I have the original, first release of the Sideshow Battle Droid 2-pack, and I thought they would be rather stiff, but their movement is beyond impressive, and they have joints everywhere they would be on an actual machine in real life. They can really get some character with their movements, and balancing isn't much of an issue. The weathering is really nice, as well! The only issues I have with them are the rather loose thumbs that can't hold the blaster tightly without clamping the fingers down all the way, the slightly undersized blasters that don't fit both front fingers in the guard, and the backpacks that, while tight enough when the droids are upright, can fall out if you accidentally tilt them backwards while posing.

I don't really care if the helmet is a little too big. Like you said Robo, it's just look like a skinny stormtrooper, and I'm good with that. I always loved 12 inch figures from Hot Toys and Sideshow but they are so expensive. Right here I see a good opportunity to buy a 1/6 scale figure for a good price AND fun to have because you actually build the figure!

I just finish this kit (yes couple of years late) and couple of things strikes me: - the big helmet doesn’t bug me as much in real life. This figure is gorgeous. Somehow any photos I took didn’t do the real thing any justice. - the thing is chunky as f**k. It’s hefty. Heavy. A lot of plastics. Which I like.

The head is distractingly big imo, but what I feel everyone is missing is the torso being too small. @KyleTheDalek8 жыл бұрын
Was so excited for this, I don't get how they made the head that bit bigger I thought they would have just doubled the size of the sculpt at the factory. I still like it, maybe it is the rogue one armour (sorry British with our extra Us) And the eyes do look larger. I can't remember you saying but I feel the shoulders jointing with the arms looks gappy. But I still really want it, maybe they will perfect it later if the line does good, and man I want more in that scale (if they are perfect or just lie the 6") I'm a bit disappointed because bandai are usually amazing at kits and the majority of their Figuarts. Touch/knock on wood.
@TheFwoosh8 жыл бұрын
The sculpt is all new so it wasn't doubled at the factory, it was sculpted that way and sent. So it had to have been done intentionally. And I didn't say anything about the shoulders although I probably should have, but with the models I'm used to shunting the arms a little forward to close the gap, didn't think to do that here.
@KyleTheDalek8 жыл бұрын
The Fwoosh yeah that's a fair point forgot about the helmet improvements and such. I hope it was intentionally, but I honestly can't remember any of them having helmets that big. And I also feel a little bad but just before the 5 min mark made me laugh a little, I think it was the first time I heard you getting ticked off with a figure.

@Arnoldiepin8 жыл бұрын
His head's too big but I think the change in the size and shape of the eyes in particular really throws the authentic stormtrooper look off, which is brilliant on the 6 inch kit. Also surely if the change in the mask sculpt is meant to reflect the slightly weird rogue one stormtroopers they'd have stills from that movie rather than ANH on the box - so i don't understand why they've tampered with the head sculpt! The model kits are brilliant - only thing i'd change is the hands; they could so easily be sculpted to look more like real human hands in gloves than the slightly pointy almost cartoon deal they've got going on (which is more noticeable with the larger scale)
@TheFwoosh8 жыл бұрын

Great review Robo! I been wondering about this but just by watching your review I thought of something. And i didn't think of it til the end, when you could clearly see the ballhinged shoulder balljoint. But when you were doing the articulation you mentioned how the shoulder pad didn't necessarily flip up for outer arm swing, but shifted and swiveled. I think it's to cover up those unsightly gaps by swiveling over like it's rolling kinda Try that & lmk if that works. I may yet get this but I'd like to find it cheaper than $83.99. Any ideas where it's cheaper?
@TheFwoosh8 жыл бұрын
The shoulder pad doesn't swivel so it wouldn't turn to hide the gap. But if you butterfly the shoulder a little forward it would hide that. The things you miss when doing a review at 5 AM, haha. And the price will probably go down soon when more third party sellers get them up on Amazon.

