Why do you call it a water line. It's banding in agate, with some of it being non-precious opal. Read about geology and agates so you can learn the real terms of what you see. BTW, getting the host rock out of the agate like you want will make it less valuable, but you do you.
@DutchmansAgates2 күн бұрын
Water line agate is a term used within the hobby. Look it up. This is a hobby, I'm always learning. However, I'm not a geologist, nor am I pretending to be one. These agates don't have any value worth talking about, I'm also not in it to sell them either. So if removing host rock so it reveals more of the chalcedony/agate, why not.

Hello Dutchman, my husband & I are curious as to what you do with the treasures you find. In best regards, T&T from Tennessee.
@DutchmansAgates8 күн бұрын
Hey there Tish & hubby, currently I clean them, give them an acid bath if needed (citric acid and/or Iron Out), rub them in some mineral oil and then display them in glass jars infront of a window. Once I have a cabbing machine I'd like to face polish some of them, and tumble others. All a work in progress!
@garygrossmann271710 күн бұрын
Do you know what the white coating on a lot of agates is?
@DutchmansAgates10 күн бұрын
It's most likely opal, from what I read. It could also be opaque chalcedony, which makes sense to me.
@garygrossmann271710 күн бұрын
@@DutchmansAgates I wish I knew how to get it off. I have found many agates that would be so much cooler if they weren't partially covered by it.

@DutchmansAgatesАй бұрын
If you look at Damon Point on Google Maps, you generally walk the bottom of the Point, not the top, if that helps at all. The gravel "travels", sometimes it's in one spot sometimes another. I usually walk the whole length of it finding where it's at today. It's quite a walk, between 2-3 miles to the end. Hopefully you have better luck next time!

I always try to be careful and aware of where the tide's at. In that particular timestamp I'm not close to the ocean. I've always lived close to the ocean, pretty much anywhere in the Netherlands you're no more than 2 away from the coast. But you're right, I didn't grow up in a house with the beach right out the front door. How I wish.

I have a question, what do you do with all these finds? I have asked this question in other channels but know one seems to want to give me an answer. I really am curious about this.
@DutchmansAgates2 ай бұрын
Most people will tumble or cut them. Personally I just wash them, give them an acid bath if needed to remove river gunk, and then apply mineral oil to shine them up, and put them in glass jars to display them. I'd like to get a cab machine to polish up specific areas, possibly a vibratory tumbler which isn't as rough on the stone and keeps more natural features. I'd like to turn some into a necklace also. I hope that answers your question!

Nice finds my friend! My wife and I have been going to this spot for about 12 years now haha. It is our home away from home. Been seeing a lot of garbage left behind by people this year so I try and pick up what I can. Maybe one day we will run into each other!

Have you ever been to the Lewis River, or the Kalama river? We haven’t been to those yet, even though we are close. We usually go to bigger locations, like central Oregon and Washington. After seeing your videos, we need to start searching our local rivers more. We do have some carnelian we found on a river by the Salmon River. But we haven’t been back there for a while.
@DutchmansAgates3 ай бұрын
They're on the bucket list but I haven't been yet, I do know the Kalama river is a good spot to check out. I've tried going to the Salmon river but park rancher said better not to as most if not all is on Weyerhaeuser property and they will prosecute rockhounders (I even called and asked for permission). You'll do well in Southern Washington rivers, good luck and have fun!
