Shoutout to BM's longtime choreographer Mikiko "Mikikometal" Mizuno too. She's the senpai to BM, Sakura Gakuin (BM's parent group) & Perfume (BM's agency seniors), having in her early twenties taught at performing arts school ASH (which various group members had attended as kids). Talent-scouted by Amuse Inc, she was personally sent to the USA to study stage production in her late twenties. After her return, she became all three groups' principal choreographer & also permitted to form her own artistic performance troupe Elevenplay (whose trusted members had danced anonymously for BM as a contingency). Like BM, she knew nothing about metal music at the outset, but is an amazingly intuitive & expressionistic choreographer who kept consistently creating visceral dance routines that mesh perfectly with the propulsive music (like the frenetic fingerpointing for Gimme Choco), lyrical content (the head wobble for Headbanger), even cultural references (the geisha dance during Megitsune) & current trends (the chest pump during Leave It All Behind). Despite receiving multiple industry honors & a busy schedule (she was even involved with the performance segments for both the 2016 &, before it was canceled, 2020 Summer Olympics ceremonies), she still set aside time to work with both Perfume & BM to this day. Overall, Team Babymetal is a collective effort: the BM trio & assorted former fill-ins, the East & West Kamis, sound manipulator/engineer Hidefumi Usami, Kobametal & his songwriters/producers, the Babybones hype men, Mikikometal, costume designer Masaki Noguchi of TARKS, all the fantastic set builders, plus most importantly the concert attendees who knew the crowd participation parts by heart & are determined to let their voices be heard. That's why BM concerts are so good.

Yes they are young. This show was Dec 21 2013, celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday the day before. Moa and Yui were 14 here. Yeah, I had the wtf look too when I first saw this video , it was my introduction to the group. Other reactors have started with this as well, and shared that look, lol. Once I got passed that, I noticed the instruments, especially the drums. The band , and the girls , are just non stop.

Welcome back, great reaction again. This was the video that went viral in 2014 (it was filmed at their Legend 1997 concert on 21st December 2013 celebrating lead singer Su-metal's 16th birthday - she was born 20/12/97. Yuimetal and Moametal were both 14). The audio is from the studio recording ... their live audio is better as you get the live vocals (their studio recordings tend to have the vocals compressed and over-produced ... unnecessarily) and the Kami Band's live instrumentals. 'Gimme Chocolate' is one of their fun songs - they just want chocolate but are a bit worried about their weight. But chocolate, it would be so nice and they would be so happy, can they just have a piece of chocolate please?🍫🍫🍫 2013 was the year they separated from the parent group (Sakura Gakuin) to become an independent band in their own right - Legend 1997 was the final stage and the last big show where the Babybones (fake band in skeleton suits waving guitars round) were on stage. The Kami Band came on for the last 5 songs and became the full time support for all live shows from the next big concerts at the Budokan in March 2014 - the first album was also released just before those concerts. GAnimal83 has provided an excellent breakdown for the time line, who is who in the Kami Band etc for you in the comments below. The choreography is a big part of what BABYMETAL do and what sets them apart. It is bespoke for each song (and yes they are relentless keeping up that same energy and precision for every song in every concert - they must be beyond Olympic athlete levels of fitness) and is often interpretive, relating to the meaning of the song or a lyric (very helpful for those of us who speak no Japanese), but the main function is to involve and lead the crowd, to get everybody involved and joining in - they give the crowd their cues to jump, pump their fist, chant or whatever. It is unlike dancing you may be familiar with from pop acts etc, so you will never see any suggestive or dubious moves, no spread legs, grabbed crotches or whatever.

Brings back memories. I was a fan of theirs a few months when this came out. Three of the hardest working young ladies in the business. Not only do they dance the whole song, they do it for every song in the show. And like the Ramones, there is very little time between songs, To me a Babymetal show is a cross between Rammstein and the Ramones; the theatricality of Rammstein, and the relentlessness of the Ramones. I love this song. It just sits in E, but is E Phrygian in the verse and switches to E Major in the chorus. You don't play major chords in metal, I love how they shook up the rules. Iconic.