The Fwoosh *edit* Thanks for Checking actually I think it was close to 5am when I left the comment. IIRC, I woke up & watched the review. suppose it could be earlier. Anyways looking forward to seeing what else this line comes out with. Darth Vader will be next if anyone. (just in case you read this already in threw edit up there to get your attention possibly) Ok so you mentioned he looked different. Meant to ask, why did you switch from a green background to blue? How long until we get a 12" Sandtrooper model? Thanks for including that Disney Vader comparison. You're right. Vader is too shrimpy to pass for 1:6 scale. Oh well. How much did this model cost you?
@TheFwoosh8 жыл бұрын
The model cost about $70 before shipping. I wouldn't think it would take too long before we see a Sandtrooper. Mostly reuse with only a different knee and ab piece, along with the gear. I changed from the green after my old camera bit the big one. When I started messing with new cameras I realized that the colors weren't coming out right unless I used a blue background, so I switched until I could learn more about the new camera settings. Never went back, haha. It's just more of a Fwooshy color and people seemed to like it more.
@yokaicustoms8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it looks good! Just curious. I guess one negative (maybe?) for a sandtrooper is that it would require a lot of weathering/painting to get it to look right. A clean sandtrooper is just wrong.

Very true, but they did it with the 6 inch models, and actually made the Sandtrooper a little better with the adjustable brow and longer neck. And then they put a tutorial on their site for weathering the troops and painting the R2 units. Crazy Bandai.

I'm happy with mine. I have just a few minor nitpicks. Like the whole thing with the hands swapping parts for the trigger or open. That was completely unnecessary and obviously just cutting corners.. just give a full extra set of hands... it couldn't have hurt the cost to make them, it's half a hand! Haha Love that they finally gave us more articulation in the wrist. The 1:12 scale figures need to adopt something similar. It makes a big difference with posing. Also the blue lines that go on each side of the helmet... I had a bitch with trying to get each side symmetrical with each other. And I'm sure I still don't have them exactly lined up perfect with each side, but I gave up and said good enough :P And the helmet should be a little bit smaller, but not so much as it ruined the figure for me. I like the range of the articulation Other than those, I really enjoyed the build and finished product.
@TheFwoosh8 жыл бұрын
It's crazy they didn't put sculpted lines on the helmet where the blue stripes go, like the smaller ones. Especially since on the actual movie helmets the Rogue One helmets have the stripes sculpted and the OT helmets don't. I can see them not doing these wrist joints at 1:12, at least how they are here. Already small at 1:6, can't imagine them at half size. But I want them anyway, haha. According to some who do a lot of Gundam kits, the interchangeable fingers are how Bandai does all of the larger kits, so I guess it made sense to do that here. And yeah, I could have went for a slightly smaller helmet but this is still going on a shelf. Somewhere. Gotta make more shelves....

@cissuperdroid8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the lack of need for decals is to be expected from a kit of this scale- Bandai has always taken advantage of their larger-sized models by applying superior parts and color-separation, which means the bigger pieces allow for more molded detail that can poke through to give texture to what were once stickers. (much more below) As a Gundam kit builder, I can tell you that this can be observed on Master Grade Gundam models in 1/100 scale, as opposed to their smaller, less detailed High Grade counterparts in 1/144 scale. The need for softer plastic parts in the joints is not as strange as it may seem- the "PC-00(insert number here)" runners are a necessity for most Gunpla kits and even Kotobukiya kits, and are called "polycaps," which are inserted into most joints to create more friction and longevity while posing, rather than the brittle plastic-on-plastic that one might expect. The areas where the runners attach to the parts are called "gates," and the marks left when one cuts the parts out are either called "gate marks," or simply "nub marks." You are lucky that most Star Wars kits have the gates attached underneath, using a technique called "under-gating," which leaves non-obtrusive gate marks that are out of the way. Very few Gundam kits are under-gated, meaning Gunpla enthusiasts must clean up those blemishes very aggresively, or simply live with them, as with K-2SO. Maybe Bandai's team on K-2 treated it more like a Gundam mech because it was a droid, and failed to under-gate it?

I REALLY want to get this just because I'm a star wars junkie but I really want to resist buying it also.. because I barely have enough room for my 6" stuff. haha I really wish the blue parts were indented on the cheeks/jaw though, then you could just paint them instead of pretty much having to do waterslides becuase that's a lot of straight lines to paint. Nice review though!
@TheFwoosh8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it really surprised me that on the bigger scale they didn't indent those stripes. Even more weird, the Rogue One troopers actually have those indented while the old classic troopers didn't.

