against Winters. Sobel had a rigidity that makes for a great trainer/instructor, but combat command demands a degree of flexibility he just didn't have, and his men knew it.
@garystefanski7227Ай бұрын
The finger thing he did show what a petty tyrant he was.
@dubbekingАй бұрын
Worst part, his only excuse for behaving this way were some extremely minor infractions after purposefully pushing them way too hard. Dude knew he was a sham, and needed to act all outraged to cover it up. Absolute chickenshit.

Any boss ever put their finger in my face we'd have a problem
@EKUgrad1Ай бұрын
Capt. Sobel's infractions should have been on that list.
@TheStopShortАй бұрын
Best part was he wrote up six guys on chumped-up infractions like he said, amd assigned them all to latrine duty. Why? Because it was THEIR TURN 😂

Winters shouldn't have eaten half his sandwich and thrown it in the trash. There was a dwindling supply of moistmakers in WWII and that was downright un-American

@aumarigan there's videos here on KZbin of reporters that interviewed E Company members and men (who were alive) during the "Band of Brothers" filming.

Sobel and his training standards was the reason many of them made it home alive....just couldnt read a compass or lead men worth a shit, had a sad death as well
@meltonfire8 ай бұрын
I can see that. Sobel was hard and I can see that hardness making the men better, to some degree.
@executivedirector74678 ай бұрын
It's some combination of Sobel and other leaders such as Winters and NCOs. I suspect if Sobel hadn't lucked out with subordinate leaders who led the men through his shit the company would not have turned out how it did. But fair point; he WAS in command when Easy co was built.

@@executivedirector7467 We'll just say Sobel got them in physical shape. The other leaders did the rest... some what. LoL.

@@micanopykracker694 At least one of the NCOs said Sobel "made" Easy company. Seems pretty obvious to me that he was such an SOB that he gave all the men something to cohere around. Then the good leaders such as Winters etc got them trained.
@ogrehaslayers60510 ай бұрын
Not the way to train men. That's how you paint a target on your back during combat.

@maximusjackassicus304218 күн бұрын
It's actually an excellent way to train them, but it's a horrible way to lead them. Sobel would have been a good drill sergeant for basic training but would have been a terrible terrible leader in the field.

It wasn’t that he was a dick and petty AF that turned the men, it was his lack of ability and confidence in leading them in combat or even war games that was his downfall. Had he been a brilliant tactical fighter and leader his extreme want for discipline wouldn’t have mattered and would have made sense.

I hate people like sobel so much. He's a boss not a leader, in a position of authority by virtue of his rank not his ability. Content to simply bark orders then complain when they don't meet his arbitrary standards. I don't know much about the real sobel, so I can't say how accurate this portrayal is.
@meltonfire16 күн бұрын
I remember reading in one of the comments that Sobel ended up committing suicide. Not sure if that is accurate or not. I do know I would hate to be Sobel and see how Band of Brothers portrayed me. Even if it was accurate.