Great reaction! As you said, Babymetal is absolutely incredible and blends the J-pop and Metal genres so well, along with many other influences. This particular video went viral in 2014 and propelled Babymetal onto the world stage and heavily assisted their entry into the Western music scene. *A couple of things to note that may assist with your future analysis:* 1). On Babymetal's official channel: Only videos with *Live* in the title will have the actual live audio (e.g., your reaction to Brand New Day). Everything else will be studio audio (be it an MV, or over live video, e.g., Gimme Chocolate). 2). You can use various fan channels that put up solid concert BluRay footage with live video, live audio, and subtitles. A good one is "For the Fox God". 3). Babymetal's band, the Kami Band only backs Babymetal for their live, but is not on the studio audio. Those are recorded with studio musicians. *On the Kami Band:* 1). The guys in the Skeleton Costumes such as in this video are "Baby Bones", a fake band pretending to play, with the music on backing tracks. Early on, Babymetal didn't have the budget for a full live band, and at the time of this video's concert (Dec 2013), Babymetal just got big in Japan. This particular show (Legend 1997), had 1st 9 songs with Baby Bones, and the 5-song encore with the actual Kami Band. 2). Kami East backed Babymetal since 2012, but for Encores only, then fully since 2014 for all live shows. 3). Kami West was added in 2019 to assist with increased touring, then became their sole backing band since Apr 2023. Kami East played their last show with Babymetal in Jan 2023. 4). Kami Band is strictly live only and does not take part in studio recordings. Hence, we always suggest live, because the Kami Band is absolutely amazing. *Kami East Members:* Mikio Fujioka (Guitar, RIP, Jan 2018) Takayoshi Ohmura (Guitar) Leda Cygnus (Guitar) Bohte "BOH" Daisuke (Bass) Hideki Aoyoma (Drums) _** There are a few other members that switch in and out over the years, but the above 5 are the core._ *Kami West Members:* Chris Kelly (Guitar) CJ Masciantonio (Guitar) Clint Tustin (Bass) Ryan Neff (Bass) Anthony Barone (Drums) _** Chris, CJ, and Clint were members of the Star Wars-themed metal band, Galactic Empire. Anthony was the ex-drummer for Shadow of Intent. Clint is usually present for major arena shows, and Ryan has done a solid chunk of regional tours for Babymetal._ Look forward to more Babymetal!! 🤘🦊

I saw this when it went viral a decade ago, loved it, but didn't follow them beyond this one song (there really wasn't much about them at the time to be fair). A few years later, "Road of Resistance, Live in Japan" from their official site popped up in a feed, I watched it, and it was so incredible that I started to look for everything I could find. From there I've been able to watch hundreds of individual performances and dozens of concerts, they are just incredible.

Nice one, thanks! "Gimme Chocolate" is "just" a fun song about the girls wanting to eat chocolate but being a little worried worried about their weight. But, yeah those instrumentals are very, very metal and the juxtaposition with the cute vocals, lyrics and choreo was totally the point of the song and the reason why this music video went viral back in 2014. Helping them a lot tbh. It's their most "popular" song but probably not their best one. But that doesn't stop it from being a blast when they play it live. This music video has the studio version of the audio over the visuals from the concert Legend 1997 held to celebrate Su-metal's (the lead singer) 16th birthday. It was the song's live premiere. Yes, their backing band is the Kami Band, Unfortunately, they are not in this video: the guys in skeleton costumes (called "babybones") were there pretending to play the instruments while the music was in a backing track (Su-metal always sing live). It was like this because they couldn't afford and actual band at first. The real Kami Band was introduced progressively since October 2012 and they replaced the "babybones" for good since March 2014. And yes, they have always been this good. Most people just see three little Japanese girls dancing around to metal, but the fact is that they already were huge professionals at the time. And they were like that from the very first moment BABYMETAL was formed in 2010. They were 12 and 11 years old and yes, it's crazy. 🤘🦊

The best Metal song ever about wanting to eat some chocolate. 🦊🤘🤘🦊 The original WTF? reaction video! The epitome of the whole concept of Kawaii (Cute) Metal, as created by their producer, KobaMetal. Su, Moa and Yui dancing with some excellent Metal playing over (sorry, this part of the show didn't have a live band and the Kami band just played live for the last 5 songs) Su's live vocals was so confusing the first time I saw it (2015) but it opened the whole world of Japanese Metal and Rock for me - Babymetal, Band-Maid, Lovebites, Asterism, Hanabie, Otoboke Beaver and many, many others - and, apart from a special mention in dispatches to The Warning, the reason I rarely look West for music in the 21st century. Try Ijime, Dame, Zettai live at Sonisphere, which was Babymetal's first Metal festival appearance outside Japan, in front of 60,000 UK Metalheads. It's an iconic performance and shows the skills of The Kami Band live as well as the confidence of the girls - kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKCQkJaYm8mlj6csi=0CQtGunDmCG8ICHi . Back in 2021, SuMetal said that it was one of the highlights of her career as she knew after their performance and the crowd reaction that they could break into the western Metal market.

First time I saw Babymetal I was about like you. I was thinking we have these sweet cute little girls that are exceptionally choreographed with a heavy metal band behind them, kind of prancing around the stage in what should almost be wrong, but I sat back and said "well, it sure as hell works!". I believe you are correct, there is really no other group that compares. With that said, at the time of this video if your 10 years was correct, the girls were around 15-16 years old and had already been together for at least 4 or 5 years. The Kami band has had around 20 different members, and started out with the kind of fake skeleton outfits, but they were retired right around when this video came out, in 2015 I believe. Babymetal lost one member, Yui_Metal in 2018 due to health reasons. At first they tried just the two girls, then went back to three. One also has to give credit to the song writers as they keep coming out with hits, and whoever works on producing their concerts is a production genius. They have played to over 55,000 in Tokyo on consecutive nights, somewhat demonstrating how popular they are. Although in their mid-20s now, and not putting out the same amount of content, they continue to dominate. Now, just to see something different you need to check out some K-pop, probably BlackPink since they are by far the most popular K-pop group and also have been around for quite some time. Maybe something from the earlier period like Kill This Love M/V. Think of a more mature BabyMetal, lol. The Asian rabbit hole goes down a long, long way, lol.