Looks really good at 1/6 scale. However, I'm not sure if the head is big or if the torso is just a bit small to allow for arm articulation. It almost has a "REBELS" look to it, without being cartooney. At any rate stop tempting me to spend more money Robo!! Cheers!
@TheFwoosh8 жыл бұрын
Hmm, yeah, the proportions are kind of Rebels looking, I didn't even realize that.

I grabbed this batch from CDJapan but it looks like they got busted and pulled all of the kits down.

Where can I get this?
@TheFwoosh8 жыл бұрын
I got this on CDJapan before they pulled down all of the model kits, but it should hit Amazon soon if it's not already up there.

Ok. Thns

The Fwoosh DD: goddamnit, any idea where I might find them?

ManoBey12 They should hit Amazon soon from third party sellers in China. Usually takes a bit to ship but prices usually aren't terrible.

Im not 100% but knowing the DLT-19 (long) blaster rifle, because I have built a 1-1 3D Printed one, It looks like the rear sight has a moulding peg still on it. Its difficult to see without a closeup so I may be wrong, but it doesn't look right to me :-)

You're absolutely right, I just double-checked and I completely missed that. It's gone now, haha. Thank you!

My helmet is huge, but being a bigger stormtrooper makes things even out, I'd say this looks slightly large cause it reminds me of the physique of the New Hope Elstree Troopers, ho tended to be skinnier
@TheFwoosh8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's also the slight skinniness throwing it off a bit.

WHY DIDN'T THEY ARTICULATE THE FIGUART'S TROOPER LEGS LIKE THAT!?!?!
@nathannotnate15998 жыл бұрын
I'm not too sure if I should buy this as well since I was already planning on picking up the sh figuarts Stormtrooper. I'm conflicted cuz this mold looked really good 😖 Edit: $85?!?!?! Bwahhhahahahahhahahahh... no I'll go back to my LEGOs
@TheFwoosh8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's a little expensive for a piece that essentially double the size of the regular models I'd hold off and wait for them to hit other places.
@nathannotnate15998 жыл бұрын
The Fwoosh Also, do you by any chance have (or are planning on picking up) the SH Figuarts/model kit shoretrooper? I already bought the Figuarts online and am waiting for it to ship in, but I still need validation lol. I'm just wondering 🤔 Keep doing what you're doing!
@TheFwoosh8 жыл бұрын
Natedogg5413 I'm going to be building the Shoretrooper model sometime soon but I passed on the Figuarts. Just too many toys, haha.

I will call the helmet large, actually, I'd call it fucking huge. Please do a side by side comparison with the 6" Stormtrooper.
@TheFwoosh8 жыл бұрын
Either way it's going to be way fucking huge compared to a 6-inch trooper.
@SteveWeiserOnYouTube8 жыл бұрын
Are you a moron?
@TheFwoosh8 жыл бұрын
Not that I'm aware of. But self-awareness is a rare thing these days.
@SteveWeiserOnYouTube8 жыл бұрын
I know you're not, you know what I meant. Put the entire 6" next to the entire 12" so we can compare them like that. I built the 1/12 and it looks kinda normal, I wanna build the 1/6 but I think the head looks unusually large
@bjrnhalfhand22588 жыл бұрын
Gotta give them points for going 1/6 scale but that is a skinny ass trooper
@Sithfire30Creations8 жыл бұрын
Got two of these kits so far....may get another two. Crazy huh....and yea, the helmet isn't a factor. Anyway, hoping they may consider a Sandtrooper at this scale. :) Great review!
@TheFwoosh8 жыл бұрын
Oh man, yeah, a Sandtrooper would be awesome. Would push me to finally get around to some weathering on these kits.
@longlivetherebellion73798 жыл бұрын
the head is not over sized if you go look at some of the older star wars movies and take a good look and not just base your judgement on how model makes and figure makers have proportioned it
@TheFwoosh8 жыл бұрын
Oh, I know, I run with a 501st member who has OT Stormtrooper gear. It's not huge but the helmet is large and the body is skinny. The helmet isn't supposed to be wider than the torso.