Would also love to see you check out some of the music from Bravely Default, composed by Revo. Specifically, I recommend Serpent Eating the Ground (aka Serpent Eating the Horizon), which is the final boss music and pulls from the whole game, especially the four main characters' leitmotifs. Also, a fan of the Ba'al Turtle Dove theme, which goes for a creepier vibe.

⚡ 💀 💕 / 🍫 💝 BABYMETAL have been joined on stage for this song by members of Korn, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and DragonForce. Not all at the same time of course. : ) This whole concept of combining JPop music with metal could have been a disaster, but the quality of the singing, songwriting, choreography and staging take it to another level. 'Gimme Chocolate!!' is definitely one of their "poppier" tracks. Even so, that blast beat gets you. And the whole thing is about 10x heavier live. This is the studio track over the live 'LEGEND 1997' concert footage which celebrated Su-metal's 16th birthday. That was actually the world premiere of this song. Of course the choreography, etc. is already dialed in. Su's vocals at the live concert sounded great, they could have used that for the video. This show started off with the "Baby Bones" guys in skeleton suits pretending to play instruments, including this song, but the live Kami Band finished the show with a five song encore. The KZbin music video has almost 200 million views. If you would like to see a version with live musicians, etc., search KZbin for "Gimme Chocolate Stephen Colbert". That was a great live performance on 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert'.

@@bobcieslinski Just to take away the confusion, Legend 1997 stands for Su-metal's birth date, and the concert is in celebration of her 16th birthday. They play quite a few concerts to celebrate their birthday. The video of this Gimme Chocolate!! music video is from the same concert, but Headbanger is backed with an actual band (Kami Band) which performed the last few songs of the set. The whole concert tells a story about Susuka the Idol turning into a metal goddes Su-metal. The first song (after the Ave Maria intro) is a spectacular dubstep mix version of headbanger (this is NOT the version @tanewoodley9806 wants you to react to) where she is actually lip-syncing. Then later they play with the babybones (the fake band). Then as a gift from the Foxgod; Yui and Moa (the two dancers) bring down the Kami band from heaven(?) to play 3 of the last 4 songs of the set. The last three songs in this particular concert (they are different in other concerts) are named by the fans "The Trilogy of Death". Eventually people will ask to try each of those songs, so you may want to watch them in order. Headbanger, Akitsuki (unfinished version), Babymetal Death.

Thanks for taking a listen to this one, Bob. I see plenty of other people had filled you in on the details, so I'll make a comparison/observation instead. Babymetal and another Japanese band that you've seen, Wagakki Band, are both crossover bands that offer the music scene something the world hasn't really seen before. Wagakki is rock and traditional Japanese instruments while Babymetal is pop and metal, but both bands gave us something new and got really big really fast. There's still so much room in music for innovation and originality. As far as a suggestion goes, I'd like to recommend the song "Monochrome" from Babymetal's most recent album. However, there's two versions that are worth checking out. The first is the live version from Pia Arena; a channel called For The Fox God has a good version with English subtitles if you want them. It is _gorgeous_ and touching. The second version is from the channel The First Take, a channel where Japanese artists come in and have one shot at a song. "Monochrome" was the first of two songs performed on The First Take by Babymetal, though it was the last release before Momoko Okazaki was officially announced as the newest member of the group and became Momometal. As such, she doesn't appear in the performance on The First Take. It's still haunting and delicate and lovely and shows off just how great Su-metal is on vocals. Maybe a double reaction someday?

Great reaction. This song is pure manic energy. Pychoticaly heavy, but happy and fun. Not their greatest song, but not bad either (they don't have bad songs, just epic and not quite as epic as others :) I'm sure this song and it's choreography was partly a self aware parody of kawaii culture, and took the concept of kawaii metal to it's extremes. It's viral popularity was both a blessing and a curse, it was used to falsely paint them as a gimmick rather than them just bringing fun to metal, but it didn't do them any harm in the long run, and may have brought in more fans than any other song (apart from ratatata). It's just one aspect of Babymetal's evolving dynamism.

Many members of The One will say that this song isn't among BABYMETAL's best - I beg to differ. Although BABYMETAL does have many songs that are better, this song defines what BABYMETAL is: heavy metal pleasantly mixed with J-pop without missing a beat - kawaii metal at its best, and one of the best videos of the "Yui Era". For more excellent BABYMETAL content, allow me to suggest the KZbin playlist "BABYMETAL Top Twenty" ( kzbin.info/aero/PLdhz2aj0pt4zPl0BZLevPUR9uHKQA27uj ). Keep rockin’ BABYMETAL!!! KITSUNE UP!!! 🤘🦊🤘
